Amy Crider writes:

"Today is a very sad day for me, as I will be leaving the Tabula Rasa staff to pursue another opportunity. With every build, I've watched this game transform for the better and I'm eager to see what's in store once it goes to the Live servers. With a new Lead Designer and end-game content directives such as Epic Instances, PVP CP's, and Mechs - this is an exciting time for TR!

Before I leave, I want to thank the PlanetTR staff for all the hard work and dedication they have put in to make the Tabula Rasa community so great. PlanetTR is a community person's dream - always coming up with new and interesting events, promoting the game, and just being an overall area where players can freely banter with each other.

Thank you to the Destination Games Devs, QA, and GMs that welcomed me with open arms when I joined the team. They are some of the most talented, friendly, and customer-focused people I have had a chance to work with."

Tom Potter has stepped down to pursue another opportunity, and Susan Kath has stepped up to the plate to take on the role of Lead Designer in the epic SF MMO Tabula Rasa. Susan is more than qualified, having worn numerous different hats in her career with TR, and been with the project for four and a half years.

In her meaty introduction, Susan quickly switches from talking about herself (which she dismisses as 'boring') to talking about Tabula Rasa's future. There is no doom. There is only awesome. The coming content includes 'a new instanced map, in which players (with or without clans) can battle over control points in order to win exclusive rewards.' There are prototype mechs in development, and a tantalizing system of mech customization through a form of alternative advancement.

Massively: Last night, gamesindustry.biz broke a double rumor: that NCsoft Europe would be shedding staff (not closing altogether, as is being reported elsewhere) and that Tabula Rasa would be closing shortly. While we have received no official comment as yet on the alleged job losses, we are delighted to report that NCsoft staff member 'Ziggidy Zaggidy' has stated outright over on planettr.com that there are 'no current plans to can Tabula Rasa'.

We should also add here that contrary to the claim at gamesindustry.biz (repeated by us) that 'speculation that Tabula Rasa was to be discontinued wasn't addressed' last time similar rumors circulated, the NCsoft staff did actually state that the Austin studio changes would not affect Tabula Rasa. We apologise for not refuting the gamesindustry.biz claim sooner.
The star of the hit Comedy Central show The Colbert Report will have his DNA digitized and sent to the International Space Station with Richard Garriott for the wildly-popular Tabula Rasa promotion Operation Immortality.

"I am thrilled to have my DNA shot into space, as this brings me one step closer to my life-long dream of being the baby at the end of 2001," said Colbert. Garriott comments on the decision to add Colbert to the growing list of popular celebrities joining the project, "Is there a better person for us to turn to for this high-level responsibility?"

One of the more significant updates mentioned is the Omega Labs instance, which is only available to level 50+ players, but numerous other changes to maps and missions are detailed at the Tabula Rasa site. Improved game mechanics, fixed interactions, and enhancements to how shadows and hues are displayed are all outlined in the patch notes as well.
We took a tour of the facilities guided by Richard Garriott himself, and we invite you to join us as we learn all about the design of Logos, hear all the details on how Tabula Rasa is developed, and see the TR developers' top priorities.

Eurogamer writes: "NCsoft has told Eurogamer that Tabula Rasa has a growing player base and is not in as much trouble as recent financial reports seem to suggest.

"Tabula Rasa has a dedicated player base, which is growing month on month," said an NCsoft Europe spokesman.

"Tabula Rasa offers players a different kind of MMO experience, enhancing our portfolio of game titles. The game play mechanics are very different to that of a typical MMO - those who have experienced the game have recognised these innovative features and applauded them.

'A recent European trial promotion was met with great demand; we will be doing a similar promotion later in the year.'"
Since release they've had 8 new content updates, introduced alien hybrids, and added respec tokens to the mix, and for the week beginning May 5th and ending May 12th players who've passed on the action can log into their accounts and see how the game has been shaping up, completely free.

