Dead Space and Mirror's Edge were poised as massive, blockbuster new franchises for Electronic Arts last year, but while both were mostly critical successes (though Mirror's Edge nicely divided people), neither were the multi-million sellers they'd been pegged as. During the Pacific Crest 11th Annual Technology Leadership Forum, EA CFO Eric Brown was asked a tough question -- are Saboteur and Dragon Age: Origins this year's Dead Space and Mirror's Edge?

"Looking at the two franchises, we have more modest expectations for Saboteur," explained Brown. "It's a version one of that IP, kind of an open world set in circa early 1940s Paris. We've kind of set our expectations accordingly for that title, so that's probably one difference versus where we were, say, 12 months ago."
While we may have to wait to get some proper level editing going on, and hopefully it'll be as easy to use as the editor included with Far Cry 2, those who own both Unreal Tournament III and Mirror's Edge on the PC can get a little level building going on right now as users have found a way to get UnrealEd working with Mirror's Edge."
Back in December, EA released a de-authorization tool for Spore which allowed users to switch these five authorizations around between machines. Now they've unveiled a new tool that allows you to do this for over a dozen different games with SecuROM.

Gamezine: Releasing a new intellectual property comes with a significant amount of risk management. After Mirror's Edge didn't get the reception DICE might have hoped for, the developer and their publisher EA discuss whether it's worth taking the risk again.

Lars Gustavsson, DICE's creative director, spoke of balancing execution and innovation at the 2009 DICE summit.

Perfectly executing previous concepts can result in excellent games and excellent sales; just look at the Call of Duty series. But there also needs to be innovation for the games industry to stay fresh.

DICE's latest video game, Mirror's Edge, took a huge risk by introducing the platforming genre to the first-person view in addition to presenting a fresh art direction. Gustavsson personally thinks that the game's innovation won out over risk management, but he does admit that in this economic climate the developer's priorities might need to change.
Big Download has learned via a spokesperson for the game's publisher Electronic Arts that the Time Trial level pack, originally scheduled to be released on Thursday, has been delayed.

According to the statement from the EA spokesperson we contacted, "To offer a completely smooth experience for players, DICE announced today that the DLC map pack for Mirror's Edge on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC will be delayed until February. However, the free exclusive map for PlayStation 3 players will be available to download on January 29 as previously announced. " PC owners of the game will still spend $10 to get the level pack when it is finally released.

Mirror's Edge revolutionised the platforming genre by introducing it to the first-person view - a view that had traditionally been relegated to shooters. But how would the game have looked if it was played in the traditional third-person view? Now you can find out.
You hop over fences, slide under pipes, run along walls, rebound off buildings and vault from ledges – all of it ideally without breaking stride and all of it from a first-person perspective. ...

Electronic Arts Blew this Console Cycle? (News)

Electronic Arts is the focus of attention for both analysts and gamers as 2008 is closing. The publisher, which is already facing stiff competition from Activision Blizzard and Ubisoft, has seen worse than expected results in the last month, deciding to lay off more than 1,000 people, about 10% of its workforce, while also closing down or consolidating a lot of studios, including Need for Speed: Undercover developer Black Box. New intellectual properties like Dead Space, a space based horror shooter, and Mirror's Edge, the free running DICE developed title, have failed to make the impact that the company had hoped for.

Some analysts believe that the recent news shows how the publisher missed the start of this console cycle and needs to rethink its strategy in order to create successful titles.

Couldn't get enough of Mirror's Edge for the 360 and PS3? Little Effie still has our heart-strings all tied up (maybe that explains why she was always on the run) and Electronic Arts knows it. Borne Games has collaborated with EA DICE and released a one-level beta of Mirror's Edge 2D.
It's pretty much what you'd imagine: You control Faith from a 2D side-scrolling perspective, using the arrow keys to perform wall-walks and slides with the S key used for jumping. Despite the short length, the character animation and details are top-notch, and the controls are easy to get a grip on after some practice. That's one definite improvement over the console version.
Mirror's Edge 2D is still in it's infant stages but it's easily comparable to the addictive Portal flash game. We look forward to more details…and of course, more time with Faith. After playing the beta, feel free to leave your feedback at Borne Games' site.

Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb posted the rankings to his blog on Sunday, showing that the Mirror's Edge demo was the 12th most popular game for Xbox Live members. Its full-game counterpart was nowhere to be seen on the top 20 list."

EA has signed on with Valve's highly popular digital distribution program Steam to distribute their games including recent releases, and with some added good news. Titles such as Spore and Mass Effect that have come under heavy fire for DRM usage, will no longer have any SecuROM protection. All games will use Steam's DRM.

