Speedball 2

Speedball 2

Brutal deluxe remade

It’s that online service - rather than the spanking new visuals - that should make the greatest difference. You’re going to be playing alongside, as well as against, many other people, and suddenly that changes the scope of the original beast. The teams can now be tweaked in multiplayer, with a line-up of tough ladies and cyborgs to choose from. Kylotonn suggests that you’ll even be able to buy star players online. While they won’t be better than the standard line up in the vanilla game, they will be different, which could be an interesting option for serious players. Those serious players will also be able to indulge in community options such as uploading their team logos and the matches they want recorded for posterity.

The crucial thing about Speedball 2 was that it always felt somehow solid. Will the remake have any trouble recreating the feel of colliding armored men?

“Not at all,” says Montgomery. “It will have that same solid feel and with new motion capture animations it will feel like you have collided yourself.”

Finally, we couldn’t help speculating that with Speedball 2 on the way we might see some remakes of other 16-bit classics; a return for co-op steampunk shooter Chaos Engine, perhaps? Montgomery isn’t giving much away: “I can’t tell you my secrets. But you are on the right track, so watch this space.”
