There's no shortage of fiction in the Star Trek universe, but harvesting those resources can be a double edged sword as Cryptic don't want to annoy the most hardcore of fans. Perhaps the biggest challenge is crafting gameplay which faithfully emulates the series and it's something which Cryptic are investing a huge amount of effort:

"When you think about Star Trek there is no way to separate the image of the iconic starships from the away team exploring an alien landscape. We knew right off the bat that we'd have to make both the space and ground experiences. That's two games right there!"

Making one game is hard enough, but trying to tie together two different forms of gameplay into one cohesive experience must be incredibly challenging. So far most of the previews have featured the space combat at great length, but we are yet to see what it's like questing on a planets surface.

NowGamer: Cryptic Studios producer Craig Zinkievich has talked about some of the possible post-launch ideas that could be headed to Star Trek Online

Speaking in an exclusive interview with NowGamer, Zinkievich suggested that omitted ideas for the MMO could be included as the game evolves. Asked whether the team had many ideas the producer replied: "Plenty. Some of the biggest were allowing players to play as neutral factions (like traders) or play as an officer on another player's ship."
This is a warship that packs a lot more heat than you'd imagine, which is kind of the point. It's also highly maneuverable because of its overall size and engine power, giving it the very tactical option of firing off a torpedo before turning its strongest shield towards an impending attack. With these traits, it makes a wonderful convoy, protecting all kinds of larger ships against everything from raiders to the Borg.
Given how zealous science fiction fans can be about continuations, offshoots, or reboots of their favorite properties, we've been curious about how well Star Trek Online will match up with player expectations, especially given the disappointment some Trekkie gamers have had with older Star Trek titles of the non-MMO variety.

"Designed in the 2390's (around 14 years before the game's stardate, 2409) the Oslo class is one of the earlier heavily modular ships pushed for by Starfleet Corps of Engineers after the Dominion wars. Thus, the Oslo was based on the Norway class, although shares many components with the Akira and Zephyr classes. By emphasizing on this type of design, an Oslo class starship crew is capable of rapid field repairs after battle using generally whatever components they have on hand."

The interview takes place seven years after the last episode of Voyager, and centres around Seven's decision to leave Starfleet. Now known as her human name, Annika Hansen, she is described as looking almost completely human, although her characteristic directness is still very much present.

"After we got the license to Star Trek and the initial excitement died down – it was time to get to work. We picked a group of directors and designers to sketch out what we wanted to do with the game, and that group sat in a room for numerous 3 hour "lock in" sessions over the course of a couple weeks to hash out the core aspects of the game."

In a developer Q&A on the Cryptic site, poster Awen reveals that CBS, the maker of the Star Trek series, allowed the STO game designers to define what these races look like and introduce them into the game, along with the known races from the Star Trek universe.
This next year holds some serious milestones for MMOs, specifically the existence of many home console versions. What will happen when A-list MMO titles invade the living rooms of millions of people? Will they have mass appeal? Before you answer those questions make sure you strap-in, gun it to 88, and watch for the three bright flashes. This is...

Cryptic Studios, of City of Heroes fame, helm this highly anticipated stellar venture, which means that at the very least we’ll be able to fiddle with a Play-Doh Klingon’s face until it looks just the way we want it. ...

Eurogamer writes: "New details of forthcoming MMO Star Trek Online have popped up on the official website.

According to a Q&A with developer Cryptic, you will see ships just like the Enterprise, Defiant and Voyager - or Cruisers, Escorts and Science Vessels, as they're known.

"More details on the exact roles and differences are coming soon, but for now, suffice it to say that the ship roles are a combination of naval combat and traditional MMO gameplay," the Q&A reads.

'Klingon ships are different, and reflect their style and culture. And everything will be very customisable and very Star Trek.'"

Massively: Magazine Game Informer's October issue (due to appear on stands any day now) will feature a ten page report on Star Trek Online, with new information and artwork. The game even graces the cover of the issue, which can already be seen online. It's not a screenshot, though. It's just some artwork depicting Sovereign and Galaxy class starships.

Previously featured articles in Game Informer have generally been quite substantial; they have combined tons of new images with descriptions of gameplay and dozens of quotes from developers. We haven't seen the STO piece yet, but it's probably worth flipping through at your local newsstand.

First off, Cryptic confirmed that the game will feature an economy, but one that "makes sense in the Star Trek universe".

"Since the Federation has explicitly done away with money, expect bartering and trading of goods to be an important part of the economy. Less tangible forms of economics such as Reputation are also not out of the question," explains the FAQ."

In an FAQ published on the game's official site, the question "Will console and PC players be on the same servers?" is posed. The response goes as follows - "We would like that to be the case. There is nothing technologically keeping us from making it so."

The main points to come out of it are that the will possibly be PC and console play on the same servers, that these servers will combine PvP and competitive PvE, trading will play a role (although the Federation has done away with money...), and will be set 30 years from the events of Star Trek Nemesis. Developers Cryptic seem to be looking for every level of gamer to join, including such vital information about the internet requirements, such as the need to have it connected to play... Thanks.

GiN Reports:

"Cryptic Studios, a leading independent developer and publisher of massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs), today revealed at the annual Star Trek Convention the first details and gameplay trailer for Star Trek Online, a massively multiplayer online game based on the legendary Star Trek franchise.

Convention attendees and Trek fans from around the globe attended the live webcast event held in the Gene Roddenberry Theater. Cryptic's Chief Creative Officer, Jack Emmert, was joined on stage by renowned Star Trek actor Leonard Nimoy, as he outlined the details of Star Trek Online.