Starr Long, the Producer of Richard Garriott's Tabula Rasa, updates us on the state of the game, as well as moving forward to the exciting things to come:

"I would be remiss if I don't clarify the matter of rumored 'massive layoffs' within NCsoft North America and the Tabula Rasa team. While the game has not taken off as quickly as we had hoped, we also launched in an insanely competitive time frame, with several well-known intellectual properties launching follow up products at the same time. However, the fact of the matter is that we are transitioning from a pre-launch crunch-mode development team to a live service team. This is standard in our industry-you ramp up to launch a game and then ramp down once it's live. This is what we are doing over the next several weeks, and it only affects the Tabula Rasa team. Once all is said and done, we will still have a substantial live team for industry standards. As you can see by the new features we're working on, we're still planning on lots of great content and updates all year long."

NCSoft's chief financial officer, Lee Jae-ho, has told The Korean Times that Tabula Rasa has proven to be a financial disaster.

Featuring heavy involvement from Richard Garriott, the sci-fi MMO was supposed to rattle the genre and take it to the next evolutionary step courtesy of the game's real-time combat and battlefield strategy. But it's gone down like a cup of cold sick.
Dec 6, 2007

Richard Garriott has attacked the beta test of his sci-fi MMO Tabula Rasa, saying that game has been hurt by inviting too many testers.

Speaking about marketing in relation to the game, Garriott said, "I actually think the biggest mistake was made not by the marketing department, but by the development team. We invited too many people into the beta when the game was still too broken."

"We burned out some quantity of our beta-testers when the game wasn't yet fun," he added. "As ...

NCsoft is slowly but steadily expanding to the non-game Internet service sector, while its cash-cow game business is losing vigor.

Korea's largest game company this year has released a series of social-networking services from Openmaru, an in-house software studio, with strong support from its CEO Kim Taek-jin. Meanwhile, its stock price almost halved over the past two months, as investors raised doubt about the prospect of its online games business.

CEO Kim said Wednesday that the firm will increase investment in the online services sector, which is dominated by big portal operators such as Naver, Daum and SK Communications.

"After games, the Internet has become my new dream," he said during a special lecture to students of Seoul National University.

Most MMO players know the story of IGE and Affinity Media by now, (the owners of WoWhead, Allakhazam, Thottbot and WoWinterface), and their relationship. A really interesting article popped up on Radar Online today which highlights some of the dodgy characters that are involved in the Affinity Media business which had claimed to have no involvement with IGE. Brock Pierce who is an advisor and a board member of Affinity Media, is highlighted in the above article and I have to say there's some pretty unsavoury stuff here pointing at child abuse. This has been brought up before regarding Brock Pierce who has apparently denied charges but there are filed legal cases which he has tried to settle.

In related news, there has been paperwork filed this week where IGE admits that it is Affinity Media (see additional link). Not that anyone doubted it. Next time you hit up an Affinity Media site, just think about who you are supporting and who's pockets your traffic is lining with cash.
Nov 12, 2007

History lesson time: "Tabula rasa" is a Latin phrase popularized by John Locke in the 17th century. Translated to English it reads as "clean slate" and describes Locke's notion of human nature. In terms of Richard Garriott's new MMORPG, intellectually titled Tabula Rasa, the concept works on several levels. In the game's story, it refers to humanity starting over on a new planet after an alien invasion. For gameplay it hints at the cloning system that allows you to take a single ...

"One of the fundamental goals for Richard Garriott's Tabula Rasa was to simulate a war by creating what we call a dynamic battlefield. One of the ways we did that was to have the NPCs fight each other, but we wanted to take these battles a step further where they didn't just fight each other sporadically as they encountered each other. Instead, we wanted them to actually fight over key pieces of territory which could alter the game environment in that area. These key territories are control points, and they are an integral part of what defines our dynamic battlefields."

