World in Conflict is an immersive mother of a real-time strategy game, making players team up tactically to solve objectives in small skirmishes, eschewing micromanagement of all kinds. We managed to get Massive CEO Martin Walfisz to drop the bomb on the game. You can also check out our review of the PC version. The Xbox 360 version is set to come out in February. ...

First rule of extending the life of a game is multiplayer. The second is providing tools so players can create their own content.

If you'd like to head over to the Internode Games Network, you can download WicEd, a map editor for Massive's RTS World in Conflict. Seeing as WiC had multiplayer from the get go, this utility is for those who wish to follow up on that second rule.

The third quarter sales are up from last year's sales of 182 million euros ($265.6 million). For the first nine months, Vivendi has seen its total sales rise 50 percent over 2006 to 716 million euros ($1.04 billion).

Vivendi has chalked up the increase not only to its WoW subscriber base, but the release of its The Burning Crusade expansion, which saw release in China in the latter part of the third quarter.
The PC version is already sitting on the shelf in your local Woolworths, but it looks like Xbox 360 owners are going to have wait a bit longer for stellar RTS World in Conflict.

Originally slated for console release at the end of the year, World in Conflict's publisher Sierra now says we're going to have to wait until "some time" next year for the Xbox 360 version - disappointing news for console fans gushing over the console ...
Unless you've been hiding under a rock somewhere for the last six months, you'll know that World in Conflict is set in 1989 at the peak of the Cold War. The Soviets, on the brink of internal collapse, have invaded France (one can only presume for the wine and cheese). They then spread forth into other parts of Europe before eventually landing on US soil and bringing the fight to America. Well, that's the basic timeline, anyway - in actual fact, the missions start off with the ...
The flurry continues. We've already seen pants-wettingly good trailers of World in Conflict's background and a healthy dose of in-game action. Now we're been given a thorough tutorial in its cinematic majesty.

In fact, Conflict sees the Reds bastardising American soil with an aplomb we haven't seen since Command and Conquer: Red Alert back in 1996. If the trailer tells you one thing - other than that extra time spent on graphics was well worth the effort - is that this is no ...
World in Conflict looks nice. It's hopefully going to do for the modern-day RTS what Company of Heroes did for WWII-era RTS action - and this new vid shows off some of the game's impressive DirectX 10 features. Like clouds, smoke and light from God's fingertips.

We're serious. Fortunately, with words like volumetric being tossed around, there's a developer on hand to talk us through the deformation technology and other effects used in World of Conflict. Enjoy.

Wednesday 4 July 2007
This brand new movie for World in Conflict, the RTS set in an invasion-struck United States, might not tell us anything about how the game will feel to play - but it's an excellent bite of cinematic entertainment.

World in Conflict sees a modernish-day Russian army strike at the US in spectacular fashion, launching air-drops of troops and synchronised bombing runs on the beleaguered 'most powerful nation on Earth'. And this trailer does a grand job of setting up an ...
RTS World in Conflict on Xbox 360 is scheduled to release this autumn, and we're getting a first look at the console iteration in these six screenshots.

WiC on 360 is being developed by Sierra's internal studio Swordfish Studios in conjunction with Massive Entertainment (developer of the PC version), both ensuring the gameplay is optimized for the console's controller and also implementing a new heads-up-display that suits the platform.

The RTS features a fictional Cold War scenario penned by ...
World in Conflict is an RTS set in a Cold War scenario where the Berlin Wall never fell. That means we get loads of cool '80s and '90s tech to play with - and fully destructible environments to let loose in.

The first thing you'll notice when you get into a game is that it's big without being too sprawling. The camera swoops in from what looks like a mile above the conflict zone, down through fluffy clouds and into the action. The graphics did cut up a bit during our playtest, although ...
The PC version is expected in September with the 360 version following sometime after. No date has been given, but an official announcement is expected soon. World In Conflict looks to set itself apart from other RTS games, such as Command & Conquer 3, by doing away with resource management and a fixed camera. 1UP notes that the game also features Tears for Fears (we'll let you guess which song).
RTS developer Massive Entertainment reckons that a more action-orientated approach is the way forward for the genre on console, and that its World in Conflict pretty much fits the bill.

