The Top 7... Power-ups you DON'T want to collect
The first thing I thought of when I saw the article's title was the invisibility potion from Wizards & Warriors on NES. I suppose the Bomberman skull is the same thing when it triggers the invisibility effect, but it made your character invisible only to you! All the enemies could home in on you just as easily as any other time, and that stupid shimmer effect did not make it easy to be jumping the various narrow ledges trying to run away from the buggering things!

A rotting pile of gaming's cutest undead
EXTREME indignation for the most glaring of omissions! How, in the name of Tim Schafer, could the most thoroughly adorable undead character in this universe, and every other universe like it, not have been given so much as an honorable mention when she should have been given the top billing for this whole article?!?! I am referring to, and this explains my Tim Schafer reference, to Lupe, the coat-check girl/skeleton in Grim Fandango! She has a zest for life that the actual living don't have and her voice, provided courtesy of a Terri Ivens as I am informed by IMDB, is the kind of slightly raspy that one can get from yelling YAY!! at every slight nuance of her post-mortem existence, particularly when bossman Manny gives her a chance to describe her patented coat-check system! Cuter than: try to picture a prim and proper butler taking your coat when arriving for the box social.

Happy Holidays from the people who make your games
Don't know how one of the principal themes from It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia made it in the Activision card, but it sounds like a Christmas muzak thing anyway so that's probably ok.

Six videogame plot twists you totally saw coming
Also, No One Lives Forever has the familar element of action spy fiction of a traitor in the organiztion for which we work. The traitor? The one that we wanted it to be. The jerk who kept on giving the main charcter such a hard time no matter how well she does.

This one's easier than easy. Starcraft 2's Tychus is secretly working for Arcturus Mengsk whose goal is revealed during the endgame cinematic. But we knew it all along if we watched the opening cinematic so it could only count as a plot twist if we were somehow supposed to have forgotten that introduction.

The Top 7... Births in video games
Remember Black & White? You would have 2 people, obviously of opposing genders, that you would pair as Breeder Disciples. They would stand in place kissing, fully-clothed, and moments later, a fully-clothed, walking, talking, ready-for-school kid would appear between them and then the 3 of them walk away in seperate directions attending to whatever business they thought appropriate.

Why Xbox Live Arcade needs a revival of REAL arcade games
Sometimes, it's difficult to understand what it was about arcades that made for such pure, uncompromised awesome play. It seems that a lot of my best parlour memories are rose-tinted at best. When I see XBLA translations, or worse, Game Room(also on XBLA) translations of my old favorites, no matter how faithfully emulated they may be, there is definitely not that old magic anymore. Certain games on there are ones that I have not seen in a long time and playing them now is simply not even close to how cool they used to be in a decent pizza parlour or Aladdin's Castle. If one can never go home again, I suppose one can never go back to Family Fun Center again either.

The best RTS units of all time
I agree with RazielArcanum. Total Annihilation needs a shout out. How about its super-long-range missile vehicle on the Core (I think) side? The Diplomat! One of the best names ever since it did have a way of ending disputes! Also, Sacrifice had some ingenious ones. Remember the Abomination for Charnel's army? Threw rancid chunks of its own innards a long way and they bled on everything while flying? Sick!

How to kill gaming's hardest heroes
Prince of Persia: Design rooms with more symmetry and don't offer so many obvious grooved handholds on one wall when all the other walls are smooth. Don't put so many beams in close proximity to said handholds since they don't really support a roof or any other edifice anyway. If you're going to break a ladder in half, move one part someplace far away from the other so that a clever triangle jump isn't enough to get you to the top where only more improbable beams/grooved handholds can be exploited.

Franchises that were better off dead
Remarkable that there was no mention of Wing Commander in this, since that was the first thing I thought of from seeing the title of the article. Wing Commander used to be one of the main reasons that '90's PC gamers wanted to upgrade their rigs. Each game, as it was released, practically set the new benchmark for what graphics and audio hardware could do. The franchise seemed to have died off with Prophecy, which was one of the best reasons to invest in a new 3d acceleration graphics card. It was supposed to be the start of a new trilogy with a new enemy threat, but not too long afterward, the studio decided to concentrate on MMO's only, which were Ultima Online and its many expansions. The failed reboot was Wing Commander Arena on Xbox Live which was just an uninspired flying fragfest with familar fighter deigns to choose when playing and the occasional recognizable capital ship in the background. Not the treatment that the series deserves for the impact it had with its earlier releases.

First!

Yes, I agree entirely. Certainly, no one can accurately say that my place is the pristine model of meticulously organized housekeeping. Nor can it be said that I am immune to addictive games' siren songs. I went hungry back in the days of the original X-COM just so I can squeeze out more research projects. But no one ever has depended on me for healthy living and I was, and still am a bachelor (no surprise there) whose slovenly living space is not really able to cause offense given how seldom it is seen by anyone other than maintenance staff for the apartment complex. Once that changes, a fella has to whip oneself into shape and fast. 6 months is entirely too short for someone like that.
