When videogames go emo

We now have to be miserable to have fun

Bomberman: Act Zero

It was a tough day at Hudson’s offices. The Bomberman franchise had been delighting gamers for twenty-one years with its perfectly judged gameplay, endearing character design, and bright ‘n’ breezy sense of fun. It had a timeless game concept, perfect from its inception and eagerly lapped up by old and young gamers alike with every new iteration. But something just felt wrong. It always had. After hours of thought on the subject of their game’s indefinable failing, one plucky, highly-paid executive struck gold.

What Bomberman had always been missing was some dark, gritty and deeply unpleasant production design. How could they have been so wrong all these years? Their franchise was a joke! It’s well known that nothing can be worthwhile without the inherent coolness that can only come from looking grimy and miserable. Just ask any teenager. They know everything.
