Upcoming film tie-in hangs ten onto every console and portable under the summer sun

Surfing games have never been done quite right, but Ubisoft Montreal (Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory) will be taking another stab at it this summer with Surf’s Up, based on Sony Picture’s upcoming CG surfing flick of the same name. The game will hit the PS2, PS3, PSP, Xbox 360, Wii, DS, GBA and PC on May 22^nd. C’mon Ubi, where’s our N-Gage port?

As Cody Maverick, an up-and-coming surfer entering his first pro competition, you’ll compete against a large cast of wacky characters, all voiced by their real life/movie counterparts – Jeff Bridges, Zooey Deschanel, Shia LaBeouf, etc. (or The Dude, Trillian and “that kid from Transformers ” for you movie nerds). The film looks relatively charming, so hopefully the game won’t fall too squarely into the “sub-par licensed game” trap.

They promise innovation AND pick-up-and-play surfing mechanics for single and multiplayer gameplay as you play through the tournament; they’re a talented studio so we’ve got our fingers crossed that they can deliver. The visuals look colorful and sharp, and we’re looking forward to checking out the apparently impressive water simulation physics.

They may be third place in the race of game releases that can rightfully say “Cowabunga!” this year, but we’ll be sure to keep you posted with any new info or impressions as the game nears release. Make sure to hit the Images tab above for a couple more screenshots.