That's the question gamers and the people who love them are bound to ask this fall as they take in the latest crop of big-budget video games. Since the 1970s, dragons, orcs, wizards and dwarfs have been staples of interactive entertainment, yet this holiday season there are hardly any top new games in the traditional fantasy mode.

Instead 2007 has been dominated by perhaps the deepest lineup of science fiction games ever.
Tabula Rasa producer Starr Long has revealed that the MMO will suffer a small delay while it slaps on a final coat of polish. Originally slated for an October 19 release, Richard Garriott's new venture in MMO land will now launch worldwide on November 2. Tabula Rasa pre-orders will still get to start playing three days early, but that will now kick off on October 30.

"This short but critical amount of time will give us time to address several issues including stability and balance ...
Famed game designer and space travel enthusiast, Richard Garriott sure makes a good case for his latest sci-fi MMO, Tabula Rasa. It's promising all the sorts of things we'd like to see changed in the stagnant genre. Like Garriott, we're tired of the typical whack-a-mole combat, class systems that lock you into choices you made without even playing the game, and forgettable plot points.

Tabula Rasa seems ready to address these issues with its semi-shooter combat system, flexible ...
Tabula Rasa has gone gold and will launch across Europe and North America on October 19. As an extra incentive you get on there three days early if you pre-order.

Theres been a lot of hype about Richard Garriotts upcoming MMO, Tabula Rasa. Its out-of-this-world sci-fi setting - which stands in contrast to the ocean of high fantasy WoW clones on the market - and its untraditional combat scheme - that introduces a mix between first-person shooters and traditional MMO gameplay - piqued our interest when we first scouted out the title.

Each new player will start out as a recruit with basic firearms skills and access to Tabula Rasas mysterious Logos powers. ...
Richard Garriott, former Origin man and currently executive producer at NCSoft, Austin, where he's involved with Tabula Rasa, reckons the traditional MMORPG has hit its limit and the stage is now set for innovation in the genre.

"I think that if all you're trying to do is do what we'll call the traditional feature set, where you highlight an opponent and do the Whack-a-Mole combat and what I'll call the 'WoW' feature set, I think yes, World of Warcraft is the end of that feature set arc," ...

NC Soft announced a deal with Sony to bring games exclusively to the Playstation Network, and Tabula Rasa may end up being one of them. At the moment, they're just trying to get it finished and launched, but Richard Garriott (who gave the demo today in full Tabula Rasa uniform, beret and all) said that they'll consider porting it to the PS3.
Dubbed Lord British during his high school days for what his peers perceived as a British accent, Richard Garriott is best known as the creative force behind the Ultima series. Garriott has often donned medieval attire to promote his fantasy games in the past, but at publisher, NCsofts press event during this years E3, the gaming luminary updated his attire to promote his new sci-fi themed MMO, Tabula Rasa.

Always the showman, Garriotts futuristic military uniform fit well with Tabula Rasas ...
An outspoken eccentric with a passion for videogames, he was one of the first people to bring RPGs to the PC with Akalabeth, which grew into the nine-part Ultima epic. He co-founded developer/publisher Origin, arguably one of the most important developers of all time.
So the Earth was destroyed - space invaders, inevitably, going by the name of the Bane. What chance did humanity have? We can barely get into orbit. The Bane crosses galaxies just to burn worlds.

A few of us managed to escape through the uncovered technology of the Banes estranged brother-alien race, the Eloh. We found other races willing to resist the Bane and bound together into a force that called itself the Allied Free Sentients.
Richard Garriott's Tabula Rasa - to give the game it's full, official name - is a sci-fi MMORPG that combines fast-paced action with such traditional genre fare as character development and guilds (or clans in this case). In terms of setting and plot, it throws players into the future where a cosmic war between an alien race known as Bane and the galaxy's remaining free sentient beings - the Allied Free Sentients - is being fought.

Obviously there's considerable buzz surrounding the title as ...

The PC game is executive producer Garriott's signature creative vision.
