Hexar commented on: 10 game ads that are horribly up their own ass |
|
| I would echo the sentiments of farsided and waynski1457 (Red Dwarf rules) Who cares if they are pretentious, sentimental, or "stupid solemn"? It seems this article has missed the point of advertising. Showing gameplay over and over and saying buy our game just doesn't cut it. The better job they do creating something to get you interested in the product, the better job their department has done. I don't think I laughed once at any of the how it should be advertised, and think that in almost all of the cases the real adverts were some of the better ones we have seen. Must be a slow week at GR. |

| Great stuff, I enjoyed the humor. Though I wish you would have put some of them into context a little better. Like in The Old Army Game, Donald doesn't "sense that he's done for" but wishes for death after he believes he's lost his lower half (of course were he not a cartoon he would have died shortly thereafter anyway). | |

Hexar commented on: The Beatles: Rock Band (Xbox 360): The Beatles: Rock Band |

| I approve of this review. For the record I'm a mild cave dweller. I've yet to play a rock band game (always been a guitar hero fan myself) and I have never EVER liked the Beatles music. That being said I have a sister who goes ape shit for their music and loves rock band, so on her dime, and my 360 I believe I'll enter this club fairly soon. Hopefully I won't want to tear my ears off in the end. |

| I played and own most of those games. With the exception of Gex, I really didn't find many of them that awful. Sure Bubsy was a rip off and the sound was terrible and repeated a lot, but it was like every other game then, run right and jump on stuff. It didn't deviate enough from the formula to make you gag. Boogerman was a little weird yeah even as a snot nosed kid I wasn't into it. But Rocky Rodent ruled, he put on hairspray and used that as a weapon! Mohawks ftw. |

Hexar commented on: The Top 7... games that need prequels |
|
| @ The_Lurcher Reading is pretty hard isn't it. Heaven forbid I would have the option to read 3000 characters (remember it's optional, and those with basic reading skills may want to move along as this was an adult comment). "If you didn't think the Gamesradar team where right about what they believed where good ideas that is fine that's your opinion but please keep it to yourself or at least give an example of what you would like to see rather than complaining and nit-picking." Yeah first off I didn't say they "where" wrong about any ideas they "believed" in. You obviously didn't read my post, so for you, since reading comprehension seems to be a bit of a stretch, I'll summarize. I've yet to play a game that had a story great enough to warrant a huge desire for me to learn more about the game. Most are average at best, and I'm fine with that. The cited examples didn't scream to me must know more and if they did make a sequel I wouldn't be surprised that they would put up a backstory of similar caliber as their first entry(ies) so I won't hold my breath for a literary masterpiece. Lastly I gotta ask, do you really think anyone at Gamesradar is upset that I wrote 3000 characters (remember they aren't words, that is absolutely nothing in terms of length) expressing my opinion. Just because mine isn't in total agreement (or some asinine crap like zOmG first) I can't post a comment just like everyone else? |

Hexar commented on: The Top 7... games that need prequels |
|
| @ MassEffectfan Yeah we have those they were called Fallout 1 and Fallout 2. You don't see the bombs drop, but they're closer to when it all began and you do learn about the mutants, in much better detail than Fallout 3 ever did. It sounds like you're one of those guys that got in on the franchise with the last one (which is the poorest one) and then think that's what the series is about or where it even began. Stupid plot, limited choices and Oblivion with guns set in a very survivable post apocalyptic world. Do yourself a favor and check out the best games in the series, back when it wasn't about conforming ideas to an old one trick pony of a developer. As far as the article is concerned I would be hard pressed to find many games that I was absolutely dying to know more about their backstory because quite honestly most of them are just crap. Sure we had a great time playing through COD4's single player, but not because the story was so compelling or that Cpt. Price was such an interesting character. He's a fucking caricature of a military man for crying out loud! Watch any film and play many games and you'll get the same personality! What made that game work was that you were doing more than just the simply get the bombs, blow up the bunker gameplay. Level design and varying objectives, NOT Cpt. Price were the focus of that game. The same holds mostly true for Gears of War. I wasn't going into that game thinking it was going to have some great epic story. It didn't and thankfully I wasn't let down because of it. Monsters, aliens, others, whatever you shoot them, you win. Great graphics, bang on cover system, excellent co-operative play made Gears work (not to mention the multiplayer but we're really just focused on the single player experiences in this article). Not a generic invasion story. But there will always be those who think these are for whatever reason great stories to be had in generic video games. I know plenty of friends that go absolutely ape shit over Halo. Halo novels, Halo t-shirts, Halo toilet paper, all just so they can get that much closer to what was already a crap story. To each his own I suppose. The truth is that if they put forth as much effort with the story in the first entry (or subsequent sequels if they so exist) as they would with the prequel, we'd be let down once more by something that just didn't deliver on fleshing out the already lackluster stories. Mirror's Edge was such crap that I have no desire to know anything more about her, I don't care about her sister, I don't want to know why she runs away from everyone. Imagine what they'd come up with as the backstory. And don't even get me started on what those Japanese would think would be a good sequel. Their stories are already nonsensical enough as it is. What magic bullshit way do you want them to tell you why Disney and Final Fantasy came together? How about the truth? The title for this entry? Ca-Ching Hearts: Cash in Extreme Ultimate Super Number 1 GO-GO. |

