Midway UK Purchased for 50p

PC - Wheelman - Midway UK Purchased for 50p

Following last month's closure of Midway Newcastle, the development team responsible for The Wheelman, it has today been revealed that the remainder of Midway's UK business has been purchased for approximately £0.50 (GBP). Midway's managing director for Europe, Martin Spiess, has negotiated the bargain deal, which sees him buy both the Midway Games France and UK offices for 1 Euro, around £0.86 at the time of writing.

UK videogame releases for March 23rd to 27th sees the release of the Midway/Ubisoft title, Wheelman and Playstation Network title, Burn Zombie Burn arrives mid-week. Don King's boxing title arrives on the Wii and DS along with Afro Samurai on Xbox 360 and PS3.

Wheelman creative director Simon Woodroffe has told VideoGamer.com that he thinks sandbox gaming elements such as bowling and dating in Grand Theft Auto IV are boring and not developed enough to warrant replaying.

"Yeah, there are elements of GTA in the game - and there are certainly elements of Burnout. I think our driving, the accessibility and the speed of it... that's more Burnout than GTA. But we've got an open world, a compelling story and a whole bunch of side missions - and those things are all GTA," Woodroffe told VideoGamer.com at a recent London press event. "We don't have a sandbox - you can't go bowling or go on a date. All that stuff is all well and good, but personally it doesn't appeal to me. It seems like a good idea but actually it's quite boring after a while, because in all of those mini-games, the micro-mechanics haven't been developed to a level where you'd want to play them over and over again."

Wheelman vehicle melee "guaranteed to get stolen" - Midway Newcastle exec prod tells VideoGamer focus testers "can't believe it's not in Burnout"

Shaun Himmerick, executive producer on upcoming open world driving game Wheelman, reckons the game's vehicle melee system is "guaranteed" to be copied in future games.

Vehicle melee in Wheelman, developed by Midway Newcastle in conjunction with Tigon Studios, Hollywood actor Vin Diesel's video game production company, involves darting your car in any direction with the right thumb stick in order to smash opposing cars off the road and send them spinning into the air.

Speaking to VideoGamer.com at Midway's recent Gamers' Day in Las Vegas, Himmerick revealed that developer Midway Newcastle's focus testers have said they can't believe vehicle melee isn't in Burnout.

"What I will guarantee will get copied by other people is the vehicle melee," he said. "When we have our focus testers in they literally say, "oh I can't believe Burnout doesn't have this!". It's so instinctive, driving then suddenly slam it left, bam! Take that car out, send it flying. I guarantee that's the one that will get stolen."