2008 was a departure for Electronic Arts. The mega publisher best associated with their annual sports games and dependence on licensed products and established franchises instead released a number of original, brand new titles this year... and some of them didn't exactly light up the sales charts, Mirror's Edge in particular. Still, despite the lagging sales, EA CEO John Riccitiello has stated they plan to continue the franchise, and many other new properties, going forward.

"We're very pleased with a lot of our new franchises this year," Riccitiello said during an investors conference call yesterday (via MTV Multiplayer). "We think Spore has established a strong base for being an ongoing franchise. We think the same of MySims. Dead Space looks like a long-term big winner for us. We expect Warhammer will continue to perform very, very well, it's life measured in multiples of years, not multiples of months."
EA Still Has Faith in Mirror's Edge Franchise (News)

Retail checks have been coming in that indicate EA's stylish first-person action game Mirror's Edge has fallen short at retail.

But despite the game's commercial performance, EA CEO John Riccitiello assured that the company isn't canning the new series.

"Mirror's Edge is one that was very strongly reviewed, that one's going to go forward," said the exec during a conference call. "We're probably going to look into some issues around the design to make sure strong IP is married with strong business."

Reviews were generally favorable, earning a 78 percent average review score at Metacritic, but the new IP had to go up against a tough slate of more recognizable franchises.

EA has made a point to bring more new IP into its product portfolio, balancing out licensed and older series.

"We're actually very pleased with a lot of our new franchises this year," said Riccitiello. He added that Spore and MySims have established strong foundations for future installments, and expects Warhammer Online to do well as time goes on.

Riccitiello also categorized the new sci-fi survival horror game Dead Space as a "long-term big winner" for the company.

But if EA knew the economic conditions it was due to face this holiday, perhaps the publisher wouldn't have relied so heavily on new IP.
Mirror's Edge PC Version In January (News)

First-person platformer Mirror's Edge hits Xbox 360 and PS3 today. The PC was supposed to hit sometime "later this winter." How much later? After the holiday season.

When Eurogamer contacted EA today (or was it yesterday? stupid time difference), they were told that no release date was set for the PC version of the game yet. To reiterate the point from yesterday's article about the GTA IV DLC's release date, if publishers still aren't sure about a release date this late in 2008, you can be pretty sure it's not going to come out this year.

Sure enough, EA just sent out a press release today revealing that the PC version will be released in January 2009. Could even be early January - right now Amazon lists January 6th as the date.

There is still no public release date for the PC version of Mirror's Edge, Electronic Arts told Eurogamer this afternoon.

In other words, we can't say for definite whether the game will be out before Christmas, but online retailers GAME and Play reckon it won't be. Both carry listings for early January.

Mirror's Edge is an ambitious and vibrantly-coloured first-person free-running game from Battlefield developer DICE, and was recently voted as the top game of the Eurogamer Expo by flocks of attendees.

Big Download: "It was one of our most anticipated PC games for the fall but now there are some signs that Mirror's Edge might not make it to PC hard drives this year after all. The unusual first person action game from developer Digital Illusions and publisher Electronic Arts has generated tons of advance buzz and at the moment it looks like the console versions are still due for release this fall."
Crowds were rarely seen and game journalists were, at times, able to form the semblance of a smile by the end of the show...thanks in no small part to some very enjoyable games and a distinct drop in the body odor factor. Anyway, here are UGO's picks for the best of the best of E3 2008.

Kotaku:

"What first struck me about the game was just how pretty it is. Mirror's Edge using the Unreal Engine but it does so to create something so unfamiliar, a first-person perspective in a bright, crisp world. Matching the simple aesthetic, the games controls are very straight forward. Granted I only had a chance to run and interact with the environment, so I'm not sure how combat will hold up."

KOTAKU:

"Mirror's Edge looks great. And the first-person-running-jumping-sliding-kicking-shooting gameplay is certainly novel and different. This morning, I checked out the E3 build, which looked, well, great. But...while watching the dev show off the game, I seriously started to feel ill. Really, really ill. I've never gotten motion sick from a game, and I got it pretty bad while checking out Mirror's Edge. Like to the point of breaking out in a cold sweat and feeling rather green. Actually playing the game didn't make me as sick as watching - and playing it was fun. The controls are intuitive and tight, and the overall design is polished.

I was talking with McWhertor why the game made me motion sick. He pointed out that the game does leave out certain colors in the color platte and that maybe, just maybe that's the reason. That, or the jet lag or the lack of sleep."

The demonstration was identical to that shown at the Game Developers Conference, with one minor difference. This time around, the PlayStation 3 version was demoed, instead of the Xbox 360 version.

Reaction time, which slows down the game a la bullet time, was used to make an extremely long jump. An EA DICE representative also noted that reaction time can be used to perform more advanced combat moves."
