Another great Towell review of a racing game. I played the shit out of Dirt 2 and I can't wait to dig into Dirt 3. Although it's not extensively covered here, the larger range of current and classic rally cars looks mighty appealing, as well as vehicle-specific challenges.

Haven't listened yet but HOOOOLY TITS for comments! There are so many!! Long live the DAR! Seriously, just picking up on what people have mentioned in the comments that I skimmed, as long as you guys keep publishing a podcast weekly (or more frequently) full of video games, nerd-dom and your wonderful, wonderful irreverence (CHRISTIANITY MAKES MY TUMMY HOIT!) you've got a faithful listener in me. I may not post in the forums anymore and I don't comment on as many articles as I should, but I'm visiting the site multiple times every day to keep up with you guys. I've been with TalkRadar since the very early days. I think I started listening in the single digits, but it's been long enough now that I don't properly remember. Keep it going.

GamesRadar's Trailer Trash Theatre - Episode 18: Mortal Kombat
While I love TTT, I still am incredibly put off by the audio of the couch sections. Voices are phasey and inconsistently placed well past the point of distraction. Lizzie, instead of being panned center is pulled to the right. Chris' voice floats around the left channel but occasionally will zigzag across the stereo image for seemingly no reason. What's the mic setup for those portions?

Yeah, the audio during the couch shots was really strange and distracting. Things being panned to incorrect places, for starters. Also, were you guys using multiple mics? Things sounded weird and phasey as well. Regardless, still enjoying the trailer commentary, especially on We Dare. Man, I cannot believe such a thing exists. The juxtaposition between prelude-to-orgy flirting and anything being done with a Wii Remote is just too great.

its probably good that fillion isn't in the movie anyway. with the way the story and the rest of the casting seem to be going its doubtful he could fix it with his greatness just by being in it, and i would hate to see him in something that sucks.

The Top 7... Overlooked games of 2010
@Joe: Thanks! Yeah, I work in a recording studio that primarily does VO, so I sorta get paid to notice things like that. :D Matching vocal qualities in different rooms with different mics and gear is a bitch. I figured that, since your forays into video have been few and far between so far, there really wasn't any dedicated, treated space in which to record. Good luck, and I look forward to seeing the next video, whatever it happens to be!

Man. This is what I hate about the internet. At least a third of these comments are just reactionary stupidity. The very first video gets posted and people fly off the fucking handle like the site is going fully video. Calm down, people. One video doesn't exactly make a precedent. I appreciate the attempt to branch out into other formats, and as a huge Tdard I look forward to hearing the editors more. Of course, their articles are written each in their own distinctive style, but speech is something entirely different. And for those of you who are complaining about the scripted, stilted delivery, let me remind you: FIRST ATTEMPT AT VIDEO TOP 7. That said, I do have criticisms. While I didn't notice the inconsistent audio levels between SFX and VO that some mentioned, I did (and have previously, with the Trailer Trash vids) been bothered by the inconsistent recording of the VO. It's very obvious that the audio for the camera shots and the game reel voiceovers were recorded in different ways, and the difference can be jarring. The camera shots tend to have short slap echo, from a room that's not sufficiently acoustically treated. Then the VO is so highly compressed that it sounds like the narrator is speaking 6 inches from your face. Anything that can be done to make the human-based audio more consistent would be great. Finally, I say keep it up. I thought this particular Top 7 was a great one to start with, since it was intended to expose people to the games they may have missed, and including game footage is the best way to do that. Try a video here and there, not just for the Top 7 but for other articles as well. I loved the old videos of the plastic instrument band, controller destruction, etc. More of that would be nothing but awesome. And now that the video player doesn't suck canal water, it's a joy to watch videos on the site. Thanks GamesRadar!

hmmm. the video version of this reminds me a lot of when your favorite, previously text based game characters are suddenly given a voice outside of your head. Your initial reaction is never that of 100% satisfaction, because that's simply impossible. after a while though, (if its not crappy) you don't have a problem with it, as its not necessarily bad, just different. the change is a bit jarring but being able to knock out an entire top 7 in less than 10 minutes is fantastic and i think it will also help get through the ones that aren't as appealing to specific readers as others. there have been more than a few top 7s where i simply did not get through it because it failed to hold my interest, but then of course always looked forward to the tdar discussion of it. i look forward to this method fixing that problem. i like it. keep up the fine work.

