The Settlers: Rise of an Empire

We hold a festival to celebrate our rise to Baroness

As it stands, the game’s main problem is that it’s not really doing anything ground-breaking - although how you’d re-invent the town-building genre is beyond us - and that you’re occasionally left with nothing much to do but click on your storeroom. The upside of idleness is that you’re not bogged down in micro-management, or hundreds of sliders.

The line we like best from the press blurb is this. It demands to know “is your division of labour, and supply of goods efficient enough to be able to defeat your opponent?” If that sentence has you thumping the table and bellowing “Yes, yes my labour network is bloody efficient, and I’ll manage you to the brink of madness,” then this is the game for you.

You'll love
  • Perfect difficulty curve
  • More calming than it is annoying
  • Classic gameplay, brought up to date
You'll hate
  • Brings nothing new to table
  • Could use a fast-forward button
  • Occasionally have nothing to do
