When the NPD Group released its non-PC US game sales figures for August earlier today, one of the month's highest-profile titles was missing in action. Neither the Xbox 360 nor the PlayStation 3 version of Wolfenstein cracked the top 10, despite the classic id shooter reboot being promoted by Activision--which was shut out of the top 10 entirely.

How poorly did Wolfenstein fare? According to NPD numbers obtained by GameSpot, the 360 version sold just over 59,000 units, with the PS3 edition barely clearing 30,000. Add in the PC iteration's 17,000 units, and Wolfenstein sold only around 106,000 units in the five days from its August 25 launch to August 29, when NPD's monthly reporting period ended.
They also give examples for the effort the developers made to improve the atmosphere of the game with many details.

Cinemablend Games writes:

"So this has been a fairly interesting week of news here at Blend Games. We learned that Rockstar is bringing back skydiving in the new GTA IV DLC, The Ballad of Gay Tony, which begs the question if airplanes will accompany the skydiving? There were talks from Bungie that Halo: Reach may not be the last Halo game they make simply because they love Halo so much, and Microsoft further cements the price-cuts for the Xbox 360 into the market place with the 120 GB and 60 GB models. These stories and more at the Blend Games Weekly Recap.

We also have some fresh new trailers up for viewing, including the new Shaun White: World Stage debut trailer, an awesome cinematic for Kingdom Under Fire 2 and the Dawn of War II: Last Stand trailer that will be sure to keep the fanboys rooting into next week."

UK based Endrant Studios had been co-developing Wolfenstein with Raven Software, and it was the first title by the team since forming in July 2008.
Actually, yes. Eventually. That is, unless they’re supernatural Nazis. Hence, we have Call of Duty: World at War’s zombie-fighting mode, as well as a little thing called Wolfenstein. Nazis are best consumed (via bullets) when they are presented as cartoonishly as possible, and what better way than to amp them up with Tesla-coil implants and crackling undeadifying energy? ...

All offered by the game's Lead Designer, Manveer Heir, over his Twitter account in the early hours of the morning on the 11th of August. There are a few catches that go along with this, but he swears he will pay for your copy if all the requirements are met.

"Huge gaming news was covered here at Blend Games for the official first week of August. Between August 2nd and August 8th we found out that a new demo for Section 8 was released, a sequel for The Conduit is very likely, Treyarch did the near-impossible by porting CoD: Modern Warfare over to the Nintendo Wii and a scuffle between Blend Games, N4G and Destructoid users occurred over the call for a ban on rape simulators (now being called "platinum" games).

Wolfenstein, like all good PC games, has been leaked onto the Internet for the freeloading enjoyment of dirty pirates. The Multiplayer portion of the game has been distributed online at the usual places, and Texas-based studio id is well aware of it. The developer has made it perfectly clear that evil publisher Activision is looking into the leakage, and there will stern retribution for those who dare cross them.

"I must warn anyone involved that Activision's legal department is taking this matter very seriously," states id community manager Pete Sokal. "Same applies here on the forums. If you mention that you have acquired this build, you are openly admitting to illegally obtaining the build and will be banned straight away. You have been warned.
First, Wolfenstein won't have a Linux version, because it is being developed by Raven Software (id only supervise) and published by Activision.

On future games with the idTech 5 engine (Rage and Doom 4), Carmack says: "There are no firm plans for linux ports of the idTech 5 titles, but it certainly isn't off the table. I don't think it will be very difficult to get them running on the binary nvidia drivers, but bringing them up to functionality and acceptable performance on other OpenGL drivers would probably be a more significant undertaking than we could afford."
The latest game to be hit by a summer delay will now ship a few weeks later, Activision confirmed today.

Why? According to an Activision spokesperson, the delay was made "in order to facilitate a simultaneous global release window for id Software's Wolfenstein."

Activision has therefore "realigned the game's release date for the week beginning August 17th." Kotaku is sure that goals were realized to some degree of synergy.

...It also lets you kill a lot of Nazis, which is always fun. Just how many Nazis you kill is tracked in the menus, right down to the different ways you've killed them (from electrocutions to dismemberments). MTV Multiplayer's Russ Frushtick asked to take a photo of the menu screen which tallied up the deaths, but since it was only from the one-level demo they were showing, the numbers were pretty paltry. Thankfully Activision just sent over a shot of the menu from 36% into the game, and here's what things were looking like.
I read a few blurbs on Internet Web sites, tried to get through a preview or two, and clicked a few random links on Wikipedia. Through my careful research and analysis, I found that the Wolfenstein franchise has never starred a wolf and neither will Raven Software's new title. What's up with that?
Speaking with me about the lack of a wolf protagonist in Wolfenstein, Sokol confirmed that players wouldn't be able to play as a wolf. "[There is nothing in Wolfenstein] about a wolf," Sokol said. "It dates back to 1992 where you gave Blazkowicz the Office of Secret Actions agent, who's just – he's the guy they send in when the chips are down and the Nazis are researching all this dark science. He's the only guy they can really trust to get the job done. So, you play a one man army, not a wolf, but a one man army."

The 22 images contained in the gallery don't display much in the way of gameplay, but they do give a good feel for the game's architecture and graphical capabilities -- assuming they are indeed from the upcoming game.
While publisher Activision refuses to comment on the images, they do appear genuine given what we've seen of the game so far.

Tom Bramwell reports:

''Id Software and Raven may be returning to Wolfenstein to blow up a legion of new Nazis on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC, but Adolf Hitler won't be among them.

That's according to id's lead artist Kevin Cloud, who laughed off the question at QuakeCon. "No, he's not in our game," he said with a smile. "We've got to save something for future Wolfensteins. We can't do him in yet!"

The new Wolfenstein first-person shooter, due out "when it's done", pits series hero BJ Blazkowicz against occult-hungry Nazis following the conclusion of 2001's PC title Return to Castle Wolfenstein.''
