ELECTRONIC ARTS HAS backed down from its plan to ship uber-draconian DRM software on two of its top PC releases for the year, Mass Effect and Spore.
TISCALI Games informed that Alone in the Dark (PC version) will be next game using mandatory online authorization, similar to one from Mass Effect.
After revealing yesterday that Mass Effect PC would employ an online activation system that requires users to re-authenticate their game every ten days, BioWare and EA have decided to back down and listen to those who actually purchase their games. In other words, the community.
GP writes: "Hotly-anticipated PC titles Spore and Mass Effect will be among the first wave of PC games from EA to employ a controversial form of copy protection."
According to Derek French, Mass Effect, scheduled to arrive on the PC this 28th, will employ the same SecuROM online activation system that was initially put into Bioshock, allowing the buyer to activate his copy of Mass Effect for 3 times before politely asking to him / her to go to hell, that is, contact the customer service "helpline" to get it reactivated. And while the game itself wouldn't require the DVD to be physically present in the drive, it goes one step further and phones home every 10 days and re-authenticates just to make sure legit customers are not the worst form of criminal scum publishers swear we are.
EA confirmed its commitment to PC gaming in the publisher's annual European showcase.
From the article: "Looks like EA has announced a $10 discount program for those that pre-order their upcoming Mass Effect game for the PC. This deal is only available at participating stores and those confirmed so far are: Gamestop, Amazon.com, and GoGamer. More interesting is that if Mass Effect is pre-ordered from the EA Online Store, they will receive bonus items from the upcoming sci-fi survival-horror title Dead Space..."

"We just want to make sure we're satisfying what the fans want first, so often it's good to get their feedback and say, 'What kinds of things would really be exciting to you?', and how can we put those in the game."
