BioShock and Oblivion are two of the most innovative first person games released this generation, combined winning some odd 80+ Game of the Year awards. So when a press release went out earlier today revealing a software bundle containing the two, a lot of people's interests were piqued. However, the bundle will not be making it's way to the PS3. Curious, PS3Center contacted Bethesda to find out why.

Gamer Limit doesn't just report on Bethesda's latest claim, they take a look into the amount of money they have made off of their DLC, and also comment on why gamers are disappointed with Horse Armor.

Just in case you never played Oblivion, here's a little backstory. Bethesda announced that they were releasing content that could be used in the Xbox 360 version of Oblivion, and gamers were immediately excited over the prospect of their favorite game getting new areas. However, while Bethesda did release a few new areas, they also sold another add-on: Horse Armor. What does horse armor do? Nothing. It makes your horse look cool. Many gamers bought the armor thinking that it would actually do something, then were thwarted by Xbox Live's "no refund policy".

Speaking to VideoGamer.com at a recent roundtable interview in London, Bethesda Softworks vice president Pete Hines has confidently declared that Fallout 3 is a better game than the highly praised The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

Asked directly if he felt the review scores for Fallout 3 will beat those of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Hines wasn't to be drawn on Fallout 3's review scores, but did express his confidence in the game.

"I don't have any doubts that on the whole, and I think this is a belief universally shared on the team that Fallout is a better game," said Hines. "But we're also not oblivious to the fact that we have a lot of extra baggage that we're carrying, being the guys picking up this franchise, that are re-imagining this series from 10 years ago, and there's something that comes along with that. We're very well aware of what we're up against."

He added: "I have no doubts in my mind that, at its core and for everything that it provides that Fallout is a better game than Oblivion was. For sure."

Fallout 3 is more than just a sequel to one of the most beloved PC RPG series ever - it's also a spiritual successor to The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, probably the single most ginormous game of the current console generation. Created by Bethesda, the same developer behind that sprawling fantasy epic, Fallout 3 has some pretty huge shoes to fill - but judging by what we've seen so far, it took one look, scoffed and is currently at work on an ...

Several news outlets, from Spong to G4 have been reporting that Bethesda has confirmed that the MMO project currently being undertaken by Bethesda Softwork's new development house, ZeniMax Online, is indeed an Elder Scrolls MMO.

However, Bethesda's Peter Hines has yet to formally confirm that the project is set in the Elder Scrolls universe. All he confirmed was that ZeniMax Online exists, and that Bethesda has poured $300 Million into its first project.

So, however likely it would seem when you consider the circumstances (such as Interplay owning the Fallout MMO rights, and the recent purchasing of elderscrollsonline.com), it IS of note to remind everyone that there has yet to be an official confirmation regarding any Elder Scrolls MMO.
There's more chatter over a possible Elder Scrolls MMO this morning, as crafty internet dwellers have discovered Bethesda's registration of elderscrollsonline.com.

The website is currently a dead end and Bethesda's Pete Hines says it's just nabbing URLs to prevent squatters getting there first.

Supporting the speculation is Bethesda parent ZeniMax's recent commitment to MMO development. Last week the company said it will be using funds from Providence Equity Partners for "future ...
You heard it here first - Bethesda will release a brand new add-on for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion next week called the Fighter's Stronghold. Actually, you did hear it here first, when we interviewed head PR honcho Pete Hines in February this year.

But enough blowing our trumpet (parp!). The new and exciting news is that Bethesda will offer Xbox 360 and PC gamers the add-on for nothing! Zilch, nada, zero. So long as you download it quick, that is. Pete Hines has revealed that ...

On top of all that is the obvious joy of owning an enormous fantasy property, with sprawling dining halls, wine cellars, barracks, training rooms, even an ancient Dwemer Forge that increases your Armorer skill - much like the Alchemy table in Frostcrag Spire. Beat that, Grand Designs.

Bethesda Softworks sent over a note announced they will release their last downloadable content extra for 2006's fantasy RPG The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. The download, titled Fighter's Stronghold, will launch on Oct. 15 for both the PC and Xbox 360 versions and for the first week will be free to download.

On the Bethsoft blog site, PR head Pete Hines talks about the possible way they will bring the downloadable content to the PS3 version:

"Since we're talking about DLC, I thought I'd update you with what's going on with the PS3 version of Oblivion. We are close, very close to working something out to bring Shivering Isles to PS3 owners. That may be in downloadable form via PSN, or as a standalone retail disc, or both. I can't say definitively yet that it will happen, and I definitely can't say when. But it's looking good, and hopefully we'll have good news soon."

