GameBanshee is reporting that a small team has created an open-source and cross-platform implementation of the Infinity Engine called GemRB. At its current stage of development, the engine can be used to play through the entire Baldur's Gate saga, all of Icewind Dale, and some of Icewind Dale II and Planescape: Torment on everything from Linux to the iPad to smartphones, as seen on these YouTube videos. But let's not let the real promise be obfuscated by yet another play-through of those classics - GemRB can be used to build an entirely new Infinity Engine-based game.

Player Affinity writes: Theres a tornado warning today in New York City, so Ill spend the day cowering inside, playing with all the cheap games Ill buy with these Mid-Week sales. Even if theres no tornado scare where you live, its not a bad idea to stock up just in case. Impulsedriven.com has a bunch of things on sale, but you might want to take a look at this trilogy of Sci-fi titles from Meridian 4; for $12.49 you can grab Dark Matter, Shadowgrounds, and Space Hack. Between them all, you can ride out any weather-related emergency.

Through GOG.com, you can now buy Planescape: Torment. Thats Planescape: Torment, as in one of the great roleplaying games of the 1990s, really rather difficult to pick up these days, and temperamental on modern machines even if you could dig out a copy. And here it is, on Good Old Games, for $10, compatible with all modern machines.
