PC - Unreal Tournament III - Mark Rein on UE3 and PS3 Mark Rein has responded to the recent rumors about UE3 on PS3 problems and UT3 running 60fps at GC in a forum post in which he states that, "Epic heard that same kind of silliness about UE3 on Xbox 360 before we shipped Gears of War and we all know how that turned out."

He continues to say that :

"The only way to silence the uninformed critics is to ship the games and let them play them for themselves. We're continually optimizing our engine on all supported platforms and we will continue to do so for several years into this generation. What we ship on PC and PS3 this fall will be considerably better than the builds we're showing here at Games Convention in every aspect."

Digital Extremes, long-time partner of Epic and developer of Unreal Championship and Dark Sector, has added to the crossfire aimed at Unreal Engine 3. In an interview with Australian site Gameplayer, Dark Sector director Steve Sinclair claims that the company opted out of using Epic's ever-popular engine so that it could hit its desired release date. "A lot of promises were made about the Unreal Engine 3, particularly on PS3," he said. "But as we see now, the time frames haven't been met and ... » Read More

PC - Unreal Tournament III - Unreal Tournament 3 cross-platform play STILL unconfirmed From PS3fanboy:

"Despite numerous sites taking the recent Gamespy press release to mean that Unreal Tournament 3 will include PC to PS3 cross platform play, this is still not necessarily the case. For those not in the know, Gamespy have recently partnered with Epic to offer all Unreal Engine 3 licensees the ability to connect to the Gamespy network and utilize its matchmaking and profile tools. This includes cross platform play between the PS3 and PC. While the partnership means that allowing cross-play would be easy, Mark Rein has stated to us that the decision to include it in Unreal Tournament 3 has yet to be made. As for other Unreal Engine 3 games, using these tools will be up to individual developers.

Mark was keen to emphasize that the Gamespy multiplayer tools are not a replacement for Games for Windows LIVE. It is simply another choice given to developers using the engine. We're sure that if anything changes regarding cross play for UT3 then an announcement will be made as appropriate. Until then, look forward to any and all Unreal Engine 3 games potentially having some excellent online play in the future."

"We look forward to extending that relationship with a number of new technologies customized for Unreal Engine 3 to be introduced over the next 12 months."

PC - Unreal Tournament III - Mark Rein Official Forum Response to Disk Sizes on PS3 & 360 Epic VP Mark Rein is feeling the true force of the fanboy and decided to post an official response to their statement about PS3 disks able to hold more data than that of the 360. His post begins as follows:

"I continue to be disappointed that folks on the internet treat any positive thing we say about one platform as some sort of critique of another platform. We're a multi-platform company folks please come to grips with that. We like the PC. We like the 360. We like the PS3. We like the Macintosh. We like Linux. We will deliver UT3 for all of these platforms and it will rock on every one.

The simple facts state that the optical disc on the PS3 holds more data than the optical disc on the 360. If we exceed size of the 360s optical disc then we'll have to find alternative ways to get the content to 360 users such as making it downloadable. Adding a second DVD to a game like UT3 would be a challenge because when playing online you might not know exactly what map you're going to be playing next and we have to be able to accommodate users of the core system. So does that mean the disc on the 360 might have a map or two less? Possibly although it is too early to tell for sure. People love Unreal Tournament because we always ship it with tons of great content but that also makes it a bit of a disc hog - in a good way

Obviously, and as is true with most major games on 360 and PS3, you're going to be putting your hard drive to good use if you want to experience the full richness of content that UT3 will have to offer over the lifetime of the game. the fact that you can do this is a good thing."

We were under the assumption that Epic had pulled the plug on any cross-platform plans for Unreal Tournament 3, however it turns out that it's still under consideration. Unreal Tournament III (or UT3 to its friends) is primed to be an absolute mind blower. We checked it out at last week's E3 and it's absolutely stacked with the sort of ideas that are going to help springboard it way over the heads of the competition. Amongst the highlights were our first look at the stealth-bender vehicle, which is cloaked when stationary; the Slow Volume deployable - a gelatinous blob that decelerates the velocity of projectiles (watching the flak cannon's fiery spit crawl ... » Read More

PC - Unreal Tournament III - Epic Talks Unreal Mods on PS3 Epic's Lead Producer Jeff Morris told Kotaku that the mods will be created on a PC and then "cooked" to work better on a PS3 using a built-in option. That file can than be slapped onto a Memory Stick and imported into the PS3 version of the game with the console's built-in MS reader.

He said the company is also looking at ways of making the mods downloadable through an in-game browser on the PS3 and perhaps even Home.

Here's some extremely promising new footage of Unreal Tournament 3, Epic Studios' deathmatch-focused shooter for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. And it's looking like a game that's capable of standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the best of the UT series. It stars gutsy explosions, crinkly lasers, flashy colors and, crucially, a phenomenal sense of speed with the smoothness to please those twitchy, headshot-hunting triggerfingers. Massive environments, dirty with detail, and lots of chunky vehicles ... » Read More
