Pokemon Black and White spotlight: the starters and their evolutions

Shares

Fire

Oh, Pokabu. What are we going to do with you? We had such hopes when we saw your first stage, but your final evolution is such a disappointment design-wise. On the plus side, Pokabu is the only dual-type starter this generation, but disappointingly it's the same old Fire/Fighting combination we've seen for the past two generations, making a total of three Fire/Fighting starters.

Pokabu's offensive strength is firmly on the side of physical attack, although his special attack stat is nothing to sneeze at either. For EV training, you could max out Emboar's already impressive attack stat, and then maybe try to make up for what he lacks in defense, both physical and special.

Above: Notice the empty Pokedex info - it's because nobody in the office picked Pokabu =(

The only thing about the grass-types that bothers me is if they are suposed to be snakes, why do the first 2 have feet?

This will be my first time choosing grass starter since bulbasaur. Fire have almost always been better since him.

They all look pretty good. Unlike most fans I actually love all the new pokemon. I think I will continue with my water type for starers this time. I will see if the new final water can beat my Fav stater final of Swampert!

This will be useful for decideing which one to pick when the game comes out here

I like the first and second evolutions for all of them, but what the hell happened to the final evolutions? They look nothing like they should, except for jaroda, and even he looks a little odd.

grass or water for me. I can't stand fire/fighting types. i miss the good old days where fire type starters were cool charizard...typhlosion...and even blaziken but infernape? stupid. and this new evolution is worse. so yeah...water or grass even though the grass starter is a ripoff of treeko...

@redrum people aren't pissed at Emboar just because he's fire/fighting, they're pissed because every fire starter since Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald has been Fire/Fighting. Also, am I worng, or is this releasing in the US after the 3DS is supposed to?

  • Kapuran - October 3, 2010 2:56 p.m.

Also; y'all got a serious spam problem lately. I think you need better site security. :/
  • Kapuran - October 3, 2010 2:54 p.m.

I've said everything I feel the need to say about the starters, so I won't say more on that topic, but I will say; that new evolution animation blew me away. Evolution just got 10x more exciting.

  • Phazon117 - October 3, 2010 1:21 p.m.

  • TizzleSniper - October 3, 2010 7:05 a.m.

wow, i hate all of the starters this time around. in the past ive almost always picked the Fire starters because they normally had good ATK/Speed. but, these new ones just screw with everything i normally do with my team. id pick the water one (it being the most awesome looking) but i almost always pick Vaporeon as my water type (hp/spa ev trained with leftovers) and that water starter has horrid health. id pick the grass but i hate grass types. and the fire starter (yawn, another fire fighting) looks retarded and has shit speed. seriously, i would probably ditch everyone of them for a team

@BishopOfHippo I played the import, and I have got to say, it's very different than the past Pokemon games. The battles didn't change a lot, but other than that, it was really different. And the 1st Gym battle was also very different. It actually changed depending on what Starter you picked. But seriously, Game Freak? The 1st Gym Leader was a WAITER!?

Fire/water? Honestly... Thats too far of a break from Pokemon tradition. The Emboar looks much more like a Rhyperior than anything els, he has the same body structure and arms. The comparison to Dratini and Salamance seem a bit out of place. This Gen actually looks pretty interesting when one takes a look at the other 160+ entries. There is a lot of variation to Black and White. (And the last Gen didnt suck BTW.) There truly was a huge amount of potential with Pokabu, I was hoping for a ground/fire, but they just stuck to a different version of the same thing. For that reason, Im going with Mijumaru. He is balanced, and doesnt have such a bad design. Plus he has a moustache! :{D