It has been over seven months since Firing Squad last took a look at Windows Vista performance versus Windows XP. In that series of articles, Firing Squad found that both AMD and NVIDIA's Vista performance was lacking in comparison to Windows XP, although NVIDIA's showing in Vista was much worse: Vista performance was in some cases substantially slower than Windows XP, features were missing, and SLI was unsupported entirely. Meanwhile, AMD's biggest problem was the OpenGL portion of their Vista driver, OpenGL-based games like Quake 4 scaled poorly in performance in comparison to WinXP and Firing Squad encountered numerous visual artifacts. CrossFire support was also limited.

As you can imagine, in the span of the past seven months quite a bit has changed on the Vista driver front and Firing Squad received quite a few emails asking to revisit the topic.
Oblivion impressed us with its epic, free-form gameplay and gorgeous fantasy world. Fans were treated to another 30 hours or so of new adventuring when Shivering Isles arrived, while Knights of the Nine ...
Some hefty words of bravoda right there, but it looks like they are backing up there words so-far according to Heiko who got some hand on time with the PC version. Not only did he witness green hills, dense forests, swampland, picture-beautiful beaches, white glaciers, detailed vegetation with high draw distance, detailed animations using Motion Capturing and impressive weather and night and day cycles.
Bethesda has already issued a beta patch to start solving the issue. Because it's a beta, however, the studio warns of casual users hopping straight in, as there could be unforeseen issues that occur upon installation.

The answer is no, not really, Pete explained his opinion that they couldn't do an Elder Scrolls MMO "unless it was with some fresh idea that no one has ever tried before." This isn't an unqualified "no," though. "Certainly, there's a chance, it's something we've talked about, but it's not anywhere in our immediate future." The key is to come up with that "something new" that will work in an MMO environment, and as it stands with Oblivion on the one hand, and World of Warcraft on the other, it just won't work.
And next gen gaming got a big kick in the pants - thanks to a year of lonely rule by the Xbox 360. PC gaming fought fire with nukes, waging its battle against the console-based onslaught. In short, it ruled.

How do we handle this? We're handing out our gleaming Platinum Chalice to those games and systems which gave us the business. No boring list of 37 different strategy games, divided ...
Tuesday 12 September 2006
The existence of a new expansion pack for huge, free-roaming role-player The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion was leaked earlier today, as an online retailer posted release details for the add-on.

Knights of the White Stallion will be released in the US on 21 November for $20 (about £10), according to retailer GameStop's preorder details, although the relevant page has now been removed from the site.

The Knights of the White Stallion are a chivalric order in ...
The doors to the Vile Lair will open Thursday, adding-on a new homestead to the role-playing marathon, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

Your new refuge will be a multilevel underwater sanctuary, where you can satisfy your thirst for blood in its "cattle pen", or cure your dark gift at the Shrine of Sithis. Alchemists and assassins will delight at ...
Thursday 13 July 2006
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion developer Bethesda is today releasing a new PC and Xbox 360 plug-in for its hugely successful RPG called The Vile Lair.

The new content is actually a "multi-level lair for murderous players to find refuge". In this underwater hideout players can hire minions, lay low for a bit or feed, if they happen to suffer from vampirism.

Other features include the Shrine of Sithis were players can get healed and an indoor garden of venomous plants ...
Tuesday 27 June 2006
A clued-up computing student has created a modification for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion that enables two-player jaunts into the gigantic world of Cyrodiil. Unbelievable? Just head over to the mod's official site and you can download a video showing it in action.

Right now, the mod is very basic. You and a friend can wander around together, with the other player represented by a non-player character (like the folk you see wandering around the cities). Eventually the ...
For some people, vacations are a time to relax. Not us. When we check out of reality and go on an extended holiday in the fantasy land of Cyrodiil, we want action and lots of it. We want to find new and interesting ways to practically kill ourselves that no sane mortal would dare attempt.

The beauty of Oblivion is that if you can see it, you can generally go there, somehow, even if it involves incredible risk and searing pain. It's that spirit that drives our daredevil guide to The Elder ...
Wednesday 5 March 2006
Bethesda, creator of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, has launched a special download site for PC owners of the massively single-player RPG to purchase extras for the game. Along with the horse armour add-on that appeared yesterday, two new quests will soon be available, all priced at $1.99 (about £1.14) - please note that this is the final, confirmed PC price, rather than the $1.50 we reported yesterday.

Fortunately, the upcoming downloads look a little more ...
Bethesda has released a downloadable add-on for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, which adds barding - that's horse armour - to the game. Xbox 360 owners can purchase the download for 200 Microsoft points (or £1.50) from Xbox Live, but PC users will have trot over to Bethesda's official site, and shell out $1.50 (about 85p) for their upgrade.

It's great to see the game is being supported, but £1.50 sounds a bit steep for a few bits of horse-bound metal. Still, you don't have to buy ...
