Ugh. *cringes with embarrasment* This definitely puts a new spin on gaming's giants.
1. Microsoft. Microsoft did just about everything right, from the level of coolness to the confident attitude. Also, their "Buy a Wii, too!" ads were genius. What better way to take down a mutual enemy (the PS3) than with the help of another enemy? It was brilliant.
2. Sony. Sony made themselves look like an ass in the end. They got WAY too complacent for their own good. It might have helped them to check gaming's history books. Just because your console wins the generation, doesn't mean your next console is guaranteed FTW. Making everyone seem like a servant was dumb, egotistical, and quite stupid in the long run. I do plan on buying a PS3, but Sony's blatant disregard for their consumers ("We want people work extra hours just so they can afford a PS3") puts me off.
3. Nintendo. Oh, Nintendo, Nintendo... Whatever shall we do with you? First they failed in the 90s with their dinosaur of a president's heated remark that "No Final Fantasy game will ever appear on a Nintendo console!!!" and then they do. In great numbers. Then, there was the family-friendly environment of the late 90s and early 00s. That was kinda stupid... I mean, I'm not glorifying peer pressure or anything, but if everyone else in the industry is allowing blood and guts and generally revelling in your inability to do so, that signifies that it's time for change. 2004 was promising, but again, Reggie's poor, misplaced zeal led them to where they are now... the console of choice for grandmas around the world. I'm tired of Nintendo and their lack of hardcore games. The PS2 had hundreds of good titles. The Xbox had hundreds of good titles. The Gamecube had about 75 good titles. The PS3 has about 15 good titles, but has lots more coming. The 360's every other game is critically acclaimed. But the Wii? We poor Wii owners have a grand total of 10 good games:
1. Zelda Twilight Princess 2. Mario Galaxy 3. Metroid Prime 3 4. Mario Kart 5. Okami 6. Resident Evil 4 7. Zack and Wiki 8. Smash Bros 9. Animal Crossing 10. No More Heroes
Great, Nintendo. Nice going. You find yourself with a grand total of 10 NEW GAMES-- and here we'll soon be going into Wii's 3rd year. How many good titles did Gamecube have in it's first 2 1/2 years? How many good titles did anyone have in their first 2 1/2 years? More than Wii, that's for sure. Nintendo needs to get their act back together.
But... It's doubtful they will. Casual games print money, dontcha know?
You guys should do more, or like the others say, a weekly (or bimonthly) feature. Some suggestions:
Vampires (no explanation needed, save maybe for Brad Pitt's mullet in Interview with the Vampire...*shudder*) Books (Spell books, stuff from Castlevania) Guns (Anything in Halo/CoD4 VS real world) Swords (Buster Sword VS medieval junk) Science/Chemistry (creating mutants, etc) Sex (Mass Effect's alien sex) Water sports (Tidus's Blitzball vs Beachball) Spies (James Bond/etc)
Spore on iPhone would ROCK. Only problem is it would probably take up too much memory...
Another thing I wanted to add: APPLE, GIVE US FPS GAMES ON iPHONE!!! Seriously, think about it, CoD/Halo (unlikely cause it's owned by Microsoft) would be AMAZING!!!
Where the heck are Aurora Feint: The Beginning and Tris??? I noticed GR skipped the free games, and that's a real shame, because those two, especially Tris, and incredibly addicting. Oh well. So does this mean we'll have an iphone.gamesradar.com page soon?
Great article, GR! Ok, so here's what I think. You were spot-on with The Lord of the Rings, The Matrix, and Terminator. Notice that those all have several things in common:
1. They're all movies. 2. They're all trilogies. 3. They're all blockbusters. Now, what do those three things have in common with LEGO Star Wars, Batman, and Indiana Jones? They are all movies. They are all (not counting Batman, unless you count the numerous pointless sequels and spin-offs) trilogies. They are all blockbusters. They are the most likely to be made. You are dead-on about us needing a quality LEGO Matrix or Lord of the Rings. Terminator is something I would not have thought of, but more power to you. That's an excellent idea.
Lord of the Rings could be a huge, epic story with like 30 playable characters, including Elrond, Gollum, Saruman, Arwen, Galadriel, Eomer, Eowyn, even a freaking Balrog! I mean, how cool would THAT be? I'd preorder it the moment it'd be announced.
The Matrix is also an epic trilogy. I'm curious as to what Morpheus's Lego minifig would look like, *snicker snicker*. But seriously, Minifigs in trench coats with double machine guns, John-Woo style? Seriously, get real. NOT! That's exactly what Lego is about! Lego is about the ridiculous things that nobody thinks will work. The whole epic scope of all three movies, combined like LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Trilogy, would. be. AMAZING!!!
Terminator... THAT would be cool. I can just see Kyle and Sarah minifigs running down dark, barely-lit alleys, chased by a twice-as-big-as-normal Arnold Schwartzenegger minifig. LMAO. But cool, seriously. Also, the idea of Cameron as an unlockable character was great. I loved the TV show. Again, it should be bundled as one big game, not three different movies. Run it like this: Terminator-Terminator 2: Judgement Day-then from there, move on to two alternate endings. If you have, say, all secrets thus far, you move on to the good ending, the one that moves you on to T3, and eventually The Sarah Connor Chronicles. If you get like 50% or less in terms of secrets, you get the bad ending, in which you move on directly to T4: Salvation.
Finally, the Seventh Seal is VERY interesting sounding, but first I've never seen the movie and second, a LEGO chess game doesn't sound too good, to be honest. What WOULD be good is LEGO Monty Python and the Holy Grail, or LEGO Spider-Man or LEGO Dracula.
