The Golden Compass

The first game in the His Dark Materials saga kicks up some Dust

With all the success of the Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter films spilling over onto our consoles it’s hardly a surprise that we’re about to be up to our comically large sleeves in anything remotely wizardly. But you won’t hear fantasy fans complaining, as the much beloved, million-selling His Dark Materials series kicks off this winter with the release of The Golden Compass in theaters and every console known to man or beast. An important distinction to make; since animals play a part that’s every bit as substantial to this story as we who walk upright.

Every person is endowed with transmogrifying animal counterpart called Daemons. They can communicate to their attached human, and to other Daemons, but more importantly, they act as a physical manifestation of the person's soul. These shape-shifting creatures exude their fears and desires, taking on the forms of various animals, such as leopards and villainous creatures of flight. While they can't attack humans outright, they can come to the defense of their owners. Think of it as spiritual warfare meets Pokemon. And we're told that our heroine Lyra and her Deamon, Pan (or Pantalaimon, for you HDM rabids) will be playable characters, even controllable simultaneously, on her quest to unlock the secrets of "the Gobblers" and the plague of disappearing children.
