Eurogamer writes: "Midway has decided GTA rival This is Vegas is better off in 2009, according to its latest financial statement.

The PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 game had been expected this autumn, but no reason was given for the delay. Perhaps the move was made to unclog what interim Midway boss Matt Booty called "possibly our strongest holiday line-up in recent years" in the money report."

As a de facto den of indulgence where long nights have been known to stretch into even longer days, Las Vegas doesn't necessarily encourage punctuality. With Midway Games seeking to recapture the total Vegas experience in its upcoming This is Vegas, it's not entirely surprising that the game won't be sticking to its originally announced release date.

A Midway representative confirmed for GameSpot today that This is Vegas has been delayed to 2009 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. However, it will be appearing in playable form at the E3 Media & Business Summit.

Midway's taking open-world gaming to a "superior level" (News)

Speaking to MCV following Midway's 2008 Gamers' Day in Las Vegas, International Executive Vice President Martin Spiess has blown the trumpet of the publisher's upcoming open-world game and big hope for 2008, This is Vegas.

"We have taken open-world gaming to the next level. All the things you want to do in a GTA kind of game but can't - like walking through a building and everything - you can actually do in This is Vegas. You can use the slot machine, go into a nightclub and do things you always wanted to do," said Spiess.

Just in case we were left in any doubt as to how spectacular a gaming experience Spiess hopes This is Vegas will be, he added: "You can experience something completely new. That's the superior level we've taken these open-world games to."

This is Vegas! focuses on 4 main game play pillars: Racing, Fighting, Gambling and Partying. But¿ really this is just a foundation. Last week Midway announced a new title, This is Vegas, set to release later this year. The open-world game looks to be a Grand Theft Auto knock-off with perhaps a bit of a satirical flair.

While perusing the press release, GamePolitics couldn't help wondering whether Midway execs had bowed to political and/or legal pressure over the game's title. GamePolitics readers may recall that in March of 2007 the site covered a dust-up between Las Vegas city officials and Midway over the phrase Only in Vegas.

Surfer Girl on Star Wars MMO, Boom Blox (News)

Surfer Girl says that the next year's Star Wars MMO, not being developed by BioWare or Sony Online Entertainment, will launch simultaneously for PC and consoles alongside the debut of the first Star Wars TV series in fall 2009, of which the storylines of the game will tie into.

According to her, LucasArts already have a second online title planned that has nothing to do with Star Wars.

Midway describes the game as a "lifestyle action experience, where players will live out their Vegas fantasies by fighting, gambling, driving and partying their way through the most decadent, fast-paced and wildest city in the world." Sounds like a meatier version of The Sims - "one we'd actually play".

"When a powerful businessman begins turning Vegas into a family-friendly tourist trap, you must start your own powerful empire and resurrect the famous adult playground," explains Midway.

There's an original game in the works up at Surreal's Seattle studio that's looking to put the sin back in Sin City. Prepare yourself for a different approach to the open-world game. This is Vegas takes the oft visited genre and fills it with everything Las Vegas is known for: gambling, parties, fast cars and scantily clad girls. All of that and you won't even have to take out a second mortgage on your house to foot the bill.
