Need for Speed Undercover

Need for Speed Undercover

Lifting the cover on EA’s latest Hollywood-inspired open-world racer

As a wheelman pretending to be a bad guy, this has several effects on the gameplay. Most importantly, it means the cops are back (and reportedly with smarter AI than ever before) as well as a host of new racing styles. Undercover’s key theme is ‘the thrill of the chase’ – so, in addition to outrunning the 5-0 across the free-roaming cities, you'll also be performing delivery jobs (getting stolen cars to destinations), taking part in Highway distance battles (escaping a certain distance from your rival), combined with more traditional point-to-point races. EA also briefly touched on the prospect of Boss Races, which is a feature we should be well familiar with from Most Wanted and ProStreet.

The nature of car theft also means you'll get a taste of the wide range of vehicles on offer (such as Porsches, Lamborghinis, Fords, Hondas and more – all to be confirmed, of course) in addition to your free-roaming ride. But no, we didn't see any sign of a Ferrari. So, what does Undercover feel like when you actually take to the streets? Well, even taking into account the huge amount of finalization left to do, the heaviness and understeer found with the handling in ProStreet has been replaced with the arcade/simulator balance of previous games. Cars feature localized damage depending where you hit the car (improving on the damage engine used in ProStreet), but it doesn't affect the handling of the car.

We also saw a return of the ‘heat meter’ (which tells you how pissed the cops are at you), cinematic slow-mo jumps as well as a revival of the ability to temporarily slow time for evasive maneuvers. We’ve only just scratched the surface with Need for Speed: Undercover and still have so much more to find out; what the online modes alone have in store for us demand that we keep an eye on it. Even so, we confidently predict that anyone who thought that Most Wanted was their favorite Need for Speed game will have plenty to like with Undercover, not least its new Hollywood style and narrative-driven approach. Prepare to get yourself revved up for the end of the year when Undercover will reveal itself.

Read on for an interview with the game's executive producer.

Looks good, people will slag it off just because it's EA, but i don't care, most wanted was excellent and this will be too.

As a matter of fact, Most Wanted is my favourite NFS game. I even bought the bargain bin 360 port so I could have it in semi-decent kinda-HD glory. I've been wanting a true "this-gen" NFS game since then, and ProStreet certainly didn't count.

Hopefully this will be like undergroud two but with police. undergroud two was better than most wanted in most aspects, but the two together would eb perfect.

I thought Carbon was better than Most Wanted, especially with the extreme customizations, the many online modes, and all the concept cars they had available. Not to mention the downloadables. I liked the Most Wanted chick better though. Looking forward to this game, no doubt. I have always been a NFS fan, wasn't a prostreet fan so much.

As a fellow need for speed lover. i thought pro street was the worst nfs game ever made. But after reading the review to undercover, this will be the best nfs game yet to come.

I own the old nfs hot pruisuit 2 and started buying all nfs after that, i was trully disapointed with pro street ( yes good graphics, but way off what nfs is known for : cops chasing you down, heliocopters following you, roadblocks and so on) i almost decided to quit with nfs afetr pro street but after hearing all the hype and reviews i give them one more chance

this games prolly gonna kick ass. maggie Q is pretty damn hot. I would like to see some in car driving perspective, not enough games have that. gives it more of a realistic feel, even tho its supposed to be a little over the top. the screens look badass tho. hopefully BMW signed on for the ride, and not just with the played out M3. love to see an M5 and M6 make it to one of these games. Im also disappointed with the absence of ferrari. Im a lambo fan, but you gotta have ferrari too. they got some badass cars that look pimp when u customize em. well see tho.

ok, spoke too soon. the screenshots show an M6. that alone will make me buy this game. maybe ill get my wish and theyll include a countach too, but i better not push my luck
