We absolutely know that you've been waiting with eager anticipation for a feature to come along that catalogues examples of new games that share an identical name with an old game. It doesn't happen very often, so it's genuinely exciting when it does. Anyway, we've written that feature, and this is it. Direct all messages of thanks and amazement to the comments thread. K? Cheers.

Afrika | PS3 | 2009

The new Afrika: Is ...

Split-screen: "Radical Entertainment's built a solid reputation as a sandbox game developer emphasizing more on all-out fun and enjoyment than rote missions and repetition. Their latest title, Prototype, has proved that to a T and come out a great success, even against more hyped titles like inFamous and veteran franchises like Red Faction. It seems we haven't seen the last of our friendly neighbourhood sociopath Alex Mercer just yet."

The NPD numbers show an interesting battle between two similar games: Prototype and inFamous.

Excerpt: "Now, however, that the June NPD numbers are out we can finally declare a winner and put this to rest as early reports had inFamous selling around 190,000 copies for the first week, but the NPD numbers had a weaker showing of 175,900 in May. The June numbers show an additional 192,700 for inFamous, bringing it up to a total of 368,600 since launch while Prototype racked up 419,900 on the Xbox 360 alone. We don't know the number of PS3 sales, as it apparently didn't make the top 10 reported by NPD - and PC sales are currently unavailable.

But even without PS3 and PC sales it would seem that Prototype has come out as the fan favorite over inFamous."

PC gamers like open world action games just like their console counterparts and that's pretty clear in Steam's latest weekly sales report. The list shows the Radical Entertainment-Activision game Prototype zoom to the top of Steam's sales list (based on revenue for the past seven days and ending on Sunday morning).

The rest of the list includes Railworks, the new train simulation title from RailSimulator.com, in the number 9 position. Also Tripwire Interactive's co-op shooter Killing Floor continues to make a killing; it's at number 3 on the list and has so far remained in the top five since it's release in mid-May.

1. Prototype - Activision
2. Left 4 Dead - Valve
3. Killing Floor - Tripwire Interactive
4. Team Fortress 2 - Valve
5. Counter-Strike Source - Valve
6. The Orange Box - Valve
7. Call of Duty 4 - Activision
8. Penubra Collector Pack - Frictional Games
9. Railworks - Railsimulator.com
10. Plants Vs. Zombies - PopCap
Prototype: PS3 graphical feature missing from 360 and PC (News)

Prototype is rendered at 1120 by 640 pixels, with QAA (quinux anti-aliasing) on the PS3 and 2xMSAA (multisample anti-aliasing) on the Xbox 360. The differences between these two solutions for video game "jaggies" are not terribly distinct, apart from a slight blur to the image with QAA; if sufficiently integrated into the game's art style this won't severely impact visual quality (such as is seen in Killzone 2.)

Of course, resolution and aliasing are not really an issue in the PC version of the game, which depending on your set-up can render up to 2560 by 1600 pixels with 4xMSAA.

You will find that the PS3 game's framerate can suffer from significant screen tearing when there's lots of action going on (which is a common occurrence in Prototype). The Xbox 360 game is locked at 30 frames-per-second, and generally runs steadily with minimal screen tearing. Screen tearing is a phenomenon where rendered frames overlap, creating a torn look as two parts of an object fail to line up.

"Perusing the assorted New York Comic Con invitations in our inbox this morning, we stumbled across one particularly interesting line among the bullet points in an email from Activision -- a much more solid release date for upcoming pen-world/action game Prototype. And rather than put words into the company's mouth, let's look right at what came from the press release:

"Hands-on – fans get their first chance to play the highly anticipated open-world/action thriller, PROTOTYPE, planned for release in June."

We can't say for sure if we're excited for the potential 12 hours of shape-shifting, open-world madness yet, but look for our first impressions later this week (though as the picture above confirms -- yes, you can shoot blood in all directions). If you're really jonesin' for some brutality in the meantime, check out the latest trailer from last month's CES."

Prototype got delayed to 2009 because the developers wanted more time to make the game they really want to make. Basically they want to make the game a better game. There's also a chance they could put multiplayer mode back in that was taken out during development a few months ago."

Gamedaily writes: "After working on The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction for Sierra Games, Vancouver, British Columbia-based developer Radical Games embarked on a project that was more multi-dimensional. They set about creating Prototype, the first open world action game that plays out like a Jerry Bruckheimer movie, according to Tim Bennison, executive producer of the project.