"The potential is definitely there, and technically there is no problem running a RTS game on the next-gen consoles," Massive President Martin Walfisz told us when asked whether he thinks PS3 and Xbox 360 can ever emulate the true PC RTS experience.

The difference between PC and console input devices is of ...
We reckon it's looking rather impressive, but you can check the shots our for yourself (hit the Images tab above) and see what you think.

World in Conflict is based on a Cold War scenario, but it's a fictional storyline set in the late 80s and the Soviet war machine has both advanced into Europe and launched a surprise ...
Fixed camera angles looking down on masses of units will go the way of the dinosaur if lead designer, Magnus Jansén has his way. "We want the world to wake up and realize that this is the way to play RTS games." says Jansén, when asked about World in Conflict's unique camera control system. Mousing to the sides of the screen will rotate the camera angle and you can zoom back and forth with the WASD keys, much like a first-person shooter.
Its been a while since we brought you a first look at Massive Entertainments World in Conflict. Their first game since Ground Control II, World in Conflict is set in the Cold War 80s. The Soviets, instead of going Perestroika, have invaded Europe and the US, leading to a three-fronted war where everyones got nukes. And everyone loves nukes.

We were told how the game was set to combine real-time strategy with the basic setup of a Counter-Strike match - starting players off in one corner of a ...
Despite the collapse of the Soviet Union and China's transition to a free market economy, the premise of fighting for freedom against the threat of hostile communist invasions continues to remain popular and is carried out to the extreme in Sierras latest real-time strategy World in Conflict.

Set in the late '80s, World in Conflict presents the following "what if" scenario: the Russians have launched an all-out invasion on our nation and it's up to you to lead U.S. forces in battle against ...
Some months back, we ran a preview of World in Conflict, noting that it looked like an interesting take on the real time strategy genre. Having gotten our hands on it last week, albeit somewhat briefly, we can say that our initial impressions were indeed correct: it's interesting.

Actually, the one thing about WiC that really made an impression can be summed up in one word - "nukular." Just to fill you in, multiplayer WiC is played much like an RTS version of Counter-Strike, in that players ...
Easily one of the most unique games on the show floor at E3, World in Conflict is a real-time strategy title that has a metric ton of pick-up-and-play potential. The modern-day setting is Cold War gone hot; the conflict between the USSR and the US comes to blows, with conventional and nuclear weapons causing the chaos.

While we won't be replacing games like Mario Kart or Halo on our party game rotation anytime soon, we really liked WiC 's point-and-click simplicity made for online teams of ...
Friday 12 May 2006
In between quite literally running around the E3 show floor like some sort of crazed report-o-bots, we've managed to have a quick play of Massive Entertainment's recently announced RTS World in Conflict, and can only conclude that it's a real-time strategy aimed at gamers who don't like real-time strategies. Which, you understand, isn't necessarily a bad thing.

There's no base building, no resource management and - in the multiplayer demo we got involved with, at least - it ...
You wouldnt think there would be too many new wrinkles left in Real-time Strategy games, but developer Massive (you may recall their Ground Control RTS series), may just have found one. The innovation certainly isnt in the setting, which seems to be loosely based on that neocon wankfest of a Patrick Swayze movie Red Dawn - it's 1989, and in the games alternate universe, instead of the previous decade having seen the collapse and Balkanization of the Soviet Union, the Reds have managed to pull ...
What if the Cold War never ended? What if the US and the Soviet Union were still in an apocalyptic showdown? We'll get to explore that possibility in the upcoming real-time strategy game World in Conflict. This is a world where the Berlin Wall never fell and thousands of Russian troops are now invading America.

The emphasis is on unrestrained combat, with no "resource gathering" like in other RTS titles - developer Massive Entertainment says it wants to "focus on the one thing people love ...
Wednesday 5 April 2006
