PlayStation Move game review: Start the Party

Stop! Stop the party immediately, go home, and think about what you've done

Words: on September 7, 2010

Imagine that you have a bunch of annoying friends whom you’re too polite to get rid of in any overtly rude fashion. Imagine that you secretly want to be rid of them all once and for all, in one fell swoop. Imagine that you wish to achieve this goal subtly, by instead making them decide they don’t want to hang out with you. Suppose you want to do it in a way which leaves you still looking like a nice person.

If that contrived set of Machiavellian circumstances applies, then you should innocently invite them to a party. And you should start that party with Start the Party. You won’t need to air a antagonistic word all night, but I guarantee you’ll never hear from them again.

Above: THIS IS NOT WHY YOU BOUGHT YOUR PLAYSTATION 3

Conceive of, if you will, not an actual mini-game collection, but rather a parody of mini-game collections. Emphasise all the vacuous, dull arm-waving and inconsequential goals, and cut out all of the frantic fun and potential for drunken giggles. You’ll have something similar to this game.

Fancy flailing your arms to fan a little man with a parachute across the screen? Or how about flailing your arms to swat bugs? Or flailing your arms to pop balloons? Because these moribund activities really are the calibre of what you get within Start the Party’s meagre selection of brief distractions. Even as mini-games go, they’re desperately shallow and morbidly dull affairs, with minimal requirements for skill or effort.

Above: A father and son bond by beating the crap out of the effigy of an animal. And thus a serial killer is born

The inherent blandness of the game’s interactions is tempered a little by its cool augmented reality tricks. Like many an Eyetoy game before it (and this really is little more than that), Start the Party displays the player and his or her surroundings on the screen, draped with various cartoon overlays.

The sweet part though, is the way in which it replaces the Move controller in your hand with a real-time 3D model of a prop appropriate to the current mini-game. Manipulating these things and observing their uncanny believability as they move through 3D space is far more interesting than it should be, and a brilliant tech demo for Move’s accuracy and all-round cleverness.

A shame then, that marvelling at the cartoon tennis racquet pretending to be in your hand is immensely more enthralling than anything you’ll actually do with it in the game.

You'll love
  • Cool augmented reality tricks
  • Tight, responsive motion controls
  • Did we mention the augmented reality tricks?
You'll hate
  • Woefully shallow games
  • Truly obnoxious announcer voice-over
  • Barely any replay value

    For a bigger overview of Move in general, check out our Move vs. Kinect hands-on deathmatch preview at http://bit.ly/aY8DDo. As for everything else, we have more Move game reviews coming, so certainly don't let one game inform your opinion of the whole system.

    hey everyone, this is one game. they arent reviewing the whole move system. this type of game is expected because sony and microsoft are trying to tap into the casual market. PS move and kinect are capable of more than their launch games as are all consoles.

    @xerroz

    Unbiased? Not really.

    Uninformed? Definitely.

    You're basing your whole opinion on Move, on one shitty mini-game collection.

    The chance for other types of games than this on Kinect seems pretty low, though, Move looks like it'll be integrated into games we like anyway. I still have hope for Move overall, this is just the sort of crap they have to toss out to the non-gamers.

    i have this rule: if you see yourself on the screen when playing the game, there is a 99.99 % chance the game sucks ass

    @frmonth

    I didn't expect this game to be a revolution for motion controls and that it would score high, I just commented on what I thought.

    Is it better than Game Party or Carnival Games? Or is it only an imitation?
