War Front: Turning Point - hands on

Style wins over historical accuracy in this promising real-time strategy

There is no shortage of World War II based games these days but developer, Digital Reality manages to bring something new to this stale setting as it sacrifices historical accuracy for style by injecting a bit of sci-fi technology and lots of fast-paced action into their latest real-time strategy, War Front: Turning Point.

Set in an alternate reality where the assassination of Hitler succeeded, War Front takes a look at what might have happened if the Allied, German and Soviet forces invested heavily in really cool looking weapons as the war raged on.

You'll be able to command the usual assortment tanks and machine gunning infantry units, but as you progress up the technology trees you'll also be able to construct giant mechs, armored zeppelins, and stylized tanks with too many turrets to count.

Resource management and the production time for building units is kept to minimum, which means that most of your time will be spent managing vast forces instead of your base's economy.

Planes and the ability to call down air strikes are nothing new in the world of real-time strategy games. But War Front manages to successfully incorporate air combat with action on the ground, adding a new dimension to the "my tank beats your infantry but your bazooka guy beats my tank" formula.
