Blizzard has introduced a "Pet Store" to its major World of Warcraft PC MMO franchise -- allowing users to purchase in-game pets for their characters.

The pets available in the store can't be earned through gameplay, and can only be obtained via microtransactions. Blizzard has offered users services like server changes for an additional fee, but the pets represent the first time in-game content is available for purchase in WoW.

Wow.com: Ensidia, now of Tarren Mill-EU, reported today that they have captured the world-first A Tribute to Immortality. Considered to be one of the most difficult, if not most difficult, raiding achievements currently in the game, A Tribute to Immortality requires a perfect run of heroic Trial of the Crusader-25 with no player deaths and all 50 attempts remaining. The reward for pulling this off is the Crusader's Black Warhorse (Alliance version here), but I wouldn't expect to see too many of these running around in the near future.

The most succesful online game to date has been censored on european servers, due to the possibility to do drunk hunting. At the moment, the brewfest takes place in azeroth and two of the brewfest quests can only be done while drunk. These quests, where mythical creatures are hunted aren't available in the european version, due to "regional game rating requirements".

Upper Deck has posted on their site that they have canceled the upcoming Darkmoon Faire event in France for the TCG. They've been having events all over the world of this kind, featuring tournaments, exhibitions, and interaction with the game's officials and designers (I checked out one such event when it was in Chicago last year). And while they had planned to hold a Faire in Paris in 2009, apparently it's not going to happen -- they say there was "complications" with the "venue," and the event has been shut down.

Blizzard Entertainment's Rob Pardo revealed the planned features for Battle.net 2.0, which will launch in 2010 with StarCraft II and be incorporated into World of WarCraft. The biggest change is the introduction of what Blizzard is calling "Real ID" that should eliminate "smurfing" accounts and ensure better matchmaking. Games will be tied to a specific account much like Steam or other digital distribution services. Battle.net 2.0 will be free, however.

Pardo believes that the new matchmaking system is more powerful than Microsoft's TrueSkill and when paired with Real ID, it should help players of all skill levels get into games that they have a chance to win. On this point, the ladder system has been improved to take player skill into account. After a player completes around 10 games, they will be placed into a skill tier. Within each skill tier, the player is matched up with 99 other players in 100 player divisions. The focus of the season is on competing with these 99 other players with tournaments taking place at the end of each season between division leaders.

These days, lots of fans are hoping for a new World of Warcraft expansion called "Cataclysm", causing a big hype around the internet.

This has come to some phishers attention.

Phishing sites around the net, are using the enormous hype to tempt WoW fans to visit their phishing sites, by offering fake Alpha or Beta invites to infect the computer with a keylogger or other unwanted programs.

So if you see this logo on a website or a email, offering keys or downloads, the website is absolutely NOT legit.

As reported yesterday, to celebrate WoW's 5 year anniversary, World of Warcraft's infamous brood mother Onyxia is being re-vamped with new 10 and 25 man raids and a new loot table that equals current content.

EU Community Manager Wryxian has just announced that the PTRs for patch 3.2.2 are now Live, and has released the patch notes which also contain some class changes including a nerf to Rogues.

World Of Warcraft's Chinese Relaunch Sees Government-Mandated Content Changes (News)

World of Warcraft in China has seen some six weeks of downtime as government regulators process their approval of the transition to operator NetEase. It's in the midst of a partial return in the form of a free to play closed beta.

But an online game-focused consumer site, MMOSite.com, has captured some screenshots that show that WoW in China may not be quite the same as it ever was.

An official content review from Chinese Government entity the General Administration of Press and Publication (GAPP) that concluded on July 22nd resulted in a number of changes to Blizzard's popular MMO to allow it to restart.

Activision Blizzard's World of Warcraft has been down for weeks in China, as the hugely popular MMORPG switches operators from The9 to NetEase -- though it has just relaunched to existing users in free, 'closed beta' form.

But Lazard Capital Markets analyst Colin Sebastian said in a Friday research note that the financial impact on Activision Blizzard from the downtime will be "modest," partly because Asia makes up just 6 percent of total worldwide World of Warcraft revenues, he estimated.

"While Asia accounts for roughly 50 percent of global users, we estimate the region contributes less than 10 percent of total WoW revenues, due to the licensing structure and timecard model," he wrote.

Around 200 million internet users in China play online games, or about 64 percent of total web users in the country, representing double-digit growth from a year ago, according to a new survey by the China Internet Network Information Center.

The figures measure internet usage in China as of June 30, 2009, and place online gaming as the sixth most-used application for the web, analysts at Stern Agee reported, citing the survey. Online game usage is up 16 percent year-on-year.

"This may explain why the average number of hours spent per internet user per week went up to 18 hours from 16.6 hours at year-end 2008", Stern Agee analysts said.

There are reports that therapists are trying a new tactic to reach people that they think are "addicted" to online games like World of Warcraft - they're joining the game themselves.

Dr Richard Graham, a consultant psychiatrist at the Tavistock Centre in London, told the Telegraph: "We will be launching this project by the end of the year. I think it's already clear that psychiatrists will have to stay within the parameters of the game. They certainly wouldn't be wandering around the game in white coats and would have to use the same characters available to other players".

It's not terribly clear what they're planning to do in the game. Message people who they see regularly online? Graham acknowledges this, sort-of: "While a psychiatrist may excel in what they do in the real world, they're probably not going to be very good at playing World of Warcraft. We may have to work at that if we are going to get through to those who play this game for hours at end".

According to NPD data provided to Gamasutra, Blizzard's World Of Warcraft has now sold a spectacular 8.6 million copies of the PC MMO and its various expansion packs at U.S. retail over its lifetime.

Following the revelation that The Sims 3 sold more than 800,000 copies in its first month at U.S. retail, Gamasutra followed up with NPD to find out how well WoW -- perhaps the only retail competitor to The Sims series over the past few years -- has fared.

According to the company, which rolled up multiple SKUs of the massively popular online game, since November 2004, when the original World Of Warcraft launched, Activision Blizzard has sold 8.6 million retail copies of the game and its expansion packs.
