Just Cause 2

We recently got another chance to test out how well Tarzan (er, Rico) the secret agent swings in the run up to his launch into the public sphere in late March. And it turns out that he’s swinging rather well, as it happens.

Let’s do a quick recap for those who haven’t been here very long. Rico is a sort of Hispanic James Bond, but with an even more uncanny ability to dodge death and defeat evil.

The first order of business in Just Cause 2 isn’t to steal a car, or motorcycle, or ATV, or fighter jet, or attack chopper. It isn’t to go exploring the miles and miles of jungles, mountains, and cities. No, first you must wrap your head around the grappling hook and parachute.

It would be easy to dismiss Just Cause 2 as a “typical sandbox game, but on a tropical island,” but it would be overlooking a crucial difference: freedom. Now, that also sounds like a synonym for “sandbox” but most sandbox games revolve around a huge world that you can explore, and then do stuff when you get to places.

It’s official: tropical islands are the latest must-have environmental accessory this season for over-the-shoulder, free-roaming third-person carnage. Just Cause 2 is the sequel to the enjoyable first GTA-inspired game, that saw Latino action hero Rico Rodriguez causing mayhem on a South American island, and is part of a trend that is seeing the tropical paradise setting in everything from the seminal Far Cry, through Crysis, Dead Island
