"While checking the message boards of one of my favorite comic artists, Mike Oeming, I came across a post simply entitled "Saxton HALE from Valve :)" wherein I found a link to the TF2Maps forums. I'm not entirely sure I can adequately describe the awesomeness contained therein, so I'm going to let the pictures speak for themselves. Beware, what lies beneath is not for the faint of heart, or those of you with weak constitutions. Only the manliest of men should venture forth."

Quietly and quickly Valve ran a ridiculous sale of Team Fortress 2 yesterday for the low low price of $2.49. This sale only lasted a few hours and by the time I heard about the sale there was only about 45 minutes left in the sale. But after the sale Valve released a Halloween styled update for the game.

This new patch contained a time sensitive set of achievements and a limited time only new map. These new achievements will only work from now thru November 2 and can only be locked in the new Harvest. The new Harvest map is a Halloween themed King of Hill Map littered with exploding pumpkins, wandering ghosts and a clue that the rumored tenth class is in fact dead.

The good ol' folks at Valve have wrapped up work on Left 4 Dead 2, which means that the TF2 team are back in action, and today they're blogging about some of the models seen in their Meet the Sniper video. You can see pictures of all of these models (or "assets") at the blog here.

You can now also use all these models and assets in your Team Fortress 2 maps. The models should all have been downloaded by your Steam installation automagically, but you still need to refresh all SDK content for them to show up in Hammer. Have fun mapping; I look forward to seeing all these things in some old-fashioned Capture the Flag maps.

A day or two ago, fake TF2 update fliers circulated various Team Fortress 2 forums including the official Steam Forums, and Facepunch Studios. Nothing too out of the ordinary, aside from the fact that this update includes a weaponized dog. Forum goers as usual brushed it off as another fake, and for good reason.

But in a very recent blog post, the crafty demons at Valve published a TF2 Blog post featuring a patent pending paper regarding the Guard Dog.

What are you up to, Valve?

"For all Valve's expertise in the software field, the studio has always lagged behind in one crucial area: merchandise. In particular, action figures, and in particular, Team Fortress 2.

Well, Half-Life as well, but people have done that. And it's "people" - not Valve - that are behind these Team Fortress 2 figures.

Sure, they're not what I'd have chosen - the game's exaggerated art style would be better-suited to vinyl figures - but that's what's called nitpicking. These are still awesome."
The process usually starts with a team discussion: This helps us determine the goals of the map we're going to build. In this case, we wanted a game mode that had an intense, centralized experience with quick player turnaround. We liked some of the facets of Arena mode, but it was clear that many players don't like to wait for the next round to play.

What does this mean? It means modders have access to some of gaming's finest characters and can alter their appearance and movements as they see fit. This will help out now only those looking to spice up the appearance of the game, but machinima enthusiasts as well, as it'll allow them to "have more control over how characters animate in their movies."

The event will take place starting July 25th and end on July 26th. During that time there will be a prize giveaway.

"Today we're releasing an update to the Source SDK that includes the .vmf source files for many of the official TF2 maps. This is something we've wanted to do for a while, especially as we've been growing the range of game modes in TF. Here's the list of maps that are included in the update: Lumberyard, Ravine, Badlands, Dustbowl, Granary, Gravelpit, 2Fort, Badwater, Goldrush, and Hydro."

"First off, a quick note: We put so much stuff into this update that we didn't manage to cover it all on the internets before the update went live, so we made a special Bonus page. In addition, our merchandising crew had as much fun coming up with Spy & Sniper themed merchandise as we did making the update, so make sure you go and check it all out.

Secondly, we wanted to take a moment to talk about the new item drop system in the update, since we're getting a lot of questions about it."

Thankfully, it doesn't sound like Valve will go ahead with its April Fool's Day plans to add jars of Sniper piss as a weapon, but do something almost as unexpected. Robin Walker writes on the official TF2 blog what the update plans to address with the Sniper class, which may bring the rifleman a little closer to his targets.

"It's been a couple of weeks since we posted, so we thought it'd be good to do some housekeeping. The next class pack will focus on the Sniper. It's actually shaping up to be the largest TF2 update yet, with multiple new maps and a bunch of gameplay tweaks. In addition, we've got another update in the works that should be done before the Sniper, and that one will include some new content for all classes."

Attached below are videos of skills and feats that were featured in the news update.

"One of the things we've been thinking about for a while now is how to improve the player experience around finding a server to play on. It's a tricky problem because our master servers need to ask a game server for its details, and that server can lie to us if it wants to. We decided we needed to find a way of scoring servers, with a goal of finding and delisting ones we considered "bad". The scoring system had to penalize lying without penalizing custom game rules, because some players like custom game rules. Best case, the system needed to work entirely from data that didn't come from the servers themselves, so they couldn't lie to us in any way to affect it."

"We have sounded the alert and released a quick fix for an exploit that some unscrupulous players were using to wield items on invalid classes. I have considered an appropriate punishment for the good-for-nothings responsible for this horrendous breach of conduct. Death, of course - but death is too good for disappointments such as these. Instead, their unlockable items have been removed for a month."

Watchtower is an Arena map that plays unlike any of Valve's Arena maps, with a heavy focus on vertical space and long, open sight lines, whilst Junction is a Gravel-Pit style map that the community has been heckling to include for months.