What is the best way to play a racing game - joypad or wheel?
I have been racing with the Logitech Driving Force GT for easily over a year now. (coupled together with the fine product at www.wheelstandpro.com) I spent all of my gt3 and gt4 days using the controller, and while it was quite sufficient once you get the hang of the tolerances, it wasn't until I got a hold of the DFGT that i realized exactly how much more these games had to offer. The ability to balance a car right on the edge, controlling understeer and oversteer simply with the twitch of the right foot, its peerless. The way the steering goes light when the back steps out or actually FEELING the side to side weight transfer, knowing you can't hit the brakes JUUUST yet or you'll spin because the weight isn't set -- the quick right left right of deep forest (gran turismo series) after the first hairpin is a perfect example of this -- is just something that you can never go back from after you've experienced it. The DFGT is a bit pricey (about 100$ or so on amazon) but its worth every bit of it. On top of the limitless detail of the feedback and input response there is the durability. This wheel of mine has seen a LOT of racing in its time at the hands of many different people. There are a couple of us who have a very relaxed (read: proper) approach to getting around a track but there are also a couple people i know who really enjoy the ol' chuck and stab method and will saw at that thing like its the hatch wheel to a boiler room door on the titanic. And not once, not one time has it ever given any indication of failure or miscalibration of any kind. I will say though, there are 2 very annoying design flaws on this particular wheel. The start/select buttons are in a RIDICULOUS spot that i will never understand and the plug that connects the pedals to the wheel isn't nearly as secure as it should be for how important it is. These do not deter from the overall experience though in any way, aside from a few instances of stabbing blindly at the wheel in a frustrated attempt to quickly restart a race. Like the article says, if you aren't serious about it, then save the funds because the controllers will certainly suffice. Be warned however, if you happen to get your hands on it, be it in some kind of demo or one of your friends has one, be prepared to be truly bugged, and you may never be able to go back.

Gran Turismo 5 (PS3): Gran Turismo 5 - Super Review
i have been blasting around in gt5 with my driving force GT wheel, (same as pictured but without the fantastic seat) since release and ya know... i agree with most of this. i've been shocked by some of the visuals, both positively and negatively, racing online with people in your friends list is great but the regular online racing seems unnecessarily confusing to jump into, and i have just HAD it with the bumpy pushy terrible AI. however, the highest percentage of the fun for me, and reason why i bought the game, is all in the driving. so much of my gran turismo time is spent on a track (usually deep forest) with a freshly built/purchased/tuned car, and hammering out the fastest lap possible with one or two friends in tow trying to beat what ive just set. its all about the driving, which is where GT5 still gets it right. I do wish that instead of 1000 cars it were more like 600 cars at premium level, and that tuning was back to its level of detail from gt4 (no brakes or aero adjustments?). I was really looking forward to your review, and i'm sad to see the outcome, but the more i read it the more i really got a feeling of "ya know..that's true." This all being said, I do still love it, i love the driving physics and (most of) the new graphics and the fact that the online exists. I feel gran turismo is still in there, you may not see it until you pull another tenth off that lap you thought couldn't possibly have more time in it, but even through all of the faff and missteps (of which there are many) that the game has taken, you put it best when you said "The real fun comes from taking the fast cars onto the proper race tracks and enjoying the impeccable simulation of grip and weight distribution you'd get in a real racing car, which is still good enough to pull it out of the increasingly big hole it's dug itself." Truth. even if it is unfortunately only just.
