“I've been trying to develop a sequel to Hard Boiled, but didn't know how,” said action movie helmer John Woo in a video interview shown at Midway's Pulse media event in late February. Looks like he found one: John Woo Presents Stranglehold, is an upcoming action/adventure game that reunites Woo with his frequent star Chow Yun-Fat in a return to the world of Inspector Tequila.

Better to call it a “spiritual sequel,” though; the game won't pick up where the film left off, necessarily. Instead, the plot pits good cop Tequila against both the Hong Kong crime lords and the Russian mob, which has taken his wife hostage in Chicago. Chow Yun-Fat reprises his role as Tequila and the actor has already been subjected to a full-body scan, so his digital likeness can be as accurate as possible. Well, as accurate as you'd want it to be; there are some things on 50-year-old actors that we don't need to see digitally reproduced.

Of course, we do want to see some specific stuff re-created, including hyperkinetic twin-pistol shootouts, slow-motion and freeze-frame cinematography, and even those wacky white doves, all of which have become Woo trademarks. To pull that off, the game will use what it calls “Tequila Time,” which slows the action down for precise twin-gun targeting and an overwhelming sense of “whoah.” Yes, slow-mo shooting has been seen in games before, but give it another shot - after all, John Woo came up with the concept in the first place. It should be interesting to see what he does with it in his own game.
