The Last Remnant

Yay, once again we get to have spiky hair and wield a big sword

The first things that’ll strike you about The Last Remnant, after its perplexingly long install process on Steam has completed, is that the menu system is a confusing mess. All the information is there, but navigating is a pain in the posterior. We even resorted to plugging in an Xbox 360 pad, which promptly failed to work. Finally we found all the options we wanted and there was an intriguing nugget hidden away in the clutter: you can play this JRPG in Japanese with English subtitles.

The plot of The Last Remnant runs thus: you play Rush Sykes, whose sister has been spirited off by some ne’er-do-wells, leaving only her magic talisman behind. Determined to rescue her, Rush embarks on a quest accompanied by various creatures and characters that range from normal to downright bonkers – it’s your basic Japanese RPG.

Sadly, the game never really manages to be anything other than average, even with the speed and graphical improvements made since the console version. Even though Remnant is powered by Epic’s Unreal Engine 3, it looks ropey. Now, we’re not saying that graphics mean that much, but when the gameplay can’t make up for a lack of flair in the visuals, you’re in trouble. The root cause of the problem is that the combat is just plain dull. It’s also both baffling and very simplistic at the same time.

Your forces are split into unions, made up of a small number of characters at a time. Each union can be given individual orders – attack, heal, back up allies and so on – and you can see the potential for some decent strategic gameplay. Sadly, the execution is confusing and sometimes, it seems, rather arbitrary. Often, you choose to attack and your men are the ones who take damage first. All sorts of things are going on and you are never sure whether it was you who made them happen or if they’d have just taken place anyway. Couple this with the fact you’ll be doing a hell of a lot of it and you’ve got a recipe for boredom.

Numerous other problems with The Last Remnant include unskippable cutscenes, confusing union creation systems, dreary locations, an auto save slot that doesn’t get used, awful music, no voices outside of cutscenes, to name but a few.

You'll hate
  • Graphics are straight poor
  • Dull combat
  • Shit music

This game actually made me drowsy on 360, I'm not surprised the PC version isn't much better

um actually the game is pretty good. I don't think the reviewer game it the time of day. for one; the cut scenes are 'skippable' with a quick pause, there's an option to skip. two; the game does 'autosave' its just turned off by default in the game options menu. three; actions in battle are determined by action points allocated to the enemies you are targeting. if a member has a powerful mystic attack such as 'caustic burn' and you attack with a AP lower then necessary you'll execute a lower end spell. four; I had no problem having the game recognize my wireless xbox cntrllr for the pc off the get go. five; the locations arn't all dreary. there are catacombs and cave just like any rpg, but there are also sprawling vista like dillmore and the great sand sea. most of the cities are amazing and truly show off the unreal engine, like eylusions towering academy and belurrus' prosperous desert trading hub . The game has a bit of a learning curve, but once understood you'll appreciate its epic experience and rewarding combat. I'm convinced the reviewer didn't give the game the time of day and feel rather frustrated that they made such a poor attempt at getting familiar with what some people will appreciate as a great rpg. if only a filler until the new final fantasy is released. I mean common "unskippable" cut scences? really? read the manual.

I've gotta agree with the above commenter. This review is just an embarrassment. I'm not saying the game doesn't have its problems, but they're certainly not the ones the reviewer commented on. It's still a good game for fans of JRPGs, especially considering the complete lack of great JRPGs on the PC. And it's significantly better than its 360 counterpart, in much the same way as the PC Mass Effect was.

Just for the record. Its not Gamesradar's review.
I am thinking of buying this tonight :)

How can the Xbox review be an 8 and the pc a 5? Other than the control difficulties which you had but two people have already said they didnt have that problem, plus how ever much u dont like the graphics they'll look better on any partially modern pc than on Xbox.

Im not saying uve messed up the review, im just saying gamesradar need to work out a proper system. I recon what u've done is what id do, give something distinctly avarage 5/10, but other people see 5/10 as bas and would give an avarage game 6 or 7/10... see where im coming from? Review wasnt long enough either... u cnt have played it that much.

What im trying to say is that the pc version cant be that much worse than the Xbox version, so how you can go from an 8 to a 5 is beyond me. A 7 or even a 6 if it had some big control problems i can understand but a 5? How can it be that much worse and personally i really doubt it is.
muffchild  - 7 months 18 days ago
? there's nothing wrong with the controls anyway. they're fine.

this review kinda sucks but the game really doese deserve a 5

heh, I registered just so I can comment on this review

the reviewer is clearly either extremely ignorant or just plain stupid. Comment from muffchild already pointed out a lot of mistakes from this reviewer, but I'll add a few more

first of all, union battles are boring and monotonous? did he only play the tutorial parts? sounds like the guy played with "automatic critical" and "turbo mode on", of course it's gonna be boring, it's designed for min/max players for grinding!

next, he can't even tell that mobility and the speed stat effects when units take turns? wow...

poor graphics? holy crap man, don't know what you've been playing your whole life, but this game looks incredibly beautiful. Great design, very crisp textures, nice effects (can't have max or my machine just stutters). Dreary locations? sounds like he only played gastlin caves and robellia castle, I mean, calapaleis? royotia? elysion? undelwelt? god damn beautiful

last of all, judging from his confused experience with the game, I'm pretty sure he can't grasp the simple concepts of "raidlock", "deadlock", "flank attack", etc, which the game clearly explains and you need to skip the tutorial or be rather stupid to not understand them

game is fine, not incredible but fine, reviewer is ignorant/stupid, sorry for long rant :D

Pretty fair review. The game's dreary as hell, and the graphics belong to a 10 yr old game.

