PC News from N4G | World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King
PC - World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King - Bambi Shall Have His Revenge in WotLK Any World of WarCraft player worth his carbon knows that their game of choice is filled to the brim with pop culture references that stretch from Paris Hilton to Big Trouble in Little China. It would seem as though Blizzard is continuing that trend with this recent discovery from the Wrath of the Lich King beta.

Everyone's favorite orphaned anthropomorphic deer, Bambi, makes an appearance in the game, along with his buddies Flower, Thumper, and his mom (who is still alive at this point). Of course, the names were changed to protect the innocent, that being Blizzard's wallet, but it's obvious what the inspiration was.

So what happens if you decide to be a tad bit evil and recreate that murder scene of Bambi's mom? Apparently, Bambi does not like that very much and instead of just taking it lying down like he does in the movie, he decides to totally destroy you.

PC - World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King - Mythic: Activision Estimate That It Takes $1 Billion To Compete With 'World Of Warcraft' Is Overblown MTV Multiplayer's Tracey John writes:

"Mythic VP and lead "Warhammer Online" designer Mark Jacobs said it wouldn't take a billion dollars for a competing MMO to take on "World of Warcraft" - maybe only $100 million.

"When certain people throw out ridiculous numbers, you know they're throwing out ridiculous numbers because they want to scare off competition or they want to make themselves seem invincible and that sort of nonsense," he said, referring to a statement Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick made at an investor meeting earlier this year.

"Realistically, if you're going into this space for the first time, and you want to compete with 'WoW' and you want to compete with us - because we're going into that same space - you've got to make sure that you have at least 100 million dollars," he said.

When I sat down with Jacobs last week during a demo of the game, we talked about what makes an MMO successful. Having worked in the industry creating MUDs in the '80s, online games in the '90s, and Mythic's biggest hit "Dark Age of Camelot" in 2001, he had some advice for those wanting to make it in the MMO business.

So why is $100 million the magic number?"

PC - World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King - Blizzard: 'We don't have anything against consoles' Blizzard has told VideoGamer.com that mega MMO World of Warcraft won't come to the Xbox 360 or PS3 not because it has something against consoles, but because of a "square peg round hole thing".

Blizzard's J Allen Brack said: "World of Warcraft is designed as a PC game. It's designed to have a keyboard and a mouse. So the controls and the control scheme that you have are very PC centric. If you think about mapping those controls and all those different type of buttons that you have to a console without a keyboard for chatting, it's a very challenging proposition."

Lead game designer Tom Chilton added: "It's really not that we have anything against consoles," Chilton said. "I mean we love console games also. And I'm sure there will be a successful MMO sometime on a console. So it has nothing to do with that. It's just more like a square peg round hole thing for our game. It just wasn't designed with that in mind."

PC - World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King - Blizzard: WoW graphical reboot 'may never be necessary' Speaking to VideoGamer.com in an interview from Leipzig Games Convention last week, Wrath of the Lich King lead game designer Tom Chilton said that it may be possible that constant expansions "keep the game looking fresh" and that high tech has never been a priority for the developer.

When asked how many expansions Blizzard could make for WoW before a series reboot is needed, Chilton replied: "It may never be necessary. It may be possible that just through constant iteration we're able to keep the game looking fresh enough. I mean for us it's never been a priority to have the highest tech game on the market.

"For us usability is a lot more important. We want to make sure that our game runs very well on low system specs. We want to make sure that our engine supports our stylised look. So for us it's really more that kind of iterative improvement works a little bit better for us."
