Planning to visit the 41st century? Better bring a gun. Publisher THQ has released nine new screenshots and a trailer from its upcoming Warhammer: 40,000: Dark Millennium Online. Developed by Vigil Games, the next chapter in the franchise is set to transform the popular table-top game into a full-blown MMO, pitting gamers against each other in the Sargos Sector for supreme control of its lost worlds, online cred and, of course, tons of shiny, metallic loot.

As THQ managed a successful turnaround for its most recent fiscal year, the company is keeping a close eye on development costs going forward. In a Gamasutra-attended conference call after THQ's quarterly results, the publisher said that a relatively low initial investment in the upcoming Warhammer 40,000 MMO means that the game can reach breakeven more easily, as the low-cost Metro 2033 turned profit.

There's fighting talk today from THQ executive Jack Sorenson, who has told Eurogamer that he reckons Blizzard's all-conquering World of Warcraft has peaked. Speaking to Eurogamer at last week's Gamers Day bash in San Francisco, THQ's head of development was bullish about the prospects of the forthcoming Warhammer 40,000 MMO - the firm's first foray into the genre dominated by Blizzard's title, which currently has over 10 million subscribers.

PC Gamer magazine (UK) has scooped first real details on THQ's Warhammer 40,000 MMO, shedding light on the game which was unveiled in March '07. According to the info, the title's definitely an MMORPG as opposed to what could have been a Planetside-esque MMOFPS. But despite that it appears developer Vigil Games is aiming for a reasonably in-depth combat system, as it's orientated around cover, suppressive fire and flanking.

Until now, information on Dawn of War II has been limited for the most part to three measly screens and details on Warhammer 40K Online has been sparse.

Luckily, our friends down the hall at PC Gamer are getting ready to unleash a bombshell of details on everything Warhammer-related in their upcoming June issue and we can’t wait to read it.
