PC - Unreal Tournament III - Unreal Tournament 3 infos from OXM: 3 to 4 dozen multiplayer maps Beyond Unreal cracked open the most recent issue of OXM and discovered that Unreal Tournament 3 will ship with a good 3-4 dozen multiplayer maps.

Aside from the gameplay shown in the video, it offered a few details about the game. It was said that the original idea was to make gigantic maps utilizing UE3's streaming technology for up to 64 players at once. They decided that it didn't feel like a UT game and went back to improving the original formula. Each map starts out as a basic BSP layout and is play tested until they think it is fun and then it is handed over to have static meshes and the rest of the artistic assets created. There will be 3 to 4 dozen multiplayer maps in the retail version of the game. The single player portion will have even more maps than multiplayer.

Epic Games' Tim Sweeney has revealed the studio is skeptical about Microsoft's Games for Windows Live due to the restrictions it places on developers - and PC gamers. Speaking in a 1UP.com podcast, Sweeney opined that the key problem with Games for Windows Live currently "is that any feature that Microsoft implements and charges for, the developer can't implement themselves." "As a PC developer, we're used to having complete freedom and defining our feature set - what we can give gamers and ... » Read More

PC - Unreal Tournament III - Can UT console mods ever work? Is the PC taking another bullet to the chest as a feature that was unique to the platform is now spreading to console?

Epic Games vice president Mark Rein dropped an interesting little bombshell the other day concerning Unreal Tournament 3 and modifications, game reworks - and often labours of love - developed by third-parties and bedroom coders that have kept PC titles alive for years after release.

In an interview with Team Xbox, the ever ebullient developer revealed that third-party UT modifications are not only now possible on console, but that Epic is going to take mods formerly only available on PC versions of Unreal Tournament "and bring them over to PlayStation 3, and help their developers polish them up."

Ultra-realistic tactical shooters may have taken center-stage in recent years, but Unreal Tournament 3 proves there's still demand for brutal, flag snatching deathmatch amongst PC gamers, and with Epic Games' strengthened investment in console versions - no doubt fuelled by a certain 360 shooter that recently found success - rocket-flinging frag fests may become king of the couch again as well. Last week we sat down with UT3 producer and all-round good guy Jeff Morris to chat-up the ... » Read More

PC - Unreal Tournament III - Epic Considering PC, Xbox 360 Interplay for UT3 In a lengthy interview with Game Informer, lead producer Jeff Morris was asked about the possibilities of having cross platform interplay between the Xbox 360 and PC version of Unreal Tournament 3, which was recently confirmed for Xbox 360 in addition to the PC and PlayStation 3.

At CES, Bill Gates talked about Shadowrun being able to play PC versus Xbox 360. Are you going to allow for that in UTIII?

Morris: "There's certainly no technical reasons why we couldn't do interplay between platforms, but the one thing with that is the input between the two. We're a fast-paced action game. With the mouse, you're looking here, and then you swing over here, and you stop and you swing up there and you stop. You've got all these quick movements, and I don't know that a 360 controller is ever going to have an analogy to that. If it's not fun or balanced to do it, we don't do it.

The Live network also makes it not a trivial task to make it integrate with the open network of the PC and the PS3. We're very interested to see how Shadowrun does it and if people will want that. As a consumer of games myself, with Battlestations: Midway I'll violate my rule, because I really love Battlestations: Midway. There's a great PC version and there's a great 360 version, but I want to play with the biggest number of players. I want the biggest server pool. I don't want to have to decide and artificially split my audience between the two. I'm going to go where the bigger audience is. With UT, I don't want to have the PC players to play with just half of the UT players just because of the platform. There's a real motivation to make it interchangeable with one big pool of servers out there that everybody can play in. If I can have a hundred servers with great ping to me by having all those servers shared, that's really compelling to me. Oftentimes, you'll see something like Battlefront 2, which is another game I love - there are much more players ...

PC - Unreal Tournament III - Epic considers Epic games hasn't ruled out exclusive patch content for the console versions of Unreal Tournament 3, producer Jeff Morris has revealed in an interview with CVG.

Morris told CVG that while UT3 will have the same content and likely be "the same sort of size" on PC and consoles, exclusive content could come in patches.

"While we want all of the versions to be the same that's not to say we won't do exclusive patches for each platform and that would enable us to do some pretty spectacular exclusive content," he said.

"We don't know the exact number of maps we'll ship with but we want it to be between 30 and 40 - that's substantially more than other games in the genre."

PC - Unreal Tournament III - Unreal Tournament 3 PS3 Release Date Confusion There's confusion over the release date of the recently-renamed Unreal Tournament 3 today, after Midway sent out a new fact sheet listing the PlayStation 3 version of the shooter down for release in 2008, with PC and Xbox 360 versions still penned for Q4 2007.

CVG has since contacted Midway who told them that as of now the release dates of all three UT3 versions are standing firm at Q4 2007, so it looks like the PS3 version might not be delayed after all.

When we interviewed them, Epic Games refused to commit to a 2007 launch date for the hotly anticipated UT3.