Hexar commented on: The best TI-83 RPGs ever |
|
| It's been six years since I was in high school and back then we didn't spend much time with our calculators playing games. I had a few friends that Phoenix fiends and instead of doing calculus they'd play that. Eventually I passed and the AP test and they didn't. However in junior high it was all the rage, since we didn't need the damn things. Although few (if any) had the 83, most had an 85 and if you were cool you had an 86. I once bought a used 92 but it was fairly promptly stolen (I believe it had a big ass pokemon sticker on the case, but that didn't seem to deter the theft). Still that was a great article sure does bring back some good memories. |

| I guess this is the whole Week of the Geek thing at work eh? Never read a comic book in my life and I doubt I ever will. Something about following a grown man in tights and or latex across numerous issues never sat right with me. But to each his own I suppose. | |

Hexar commented on: PSP (PSP): Exclusive PSP Go review from T3 |

| So skip to 1:45 to actually hear her brief OH SO brief review of one part of the system, the rest of course is just a run down of the tech spec's which hardly count as a review. I didn't hear one word about whether it's worth it or not. Whether the fourth edition of this system was merited and yet they call this a review (for the record I have a PSP-1000 and use it for holding down papers). | |

Hexar commented on: The greatest game on every platform |

| "...rudimentary player chat, and yes, monthly subscriber fees." Hmm, no? I played the original PSO on Dreamcast for months, and as a poor kid with no credit card at the time and parents that would be damned if they would pay for any video games, I can easily attest that there was no monthly fee associated with PSO. No perhaps if you connected with SegaNet there was, but that would have been an associated cost of connecting to an ISP, something that all of had to pay for (I had a local dial up ISP at the time that I just connected to with the Dreamcast). The following versions ushered in monthly fees, but when the game first began I didn't pay one red cent to Sega after purchasing the title. I wonder how they let that one slip by... |

Hexar commented on: Halo 3: ODST (Xbox 360): Halo ODST: Hands-on with the new killer co-op mode |
|
| Can't say it looks impressive. I really fail to see how it combines all of the elements of those other games other than the larger objectives that they all happen to share. But moving between points in L4D and saving buddies is a far cry from a game where you're not going to be pounced and need an actual hand from another player. It's players all shooting at monsters that come in an endless swarm. If this is the best that ODST then I'll gladly be leaving this one behind with all of the other shallow games this company produces. | |

Hexar commented on: Dawn of Discovery (PC): Dawn of Discovery |
|
| Fairly weak review, you went on mostly about how you got confused in the game and couldn't figure out how the economy works in the game. The reason connecting the hemp plantation and the weaver's hut directly doesn't work is because it goes through the intermediary of the warehouse. A worker leaves the warehouse and travels to the plantation to get the hemp which he then returns to the warehouse. A worker from the weaver's hut then goes to the marketplace to requisition the goods to begin making the clothing. Pretty much like in real life. I don't show up at the farm and ask for my milk. It's a shame that you got confused (which as another commenter had mentioned wouldn't have happened had you listened to the in game advisor) but taking up most of what is loosely termed a review here is a disservice to what game there is. Trade and exploration are some of the important elements in the game, and yet you don't even mention the former and barely touch on the latter. Love it or hate it, it doesn't matter to me, but for heaven's sake man at least make your opinion known for reasons other than I couldn't figure it out. I would certainly hope this wasn't the first you were confused in a game and I can't help but wonder did you put down those games as well? |

| I'm with afroninjakatana here I saw quite a few copies of The Guy Game when it first came out and it remained there, I never heard any ban on it and the damn thing didn't go away. And mind you I lived in Utah at the time. So it may have become banned the US, but it certainly wasn't at first and the article leads you to believe otherwise.. | |
