For an older generation of gamers, there’s little need for an explanation of why the remake of Speedball 2 should be so exciting (and yet so terrifying). But why should a younger generation be interested in the return of such an ancient title?
For Mike Montgomery, the veteran developer who created the 1990 future-sports masterpiece Speedball 2, there are two reasons: instant accessibility and internet connectivity.

“It’s one of those games that you can pick up, play, and enjoy. It’s only 90 seconds each side, per game. Invite some mates around for beer and have your own competition, as anyone can play Speedball. With the internet now available to most players... you can play anyone from around the world, make your own clans, make new friends and play local and international competitions.”
The accessibility comes from the way Speedball 2 was designed for a single-button joystick. The stick controlled movement while the button was both tackle and throw. Although you’d be hard pressed to master the game, you could instantly grasp the basics.
The glistening new arena is just as players of the original will remember, as Montgomery explained: “The pitch has been updated [into 3D] to a very high standard. We have not changed the features, but will make new ones available to download at a latter stage as well as new arenas and players via our online service.”
