Before each level in The Club you choose a character from a beat-‘em-up style menu, each with their own personalities and skills. The two we saw were a toothpick-chewing New York cop who’s infiltrating the Club to bring it down from the inside, and a Russian immigrant with two dead ferrets hanging from his back pocket. For some reason. Besides their personality and look, the difference between them was questionable, but we’re told they handle weapons differently.
And while we appreciate the new approach, we’re still not entirely convinced by The Club. The visuals are technically fantastic but lack flair, and we can’t see the bite-sized gameplay holding our interest for any great length of time. Until we play the complete package, rather than a couple of unrelated levels, we’ll remain cautiously optimistic. The developers are a talented bunch, having made Project Gotham Racing on Xbox and Fur Fighters on PS2. It’s a good idea, no doubt. The key will be in the execution.