"I spent many, many Saturday afternoons watching reruns of Star Trek and dreaming of its worlds. Leonard Nimoy helped inspire my imagination of what mysteries the universe might in fact hold," said Emmert. "I'd like to think that very same imagination is what fuels my desire and drive as a game designer, pushing toward creating an MMO that is the ultimate Star Trek experience."
If you, like me, have spent several hours sitting in the corner curled up in a ball crying because you couldn't be there, dry those tears! The Star Trek Online website has updated today with info on the simultaneous live webcast of the event. It kicks off at 1:30 PM Pacific on Sunday afternoon, so you might want to pencil that stardate down on your...starcalendars?

Destructoid writes: "Awhile back, we showed you a timer on developer Cryptic's official page that was a bit suspicious in origin. The natural conjecture that this timer would count down to an official announcement of Star Trek Online now appears to be true. WarCry recently found two different announcements of the game, which go quite a way to validate the revival of the once ill-fated game.

The first piece of evidence comes from the Star Trek Convention site. The announcement is painfully blunt, but if you look at the schedule for August 10 at 1:30 P.M. there is an event planned called 'Star Trek Online Revealed.' Apparently, when it comes to videogames, these guys really don't like to beat around the bush.

Another interesting tidbit comes from the Game Career Guide, where Cryptic Studios plastered an advertisement on page 42 that states they are hiring for positions. Notably, they claim to be "developer and publisher of...Champions Online and Star Trek Online." I think Cryptic may have killed the need for speculation on their timer already, unless it's for a Stargate MMO or something."

"For those who don't know, Star Trek Online was a Star Trek MMORPG being developed in 2004 by Perpetual Entertainment. On January 14th, 2008, Perpetual announced that it was no longer working on the game and that the license and assets had been transferred to an unnamed San Francisco Bay Area based game developer. For a while now, it's been rumored that that developer is Cryptic Studios, the developers of City of Heroes and City of Villians.

FiringSquad has learned that publisher Bethesda Softworks, the current owner of the video-PC game rights to the Star Trek franchise, will not be publishing a game based on the upcoming J.J. Abrams directed Star Trek movie. Company spokesperson Pete Hines confirmed this news with FiringSquad today.

Hines also stated that Bethesda Softworks's sister company, the new MMO based developer ZeniMax Online Studios, will not be taking over the development of Star Trek Online.

When asked if Bethesda Softworks was going to continue publishing Trek games or if it would let its current license expire, Hines only told FiringSquad cryptically, "TBD."
City of Heroes developer Cryptic Studios is being linked with Star Trek Online following reports that Perpetual Entertainment is no longer working on the MMO.

In November last year it was speculated that a new mystery company at the STO helm may be re-targeting the game at a casual audience.

Now TrekMovie.com reports via a "source" the negotiations are currently underway to get Star Trek Online assets and license into the hands of a new developer.

Though the studio would not confirm if it is currently handling the development of Star Trek Online (PC), Cryptic's tapping of P2 employees seats the studio as the most likely candidate to continue the project. The news does not, however, mean that the game is canceled. The license, as well as the game's content - but not the code - have been transferred to another Bay Area development studio where work will continue. It is not entirely clear at this time what this means for the individual developers who worked on the project at P2.

As a company, P2 Entertainment will continue on with their profitable Perpetual Platform, which has been licensed to industry leaders like BioWare, and refocus their core business on the casual games market.

Public relations firm Kohnke Communications has filed charges against Star Trek Online developer Perpetual Entertainment, alleging the company of breach of contract, fraud, intentional interference with contract, and other similar charges. The charges stem from Perpetual's recent shift in ownership, in which most of its assets were transferred to another company and its Gods & Heroes: Rome Rising project was placed on indefinite hold.

Kohnke alleges that Perpetual owes it $10,675 in outstanding invoices, in addition to fees for its work promoting Gods & Heroes. Depending on the game's success after launch, Kohnke would be entitled to a minimum of $70,000 and a maximum of $280,000. The complaint alleges that Kohnke's work on promoting the game should entitle it to the maximum amount.

"Kohnke's public relations campaign was successful in creating pre-release 'buzz' around Gods & Heroes, and in convincing reviewers to write positive reviews about the game," the text reads. "Kohnke is also entitled to punitivie and/or exemplary damages due to P2, Keen and McKibbin's conduct, which was fraudulent, oppressive, and with malice."

Shacknews has received a considerable amount of new information regarding today's Perpetual news from a source close to the company, who requested to remain anonymous. Some information was gleaned from a letter detailing various changes to the company and Star Trek Online, which was recently distributed to all Perpetual employees.

Perpetual has been acquired by new ownership, reportedly a media company looking to use Star Trek Online to make its first major inroads into the video game market. Along with the acquisition comes a partial retargeting of Star Trek Online to what Shacknews' source describes as a "more casual" experience, one which may potentially eschew subscription fees in favor of the practice of charging real money for optional in-game items, a practice popularized by various Korean MMOs.

In an SEC filing, Korean-based developer Gravity (g) disclosed that in October, it received a notice that U.S.-based online game developer Perpetual, in which Gravity invests, would be liquidating all of its assets.

The date on which Gravity stated the notice was sent, October 10th, is the same day that Perpetual announced that its PC MMORPG Gods and Heroes: Rome Rising would be put on hold indefinitely.

It is unclear whether this announcement also affects Star Trek Online, Perpetual's other MMO, which was still believed to be in development.
The franchise may be (ahem) a logical choice for the massively-multiplayer treatment, yet the makers of Star Trek: Online have so far avoided the interminable hype machine - perhaps aware of how bluff and bluster can only end in disappointment (e.g. Star Wars: Galaxies). Still, the fabric for a fulfilling Starfleet jaunt is certainly here: nine playable races, all manner of starships and stations, crew-based ship-on-ship combat and many, many planets for you to beam down onto for tricordering ...
