With games like Rift, World of Warcraft, and The Old Republic dominating the MMORPG news, it's sometimes easy to forget that Turbine is having great success with their pay-to-play turned free-to-play games. Its biggest success story was likely Lord of the Rings: Online, which switched over more than a year ago and has seen boosts in subscribers and paying customers as free players flood Middle Earth, eager to immerse themselves in Tolkien's world. This surge has given the game a new life, and Turbine has rewarded their (enlarged) audience by continuing to pump out consistent content, with the next update, Prince of Rohan, scheduled for release next week...


US performance artist Jordan Wayne Long will soon attempt to answer one of mankind's most enduring questions; namely, what would happen to a dude who spends seven days sealed in a crate on the back of a truck playing nothing but Lord of the Rings Online.

The 'Box Shipment #2' project will begin on July 1st, and see Long transported for seven days from Bald Knob, Arkansas to Portland, Oregon, where he will emerge (red eyed and babbling incoherently, we suspect) to tell his tale at the Fourteen30Contemporary Art Gallery. According to Long, the performance art piece is one of a continuing series of human experiments designed to test the healing effects of MMOs...


The decision to ditch subscription fees for Lord of the Rings Online is proving to be a lucrative move for MMO developer Turbine, as the company has announced that its revenues have nearly tripled since making the free-to-play transition last Fall. Back in October, the micro-transaction strategy had already doubled the game's revenues...

GamerZines: Turbine are set to celebrate The Lord of the Rings Online's three-year anniversary with a special event, set to begin on April 26th. The celebrations will run from Monday until June 30th, so there's plenty of time for players to jump into Middle-Earth for the first time or return after a spell away.
