Peter Craig writing Top Gun 2

Top Gun 2 is apparently moving forward, with Variety reporting that The Town screenwriter Peter Craig has been hired by Paramount to write a script for the high-flying sequel.

As yet, there has been no official confirmation that Tom Cruise will return, although it is widely anticipated that the star will make an appearance in some capacity, with original helmer Tony Scott also keen to resume directorial duties.

Cruise has previously expressed an interest in reprising his role as Maverick, with producer Jerry Bruckheimer also thought to be amenable to the idea.

“I hope we can figure this out to go do it again,” said Cruise. “If we can find a story that we all want to do, we all want to make a film that is in the same kind of tone as the other one and shoot it in the same way as we shot Top Gun . We’re working on it”

Craig is currently working on Bad Boys 3 for Sony, so will be no stranger to the kind of macho dialogue expected to complement the overblown action. As for what the film will be about, we don’t have much to go on, aside from an idea previously mentioned by Scott.

“These kids play war games in a trailer in Fallon, Nevada,” said Scott, “and if we ever went to war or were in the Middle East or the Far East or wherever it is, these guys can actually fly drones. They are unmanned aircraft. They operate them and then they party all night.”

A germ of an idea for Craig to work with then. Hopefully we’ll hear more from Cruise and Scott as the script begins to take shape over the coming months.