"On Tuesday we shipped an update that added a bunch of features / bugfixes / balancing tweaks that came out of the community's feedback. In particular, it made some changes to the underlying TF damage system, and as part of that, it modified the way critical hits are determined. We thought it might be interesting to dig a little into the change, and hopefully give you some insight into our thinking."

"Hopping into the Way Back Machine reminds us that Team Fortress 2 originally sported a traditional art style. One of the first classes to get a redesign was everyone's favorite Boston southie, the Scout. Although concept artist Dhabih Eng promised to harm people if the original concept art for the Scout was ever released, Valve has nevertheless added the art to its blog. From a military look (as seen above) to a track-suit wearing delivery boy, the Scout has seen his fair share of edits. Those of you interested in the evolution of Team Fortress 2's Scout should check out Valve's blog."

Over at the Team Fortress 2 blog Valve's Robin Walker posted an update regarding the next round of content additions and tweaks. Adjustments to the Scout class are essentially finished at this point, says Walker, and work on the next update is underway.

"The weapons and achievements are all nailed down, and we just have to finish up the final artwork on them," said Walker. "We like to do the final art as late as possible to ensure that we don't waste any work, which turned out to be a good decision this time around due to the large number of unlockables we tried out as alternatives to the Scattergun. Balancing his replacement weapon has been very tricky due to large threat difference of the Scout between skilled and non-skilled hands. More on that soon."

From the article: "Don't get me wrong, sales data is great, and I always love pouring over the monthly NPD reports to see just how much more money Nintendo has managed to print; and when I hear that World of Warcraft has passed the 11.5 million subscriber mark, it certainly makes a mental impact. But the questions always remain: "When people bring that Nintendo Wii home, do they actually play it?" "Just how dedicated are these WoW players?"

Thanks to the Nielsen ratings, which measure usage for the Top 10 PC titles and all major consoles, partial answers to both those questions and more await you after the break."

Bloke Bingo, a UK bingo website aimed at blokes is giving away a TF2 server to a lucky clan or community.

Bloke Bingo already give away computer games and consoles so it does seem a logical step for them to wade into the gaming server market.

The 30 man TF2 server is running on the Team Host platform at the IP address: 85.234.149.103:27018 so it would be prudent to check it out before applying.

There are a number of conditions to receiving the server but full RCON access is given.

From Bloke Bingo:
"Basically we looking for a clan or community to look after our TF2 server. Of course we want to get Bloke Bingo's name out there but that doesn't stop you enjoying this opportunity! This server will give you somewhere to meet and of course most of all, play and have fun!"
Below are two great deals for the cheap gamer. Both are great prices for fantastic games. Banjo was already being sold at $40 but has now become a steal at Amazon. Team Fortress 2 is worth the money for hours of enjoyment. Make sure to look around for the best deals as they become even more frequent.

A update for Team Fortress 2 released on December 11, 2008 contains some significant game play changes:

* The Engineer's teleporters can now be upgraded to level three. It will recharge faster the higher level it is
* The Engineer's dispensers can now be upgraded to level three. It will give out metal and heal faster as it is upgraded
* Spies will be able to recharge their cloaking ability by picking up ammo off of the ground or from health cabinets
* Some changes to the second part of the first stage of Goldrush to give the attackers more of an advantage
* Any weapons that fire bullets (shotguns, sniper's machine gun, heavy's minigun, etc.) can now break apart the Demoman's stickybombs
* The icon on the HUD for a person calling for Medic will now give more information to the medic (if the target is low on health, on fire, etc.)
* Added an achievement tracker that will allow people to choose specific achievements that they are trying to get
* There is now a custom icon for death messages when the player was killed from a critical hit
* Added a new particle effect for when a player enters the water
* Added smoke to the feet of a rocket jumping soldier
* Players will now have some particles swirling around them so other players can see when they are overhealed

XBox 360 owners can expect the same gameplay enhancements in the future.
Today they launched a new patch adding some offensively oriented new features. In the official blog post, Valve's Robin Walker also comments on future updates.

The next class pack will be the Scout, Valve is porting over portions of L4D's engine to TF2, and the Xbox 360 massive update patch is definitely coming. Sometime.

Destructoid writes: "Recently Valve announced that the Xbox 360 version of Team Fortress 2 (packaged in the Orange Box collection) is receiving a "massive" update that will "include pretty much everything" that Valve has "shipped on the PC in the last year." That includes classes, levels, and weapons upgrades that 360 owners haven't been able to touch thus far.

The posting on the official TF2 blog cautions that no date has been confirmed for the content, but we're sure plenty of players are excited about their forgotten console port of the popular multiplayer game. In addition to the Xbox 360 news, the posting also provides information on an abundance of content for the PC version that should roll out "within the next few days."

Players will be able to upgrade Teleporters and Dispensers to level 3, as well as recharge their cloaking ability as a Spy by picking up stray ammo. Valve also informed readers that the next big class pack will feature the Scout. Last, but not least, Valve will be porting some of their engine improvements from Left 4 Dead into TF2 to ensure that players have an easier time building turrets outside of spawn points."

Eagle eyed players of the Left 4 Dead demo have discovered some interesting information on the back of cereal boxes in the game. Seems the fake cereal is giving away free Team Fortress 2 action figures and urges people to collect all ten. However, there are only 9 classes in TF2. Could this be Valve's way of hinting at a new class for the game?
