Back in blighty I have a few modded consoles. Believe it or not an overclocked Megadrive and my Biohazard Dreamcast with a laser cut insert in the lid, oh happy days have gone.

I remember windowing my first PC and adding lights, cutting edge back in the day!!

Submarines smell bad as well.

Which game doesn't have a fault? I actually have a sneaking theory that great gameplay and great narrative/story while not being totally incompatible are actually opposed. What makes a great story would often be fairly shite to play.

If you think about great fiction or great films, they are not often exciting. Exciting films are usually pretty limp on story. I think this is because the excitement is based on unreality. How many soldiers have such an unrelenting exciting time? The SAS might have 10 minutes extreme action and 3 months training. So to keep the action going the narrative is a conglomerate of multiple persons stories, which is an extremely hard technique.

Just accept that the moments playing the game are just ace and be happy

You are all talking shite

The last great console was the Vectrex

PS3, ok I suppose for simple point and click adventures, not really a true gamers machine

360, Excellent for keeping coffee warm and having a nice red glow in your living room

Wii...Huh what is it good for? Absolutely nothing... Say it again

PC, I'll just say Myst shall I?

Vectrex, proper analogue control, dedicated screen, pin sharp graphics, no jaggies, real 3D goggles and even has a small footprint on your desk.

So good I've got 2

You forgot the best!

Fanboy baiting. Not just fanboy on fanboy arguments but deliberate and calculated wind ups.

I have passed many an fine hour logging on to forums and managed to remove the control rods from a FB, leading to explosion. True baiting involves comments that are just enough to sow a seed of anger without being inflammatory. The rest is like FB fishing, reel them in watch them explode.

Ah the memories

QOTW: What is your all-time favorite console?
Probably the Atari 2600. Not because it was great or the games were unbelievable but because every time you plugged a cart in at the time you were playing games at the cutting edge.

You youngsters have grown up from birth with video games and you'll never know the unadulterated awe the first time you played Tank against your brother on the TV.

Seriously you didn't judge it on its graphics, gameplay or sound. You judged it on the fact that there was nothing in the world like it.

For a true games console my favourite all time has to be Dreamcast. A console ahead of its time but let down by gamers.

Boss fights out of context! You fight your way through hordes of bad guys, all with reasonable levels of ability. Suddenly boss dude. 100 times tougher, oh and you have to shoot his belt buckle on tuesdays! Is it just me or does it just seem stupid. I think this is why CoD is so good. The boss battles becomes an epic battle so it is in context, and doesn't grate.

I have always wanted the final battle to be won with a single bullet!

Why BioShock 2 is a TERRIBLE IDEA
I'm with you on this. Even though SS2 was a sequel of sorts it was really its own game. The game was awesome. You experienced it. A sequel would have been SS light really. In SS2 everything felt new and original and that made it great, a sequel would have been a poor copy.

I feel the same way about BioShock. A sequel in 10 years might be ok but a sequel now would be poor.

I am sure it will be a great game, but am not sure it will be a great BioShock game.

For me only Half Life had the gonads to make a better sequel, but in that case the story needed more to be complete.

Have to say tho stylistically the franchise has legs!

QOTW: What's your biggest hobby aside from gaming?
Mine is like a grown up video game. I drive!!

Not just getting from 1 place to another but right proper hooligan off road driving.

When I moved to Peru I bought a 1966 convertible 5 litre V8 Mustang as my toy, but the police kept stopping me for bribes (seriously) so decided to keep play time off road.

I have just restored a 1960 swb land rover to original (the best one in Peru!!!) which I use for going into the mountains and general rugged naughtiness.

For the sand I have a Baja Bug. Was going to full tubular/sand rail but had a chance at a sand spec fibreglass tub for a good price.

The weird thing is how playing games has effected my driving. If you don't know proper off road driving is very technical and actually quite slow. For very steep or really uneven ground you might be moving at walking pace from rock to rock. Very precise driving. I used to drive like this when I played mainly FPS on my pc back in the UK.

Since going console I play many more driving games. Now all discipline goes out of the window. Big hill? Fast as possible, forget the brakes, straight line..... Trouble is this way is normally followed by reverse down slowly, trying to miss the big rock that hit your differential at 50mph!

In my buggy I just have to drift. Again the proper way to drive is rolling over the sand, very steady and smooth... now wheels spin, sideways and a tow out!

Have to say though.. the game way is more exciting, if less effective.

Have to get me a motorbike next!

GTA... with you there matey.

I just don't get it, I've tried and tried and tried really.

I live in Lima, Peru and to me GTA just feels like a daily commute except my car handles well. It is just too realistic, but with unrealistic handling cars. I even had a real 66 mustang convertible and that handled better than most of the cars in these games.

Drive, drive, drive shoot drive... aargh

The original 2d was the bolloxs tho'

COD4 is amazing but I see your point. The original COD had lots of really epic battles, while COD has lots of epic skirmishes.

Halo 3... again I can see why it is amazing for a console, but I was really a PC gamer for many years and it always felt a but watered down, even Halo itself.

Sims... F**K me I emigrated to change my life, why oh why do you want to live a virtual life.
It beats me but I can understand Sim City because I will never design a city but virtually doing stuff I do anyway, wtf. I like to bump uglies with real girls I am afraid, not try and patch a pixel snatch.

The Sega/Nintendo fanboy stuff also rings true. Super Mario World didn't float my boat at all but the original Sonic just killed my sleep.

Grand Turdismo is the also horrific. Take away the shiny bits and you have an average at best racer.

I like this sort of article, hit the spot again. Lots of intelligent discussion and a turbo nuke flame war possible!! Like it

I suppose most console bods have only played part 2 (Good but not great). Do yourself a favour, find the original, fire up your PC and experience one of the greatest games ever. RPG, FPS, Conspiracy theories, ED209 clones, lazer swords, bio mods, hacking, booby traps, sniper rifle, sunglasses, great locations..... bestest. Graphics look a bit dated but runs on any PC. Up there with System Shock 2. Learning curve steep but just survive the first level and you will be hooked.

If you are really L33T (hehe) try playing with no fatalities except the few essentials.
