PC Preview | Sins of a Solar Empire
Sept 25, 2007 Developer, Ironclad has ambitious plans for the design of Sins of a Solar Empire. Billed as a "RT4X," the game attempts to marry gigantic playing fields and deep strategy - on a scale usually reserved for turn-based 4X titles - with the fast-paced action of an RTS. Like most 4X titles, Sins looks huge. Maps vary in size from large to gigantic, with the smallest consisting of several planets while the largest features multiple solar systems with planets orbiting each star. Add on ...

PC Preview | Snoopy vs the Red Baron
We know, we know. A concept like Snoopy vs The Red Baron just has "crap" written all over it. Most games based on comic strips do. But Peanuts isn't just any comic strip, and Snoopy vs The Red Baron isn't your typical slapdash kiddie game. It is, in fact, a crazed series of life-or-death dogfights in the vein of Star Wars: Rogue Squadron or StarFox, in which Snoopy and his pals have to battle their way through a cartoonified version of World War I. Everyone who's ever read Peanuts knows all ...

PC Preview | Snoopy vs the Red Baron
When you think of viable franchises to wrap around yet another World War title, Peanuts is probably last on the list. Yet here it is - and you know what? It makes sense. Snoopy's always been dreaming of taking down the Red Baron, so why not let a new generation act out that decades-long dream? Snoopy vs. the Red Baron is clearly aimed at the youngins, but from what we've seen there's actually some decent dog fighting to be ...

PC Preview | Soccer Fury
With World Cup fever catching around the globe, a new online kickabout game like Soccer Fury might be just what we need to bring the world closer together. However, the heavy-duty urban environments we were dropped in to play 3-on-3 footie didnt quite seem right. Our instincts were correct: Soccer Fury isnt just soccer - its combat soccer. Your opponent is just as likely to kick your head as the ball. Soccer Furys opening cinematic hinted that the game designers knew a thing or two about ...

PC Preview | Soldier of Fortune: Payback
Oct 22, 2007 Shooting - or knifing, or just trusty old punching in the balls - someone that youve already killed has been a gaming guilty pleasure since Castle Wolfenstein, but never before has it been a reason to buy a game. Yet so much work has gone into the enemy damage system in the upcoming FPS Soldier of Fortune: Payback that you may find yourself spending more time devising creative ways to maim prone enemies than playing the actual game. This is hardly an exaggeration: developer ...

PC Preview | Soul of the Ultimate Nation
"You know what the funniest thing about Europe is? It's the little differences," quipped Vincent Vega in Pulp Fiction. When we saw Soul of the Ultimate Nation, an upcoming massively multiplayer game set in yet another epic fantasy universe, we couldn't help but think the same thing. While the content and setting aren't exactly groundbreaking, there are little things that set SUN apart in a big way. If you are tired of questing for the same things, in the same "instanced" dungeons - small areas ...

PC - Space Siege - Space Siege - hands-on

When we last checked in on Space Siege, Chris Taylor’s classic action role-playing game series Dungeon Siege series was spinning off into the future, trading goblins for aliens (exchange rate: 2.4 aliens per goblin). While clearly a rehash of three-year-old Dungeon Siege II technology, SS shares the same dungeon-crawling appeal transplanted to a new setting, and introduces substantial new gameplay elements and philosophical questions ...

PC - Space Siege - Space Siege

There’s nothing too deep or life-encompassing about Space Siege. It is, like its goblin-bound forebear, Dungeon Siege, basically about the hack and slash. This time, however, the slash is done with an arm-mounted laser-swordfork thing, and the hack is, well, more like a blast. Grenades, electrical discharges, blazing autocannons: you’re reaping revenge as a hi-tech cyborg killer on a technology curve that would make the Terminator blush. ...

PC - Space Siege - Space Siege Despite its name share, Gas Powered Games’ Space Siege is making big departures from its dungeon-dwelling predecessor. “In Space Siege,” says ever-enthusiastic honcho Chris Taylor, “We’re not adhering to any old-school system. We’re not just carrying features along like baggage, we’re dumping it if it doesn’t make sense.”And he’s not joking either: “We’ve dropped ...

PC Preview | Space Siege
It's an impressive list. Total Annihilation. Dungeon Siege. Supreme Commander. So it's hardly surprising that, as the first tantalizing tidbits of information trickle into our inboxes, proclaiming that games development legend Chris Taylor (the man behind these three PC gaming leviathans) is working on a brand-new space-based RPG called Space Siege. Also joining us for our chat is lead designer Daniel Achterman. Staying true to the frenetic action-RPG formula that brought Gas Powered Games ...
