59 levels to play before you die: A - D
Nice to see defender getting some love. That is one of my favorite games of all time. Like the Ninja Gaiden games after it, it has punishing difficulty, but it is so much fun you don't care that is kicking your butt.

Gaming words and phrases you never hear any more
At first glance, I thought the photo of the arcade was a screen-shot from a game like Fallout 3. Man, that arcade is in really bad shape. I am so glad, that I have several arcades in my area that are still in good shape. A couple of them I used to think were a little run down, but they are palatial compared to the one in that picture.

Mode 7 is the bomb! I have the few games that use it including Super Star Wars game shown in the picture, and it still looks really cool.

Stupid game terminology
Funny article. One I can think of is "space modulator" in the Looney Toons games that feature Marvin the Martian such as Daffy Ducks Space Missions (why they didn't call the game Duck Dodgers since that's who Daffy is playing is beyond me)for the SNES. A space modulator is just a ray gun that Marvin uses. It stays true to the cartoons in which Marvin calls it that, but its still silly.

Doom 3 (PC): Doom 3
It's pretty cool once you upgrade your weapons and get rid of the next to worthless pistol you start with. The starting pistol in the original Doom game did more damage than this thing. In Doom 3 you feel like you are shooting monsters with an actual starter pistol like the one they shoot off at track meets.

I got really tired of stumbling around in the dark in this game. The flashlight was nice but being able to attach it to your weapon would have been nicer. Isn't this game supposed to be in the future? We have gun mounted and helmet mounted flashlights for the military in the real world right now.

iD's newest version of Quake is actually much better.

Plants vs Zombies (PC): Plants vs Zombies
Maybe it's fun to play, but it looks stupid. Of course, I never really have liked "tower defense" games anyway. The only games I've liked with any "tower defense" in them were games like Stronghold where you got to build your own tower and a castle to go with it and then defend it if you played one of the modes where enemies came at your castle. The other versions of the same idea like this reviewed game are just weird.

QOTW: What's your biggest hobby aside from gaming?
I have a lot of interests, but I'd say my biggest hobby after gaming is sword dueling and archery. I'm a member of a medieval reinactment society called The Adrian Empire. We do competitive, non-coreographed duels and wars with real steel swords, axes, daggers, polearms and shields. The weapons are all blunted the way they really were for tournaments back in the middle ages. We wear real metal and leather armour and make our garb (clothes) as accurate as we can. We put on renniasance fairs, invitational tournaments and demos for the public, schools, etc. Some of our members have even been extras in movies like King Arthur, Braveheart and Kingdom of Heaven.

Dueling is fun and is our most well-known competition, but I enjoy archery with long bows even more because I'm much better at it than I am at hand to hand combat. I also do leather crafting, woodworking and bardic (singing and acting) in our group.

I've met more people and made more friends since joining the empire than in just about any other thing I've done.

Totally '80s box art!
The guy in the Trantor box cover doesn't look anything like a Stormtrooper (neither Nazi nor Star Wars).

Totally '80s box art!
I was born in '73, so I remember the 80's quite well. These box art pics are great. Brings back a lot of memories. About the only 80's fads I ever got really into were the neon sunglasses and the digital watches with the neon wrist bands and rubber faceplate protectors. I also had a jean jacket, but never cut the sleeves off.

That MagMax box does look like some of the stuff I used to draw when I was a kid :) Robots with lightsabers and metal dragons---you betcha!

Sure, we laugh at the 80's fashions and fads now, but just think what our kids and grandkids will think of some of today's looks. I mean, having your pants pulled down until they are almost ready to fall off? Shoes with wheels in the heels? Ball caps with flat, wide bills and the logo repeated all over them? There's some pretty weird stuff that's popular these days too.
