Expectations
are high when it comes to Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, especially when you’re
boasting an impressive team that includes Ken Rolston the lead designer of The
Elder Scrolls III and IV, Todd McFarlane the creator of Spawn, and best-selling
author fantasy author R.A. Salvatore. We’ve had multiple opportunities to look
at this game in the past year but now that the release day is approaching, we
were able to sit down and play through several quests, including some parts of
the main storyline and finally confront the hulking Balor that we’ve only seen
in screenshots.

The Elder Scrolls: Whatchamacallit? Lord of the Huhs? World of
Whatcraft? Sorry, right now we're focusing on open-world fantasy game:
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. Associate Producer Craig Krstolic walked
us through one of the game's dungeons and showed us exactly why we
should be excited by Big Huge Games' upcoming action RPG. We get to see
him lay waste to large groups of enemies with his powerful hero and
explain the background for the game's interesting lore. Plus, the main
character is called "The Fateless One", and that's sort of incredibly
awesome. Like, seriously, how didn't anyone think of that before?...

This will be the second time this E3 we’ve written about Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, but you can’t blame us for being interested. Once you get over the generic title, this may be the first game ever to truly blend God of War-style combat with an Oblivion-esque open world. And that sounds amazing to us.

The word “epic” is thrown around quite a bit when describing RPGs, and open world fantasy adventure Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is no different. From the big-name creators involved (more on them later) to the class and character customization to the stories and quest system, Reckoning’s intentions are vast and ambitious. Luckily, from what we've seen so far, Reckoning may have the stones to turn those big plans into reality...
