  • Dave Jones is the face behind Grand Theft Auto I, II, and Crackdown. He’s the man who spent his career in the Nineties churning out classic Lemmings titles before becoming the High Muckety Muck of street crime games. For the last five years he’s been working to take this self-styled gang warfare to an MMO platform, but don’t let the happy Scottish face fool you: Jones might have the smiling eyes of a kind uncle but he’s the guy who made a career pin-pointing exactly what makes crime so awesome. His games are so reliably destructive and fun that it only takes looking at his newest title All Points Bulletin to ponder “Gee, I wonder how many cars I’ll explode this game...

  • After being spawn camped by the cruel realities of life, APB is back with a snazzy new subtitle. So then, is the revamped cops 'n' robbers MMO worth your time now? Or is it doomed to crash and burn again?

  • As Homer Simpson once imagined, life is simpler under the sea. Aquarias Naija lives an uncomplicated underwater life - until her consciousness is awakened by a mysterious apparition. Who is she? Where does she come from? Are there more like her out there? And so begins the atmospheric Aquaria, a beautifully rendered 2D adventure game. Naijas awakening comes through exploration: your journey into the deeper waters or the kelp imbues her with new powers and character states, each new skill or
  • It sounded like a good idea. Just read our preview. An MMORPG in which you could literally become the ruler of the game world by achieving victory? It's brilliant. Unfortunately, while the early adopting hardcore players who earnestly defend the game will disagree, ArchLord crashes hard during the leap from idea to execution, and fails to engage on any level. The core game demands operating in a group, always, since the large and largely inexplicable hordes of enemies that litter the landscape
  • Essentially crazy, Arctic Stud Poker Run asks you to drive around icy courses on a snowmobile collecting floating cards in order to get the best poker hand by the end of the race. You can also ram and fire rockets at your opponents to knock them off course and get hold of the best cards. Single-player is enjoyable, but the real action is in the hectic multiplayer. High production values and the weird idea make this is a fun but forgettable oddity. Arctic Stud Poker Run can be downloaded here
  • ArmA II is a military simulator set in the fictional Eastern European state of Chernarus, now a dynamic battlefield in which insurgents and peacekeeping forces take AI-controlled pot-shots at one another; a wide-ranging contingent of land, sea and air vehicles patrol dynamically from base to base; and civilians and wildlife try to get on with their lives without catching bullets between the eyes.

  • As it’s set in the fictional country of Takistan, Operation Arrowhead features the racial slur “Taki”, making this fiction feel too authentic for comfort. This isn’t a criticism as for all its problems. ArmA II delivers a fierce, palpable impression of real warfare. War’s uncomfortable. People are going to be racist sometimes...

  • Combat Operations is a soldier sim. We see a boatload every year, but this one is special. This is the follow-up to Operation Flashpoint, the game that was so realistic it became a professional military simulator. The raw facts about ArmA tell one hell of a story: 400 square kilometers of island to explore, 30 different weapons, 30 controllable vehicles, accurately modeled bullet ballistics, a full weather system, accurate tides and constellations, pesky insects... Its the product of
  • Jan 8, 2008 Vladimir Kost, our ablest general, was assassinated 12 turns ago. Since his death, Kosts Kommandos, the ragtag collection of men and mecha that single-handedly saw off the Xenopod menace, has suffered defeat after defeat. Now they wait for the Mutant assault that will finish them. Things look hopeless; we shouldnt be smiling, yet we are. Were smiling because this is one of the best strategy games weve played in ages. Oh, were also smiling because Valentine, our favourite saboteur,
  • Oct 29, 2007 YouTube has already shown us that four people in a Halo level is enough to craft a sitcom. So why cant developers tell a decent war story in a wargame? Royal Flush, one of two single-player campaigns included in this first expansion for Armed Assault, opens with one of the most painful exercises in Cutscene Theatre ever committed to disc. The horrifying creepiness of immobile models spouting misogynistic HUR HUR GUNS dialogue, like Barbie for NRA members, is all the more bemusing
