STALKER gets pruned
[PC] Developer provides feature update for ill-fated shooter
Words: Dave Harrison, GamesMaster UK
Developer GSC Game World has compiled a list of features that have been tweaked, developed or cut from its long-in-development PC first-person shooter, STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl.
Rumors have arisen since the presentation of the latest version of the free-roaming shooter at last month's E3, suggesting that the long-awaited game will not deliver many of the originally promised features, prompting GSC to respond with details of current tweaks.
So, to cut to the chase, here's what's changed: the use of vehicles has been limited, as driving around the Exclusion Zone was not particularly easy or comfortable due to the unique environment; sleeping will only take place in cutscenes; eating and hunger remain in the game and GSC is thinking of adding drinking as well.
GSC refutes the rumor that
STALKER has become a corridor-based, scripted shoot 'em-up. It does admit, however, that it's had to compromise its initial vision of producing a game that is "fully life simulation-driven gameplay with an unobtrusive storyline." So now the initial part of the game will be story-led until gamers understand the laws of the
STALKER world.
So there we go. And you never know: we might even get to play it one day...
