As promised last week at QuakeCon, id Software has now added Mac and Linux support for their browser based free-to-play first person shooter Quake Live. In their release notes, they mention that for now Mac support is confined to Apple's Safari browser but they hope to have Firefox Mac support up and running soon.

A premium subscription service for Quake Live is on the way to the free online game, according to id founder John Carmack. During his QuakeCon keynote address, Carmack explained to the crowd that in-game advertising was not enough to support the web-based title.

SyncError announced a Quake Live update which took place today rather than the 'usual' Tuesday. Next week folks will be making their way to QuakeCon, and Quake Live will be at the forefront of the action there.

The latest update to id Software's browser-based shooter focuses on clientside features and important fixes. The fixes and additions focus on competition and shoutcasting features for QuakeCon 2009 due to take place 13-16 August in Dallas, Texas.

As expected, id have released a large update for their free-to-play browser-based game. This update contains several substantial changes to Quake Live that have required a great deal of time and testing. Streamlined account registration and plug-in installation process, dozens of lost awards, competition features, and spectator/shoutcaster additions are included.

id's Marty Stratton has said there will be a 'fairly large update' for Quake Live next Tuesday. Stratton also posted information regarding the game update policies for Quake Live, which is important for all league and tournament players; from now on updates will arrive on a Tuesdays, but not every Tuesday.

Over eight years after its release Quake III Arena is still one of the most played deathmatch games on PC, but id Software has set its sights on expanding the online shooter's playerbase with the free-to-play Quake Zero.
"We want to see the player base grow and that's a lot of what's behind Quake Zero," id CEO Todd Hollenshead told us. "We think there are a lot of people out there that would play Quake III if it didn't cost any money to buy it."
