"Oh the games for the iphone pretty much really suck due to large amount of shovelware."
By that reasoning Metroid Prime 3 and Super Mario Galaxy are garbage because you have to search for them in the store amidst the Ninjabread Man and M&M racers of the world.
"While the price point may be premium, I feel it only adds to the feeling that PSP Go is the elite object PS3 was always supposed to be"
What?! What stupidity is this comment? Is this analogous to the stupid comments Sony used to fire at us "Like we should work extra hard to be able to afford a PS3" and crap? Are you really going there? Why don't you tell us about the historical battles and their giant turtles next.
Seriously I like your articles but when you're stretching that much to justify an overpriced handheld that you have to say the price makes it only for the elite... you're obviously an Apple fanboy or someone who loves their PSPgo and will find any reason to justify it. Wow. Just wow.
It's funny but Nintendo absolutely destroyed my interest in anything Suda 51 does. NMH I found to be a game with prospect but in the end a fairly uninteresting experience. I'll probably play it more when I buy a Wii again but after ten hours I was really disinterested.
Then I find out that he was working on Fatal Frame 4 which is then summarily not brought to the states even though all of the other games had been. So now and forever his name is attached to one of the most frustrating things I've ever heard since Fatal Frame is my favorite survival horror series. Now hearing Suda 51 is like hearing Uwe Boll mentioned. That's how bad it is.
Dead Space blows anything that RE5 has to offer right the hell out of the water. Its atsmosphere is much more immersive, the gameplay feels much tighter, the hordes of enemies make the ability to move and shoot not a luxury but a necessity and it's overall one of the best games I"ve played in recent memory.
However it's repetitive as hell and you spend a lot of time in samey looking areas, yes. But RE5 was just as repetitive even if the backgrounds changed. Plus Dead Space spared us any ridiculously stupid Gears of War inspired segments and replaced it with an annoying, but not quite as annoying, turret section.
That said I'm actually looking forward to Dante's Inferno more than GoW3. GoW3 looks fantastic but so does DI. GoW3 looks to play almost exactly like the previous game, simply on a bigger scale. But both of them have crazy presentation and huge battles going on... I'll tip my hat to DI. At least that game has a protagonist who'se main motivation isn't "His boundless rage" but something more, ya know, interesting.
Most definitely Final Fantasy VII. When that game came out I wasn't salivating at the store like everyone else. I simply wanted to play it. And when I finally did play it I felt that while the gameplay was good the storyline was utter nonsense and Cloud was wholly unlikable. This made it a little hard to get into but I still put in over 200 hours into it.
Nowadays though with the rise of whiney emo girly boys as main characters becoming prevalent in the Final Fantasy games I can't even look at FFVII without getting a bit ill. If you've played one preachy Final Fantasy with an unlikable main character you've played them all.
Ugh. The Sims Resource. I sear to the gods that site... Forget breaking the EULA for the Sims, which by its nature means it's illegal to sell stuff you make for a game like Elder Scrolls Mods, Sims Content, etc. What's really awesome about that site is that if you sign up, become part of the community and then piss off the owners they will share your private information with others and discuss how to make your online life as hellish as possible. Good times!
Neither ROB or any of the characters from Earthbound were completely redesigned. they were simply given graphical updates. Kid Icarus was toally redesigned and given a much more interesting look. It does make it seem more promising.
Although as far as DX3 goes I'd be very happy if it blended the RPG elements of the older games with Gears of War type combat. So long as the option for stealth and other playstyles is there I wouldn't complain a single whit. It's possible to have Gears type action along with a mild stealth system and RPG elements in a game.
Pretty good article although there's one point where you're startlingly wrong. In many situations you no longer want to melee Hunters before shooting them. Since their pounce knocks everyone away in a ridiculous radius your best bet is to shoot them from a distance instead of closing in again. When someone is pounced, or smokered, they're invulnerable to all friendly fire except explosives or fire. So shoot away BUT stop shooting once you've killed the Hunter or Smoker. This is especially true since Hunters have a great ability to actually hit you while they're being meleed.
So unless you can close in, hit the Hunter off the victim before he takes too much damage and then shoot the Hunter dead VERY fast shooting is actually a GOOD idea.
Frankly I've always thought the Gothic games were pretty horrendous. They've got a lot of promise but so little attention is paid to the combat that it's almost impossible to play. Heck Two Worlds felt like it had better combat simply by virtue that it didn't feel quite as easy to get trapped by a group of enemies. That and those titles are so insanely buggy that I can't imagine paying for any of them.
So the jesters were the ones that killed it for you? It wasn't the fact that the two teenage leads acted like such idiots that if they had died, instead of the bad guys, it would definitely have been worth cheering about?
I loathe the Wii as much as the next guy but all of these actually sound pretty good. I'm definitely buying Overlord 2 but the Wii and DS games sound pretty good.
Of course Super Smash Bros. is a mega hit, they just keep re-releasing the same game with more characters and tune it to be more family friendly. Nintendo knows how to milk an audience (see the "new" Pikmin game).
Yeah, this is definitely overpriced even if it was only 20 bucks. The game is horribly done. It makes bargain bin titles like the Cabelas series look like the next Gears of War.
Ya know, I've never been able to get into this game. Perhaps it's the whole "controlling a child hero" part that I've never been able to wrap my mind around. But I've never been able to play this one for very long without getting annoyed and shutting it off.
The original was a mostly good game hamstrung by its ending. That final boss rush was some real garbage right there and it could literally make you restart the whole game. This... well ever since I saw the updated Rygar I knew I was going to have nothing to do with it.
Yeah, this is starting to sound like Final Fantasy VII all over again. Heck it's what I'd imagine FF VII to look like if it were to be updated for the PS3. However it seems that the entire world is going to be very futuristic, not steam punk. This looks more like Final Sci-Fi than Final Fantasy.
For the most part I couldn't care less about this game... until hearing about the combat system. That actually sounds interesting although I have a feeling that the story is going to annoy me.
Alot.
And yes, I think 8 is wrong. It's likely that the health above the enemies is their health while the bars on the bottom right are likely your partys health.
@cwf: That's the only reason that Wii Play has sold so well and it annoys me. We should call it a Wii Remote with a free Wii Play rather than the other way around. That would be more accurate but then Nintendo couldn't tout successful video game sales figures on that title.
Also, as a long belated thought, if a site chooses to focus on just one genre, that's fine. But that doesn't mean that every single game that comes out in that woefully limited genre deserves high grades. The Nancy Drew games are HORRIBLE.
My teen cousin bought one and asked me to help and it was TERRIBLE. This from a fan of adventure games and point-and-click types. Also acting giddy as a schoolgirl over a game designed for young girls comes off as disingenuous anyways.