I think the reviewer is probably basing his experiences on other PC RPGs he has played. So that is probably why it garnered such a low score. People have to remember that there used to be a much more variety of western RPGs on the PC and they varied in quality immensely while the Japanese style type RPG has not changed or keep paced with how things are done in the west. I can attest to this because i grew up laying many japanese RPGs and the formula for this game has not really changed much other than pretty graphics.

I just don't know who to trust anymore...
Lately I feel that with X-Play Adam and Morgan no longer even play the games, they are just figure heads. . and Gamesradar.... Lately many reviews that are just idiotic. I don't know anymore. .

x-play was never good

I am honestly appalled. I can tell that whoever wrote this review got basically nowhere. If they had, and maybe took a little time to get used to flow of the game, this review would have been 100 times more accurate.
First of all, the graphics are amazing. Wonderfully beautiful. If you have only gone into caves and such, you won't get the full experience. I remember cities, Remnants, people, routes, all took a little bit of breath away from me.
The combat is anything but dull. Once you have gotten some spells and arts, along with your own unique choice of characters to battle with, there is nothing boring about the fight system. It keeps you in tune by occasionally throwing Critical Triggers at you. Monsters and bosses can blow your mind with some of the attacks they throw at you. Strategizing, especially in a tight situation, can have you on the edge of your seat. Sure, some battles with lesser monsters are repetitive, but vital to strengthening your unions.
Also, the executions performed by unions are hardly confusing. "Deadlock", "Flank Attack", "Rear Assault", "Raidlock", "Interference" and "Interception" are extremely easy concepts to grasp if you pay attention and play a little longer than 10 minutes. My friend, who had been watching me play and hadn't even picked up the controller and played, EVER, understood most of these terms in less than an hour. He ended up helping me strategize throughout the entire game.
Cutscenes are skippable. But if being unskippable was, in any way, a bother? (Other than seeing it more than once before a boss battle and such.) Then no wonder you don't care for the game; the cutscenes are incredulous. Certain cutscenes can inspire strong emotiongs, such as courage or sadness or bliss. For example, the very ending left me speechless and I could never have fathomed a better finale.
Union creation ain't that difficult. Pick some people, how they're going to be set up, strategize their abilities a bit and you're done. You COULD sit there for hours doing calculations, but that is where YOU transform The Last Remnant into a boring science rather than an enjoyable experience.
However, I believe that what is possibly most off about this review is the music. I bought the entire soundtrack without a second thought. It is truly enchanting. Don't DARE call it "shit music" without careful consideration.
I think I have made my point.

ShannanigansTM, I'm not even sure you have a PC. The Last Remnant falls far behind the best and most recent PC RPGs.
ShannanigansTM  - 7 months 1 day ago
I'm not trying to compare anything, nor insult any other RPGs. My main point is that The Last Remnant is not exactly recognized to its fullest potential. May I inquire as to how far you have gotten into this game personally? Like I said, though, I'm not aiming to insult.

I put 25-30 hours into the game, as it was something I was reviewing for a local newspaper.

If you don't have a PC then you really shouldn't be commenting here. Thanks, Shan, buddy.

Well its only got a 66 on metacritic but most of the reviews seem to be put out that its too Japanese, and certainly not that the graphics and combat are poor, no mention of the music either in the short but admittedly slightly concerning list of faults.

Still, there is a demo and although i havent tried it yet I anticipate this game is probably a bit better than this review makes it seem, so I'll let you know what I think... just seems crazy that it goes from a 8 on x-box, to a 5 on pc, even though alot of people (elsewhere) have said that the pc version is far less buggy, and when u have a x-box control plugged in far, far better than the x-box version in terms of basic performance.

Dude, ease up on the hater-aid... You have to take in account that there are a few people that like these type of games. I came from an old school of gaming before ADD and ADHD was invented. Playing RPGs for days with my special one handed controller so the hand was free to draw maps and take notes. "J"RPG should be more about following and engaging with the story rather than fumbling threw countless battles, hence the genre is to play the role of the main charter in the story. If you but a game solely for the battles and action, every game would then be a RPG. He mentioned very little about the story, characters, and ability to affect the story or not. While it seems that he forgot "basic JRPG" have molded the industry he leaches his livelihood from (Final Fantasy, Dragon Worrier, Phantasy Star). I'll take the crappiest story line from a JRPG over some of the best state side(or UK)... excluding FALLOUT of course. The reviewer sounds like a Brit; bitter for no reason, and with a low tolerance for anything outside of his little island. While this my not be the best Game of the genre, it's far from a 5. I'd only played the Demo, but given what I've seen it's at least a solid 7.5 maybe an 8. Good enough to shell out the $$ for the game. Still if you ever hunger for a true RPG not an action RPG you have to order it strait from JAPAN.

"The reviewer sounds like a Brit; bitter for no reason, and with a low tolerance for anything outside of his little island."

As a Brit myself I resent that... how very, very dare u suggest your island is "little". :P ;)

Actually u made a mistake on the ADD, which is just attention deficit disorder, meaning that they're lazy and get distracted easily, which makes rpgs brilliant for us, cuz we can get distracted by all the pretty things and then check the quest log to remember what it was we were doing before the flower distracted us... and for that matter the game box cuz i cant remember what im playing nymore -_-
as u can tell by the slip into first person i am myself officialy ADD positive, so i should know.

Still, thanks for confirming that in RPG terms this game isnt actually bad or even badly avarage, cant wait to try the demo and see what its all about (well try and get a feel for it atleast).