Bennison and lead designer Eric Holmes were on hand at GDC to talk about their new game and show some exclusive new levels behind closed doors at the St. Regis Hotel.

In Prototype, players assume the role of Alex Mercer, a shapeshifter in present-day New York City. The city's under siege by a mysterious outbreak that's spreading throughout Manhattan, creating a scenario for a three-way war among Alex, the Army and the infected monsters that come in 40 different shapes and sizes."
These Blackwatch dudes might seem small-time compared to Alex's car-flipping and helicopter 'splosion abilities, but don't let their silly-looking suits fool you. They're trained to deal with "things" ...
Sierra dropped us a friendly e-mail this afternoon inviting us to the TimeShift launch party - not out of the ordinary – we get boozed up at industry parties all the time. What was out of the ordinary was a note attached to the invitation stating that Sierra will be raffling off an exclusive look at Prototypes co-op mode.

If you arent aware, Prototype is an open-ended conspiracy thriller centered around science experiment and anti-hero Alex Mercer, and looks to challenge ...
Alex Mercer. An innocuous name if ever there was one. But, according to developer Radical Entertainment, when he makes his debut in Prototype next summer he's going to emerge from the shadows of obscurity as one of gaming's "darkest anti-heroes" and the "ultimate ass-kicking machine." We like him already.

Whenever we've seen Prototype in action we've been massively impressed by the free-roaming inferno of carnage that Mercer seems to be able to spark without even scuffing his ...
We got a hold of ten new screens of the genre-mashing Prototype. Now we can't stop wishing we had tentacle arms with super-human strength and the ability to run over cars like a ninja - we wouldn't have to tuck our jewelry away when visiting mates in Stratford, East London.

That dude who gave us the evil-eye on the train this morning for having bulky camera equipment would have got a tentacle in the face, and we'd just car-hop from the station to the office.

Now that you've seen ...

TeamXbox recently caught up with the lead developer Eric Holmes for a lengthy interview on how Prototype came to fruition, features gamers should keep their eyes peeled for, and much more.

Based on the foundation of open world gameplay, Prototype equips players with a slew of supernatural powers to employ against the evil forces threatening to change the future of human race. With no memory of his past, the game's protagonist Alex Mercer goes on a hunt for clues as to what triggered the secret war ravaging the streets of New York. The core of Alex's arsenal will be his shapeshifting ability which will allow him to utilize a set of intriguing powers broken down into following groups: attack, defense, sense, and disguise. Though not able to fully explain each group, Eric Holmes did take his time to exemplify them....
Amongst other things like, videos, screenshots and concept art, the web site offers a few details on the main character.

Main Character: You are Alex Mercer, the Prototype: a shapeshifter with amazing powers of combat, destruction, and deception. Consume targets for their form and memories to assume a perfect disguise, or instantly transform your body into an array of deadly biological weapons, cutting your way to the heart of the conspiracy forty years in the making. Stalk the streets of New York City, searching for the life you lead before. Take the form of anyone in your path, using an arsenal of identities to confound. Exploit or annihilate your enemies. Mankind is your mask. Wage a secret war against factions with complex agendas of their own, out to capture or kill you. They are your greatest threat and the key to the secrets of your past. Confront them, find those responsible and make them pay.
We're not saying that Grand Theft Auto IV will suck. In fact, we think itll be one of next years must have titles. It's just that there's another awesome open-world action title set in New York (the real one) in the works that might make Rockstar take the backseat in 2008. The game's called Prototype, and even in its early stages of development, it looks ready to outshine GTA IV in almost every way. Yes, we're being serious.

1. It's new

Sierra today announced that they are working on a new title for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC which they describe as a "new kind of open-world game, featuring a rich story line of conspiracy, deception and deadly shape shifting action."

The game is being developed by Radical Entertainment, the folks behind Crash of the Titans and Scarface, and tells the story Alex Mercer, a man haunted by his past, fighting a secret war in New York City. There's action, there's conspiracy, and there's that deadly shape-shifting action, which is auto-hot. Apparently this shape-shifting power will allow the lead character to morph into people he meets in the game and steal their skills or powers.

Full press release after the jump.
New York City. A hooded figure stands motionless in the center of Times Square. It's morning and there are people everywhere. And we're not talking about the usual video game approximation of a crowd. It's a kinetic cluster of bodies merging and stirring through sun-bleached streets. The camera swings upwards revealing vast, intricately-rendered skyscrapers reaching towards a cloudless blue sky, turning white as the harsh sunlight hits their sides. This is not the compromised parody of NYC ...
