The Sims 2 University

Rock and roll all ni-i-i-ght, and study every day

Ah, the college years - that magical space in between being a reckless teenager and having to face life as a responsible grown up. Given the new and improved sims’ life cycle Maxis added to The Sims 2 (letting sims start as toddlers, grow into maturity, and die), this little reprieve from the heavy burdens of adulthood was an obvious addition, and as the first Sims 2 expansion pack, Sims 2: University adds a huge amount of content, and well as a heck of a lot of fun and charm.

To begin with, University adds a new age category, Young Adult, that naturally enough kicks in after a sim ages from a Teen. Going to an institute of higher learning is actually a little too simple - there are no SATs or tuition to worry about - but once there you move into a dorm (with its attendant problems of community bathrooms and cafeteria food) and declare a major. From a gameplay standpoint, it’s actually an excellent way to earn skill points in a relatively short period of time, and if you knuckle under and play the good student you can enter the job market way ahead of the game - getting hired immediately at “intern” level in the Medical career, for example.

On the other hand, what kind of mutant goes to university just to study? If you want to, you can just as easily fart around and do nothing more constructive than play darts and hit on anything with legs. The odd thing is that sims don’t actually age while at university, so by deliberately failing every other semester you can extend their lives by a lot. Professional slacker student? No problem.
