Ghostbusters - hands-on

Played and explained through 18 film quotes

6. "If the ionization-rate is constant for all ectoplasmic entities, we can really bust some heads... in a spiritual sense, of course."

After we investigated the ghost droppings enough, it was time to pull out the sticks, as they say, and get to blasting. As the ghost possessed a pile of books, it built itself into a giant, man shaped book creature. We proceeded to blast the crap out of it until we saw a weak point. Then came a charge shot to that area and blammo, a bunch of empty books fall to the ground as the ghost scurries away.

7. "We came, we saw, we kicked its ass!"

How the combat plays has been covered before, but as a quick reminder, it's a bit like Gears of War... what with camera placement, the shooting mechanics of the proton packs, and even how your character can almost die, but be brought back to life with the assistance of a friend. Fortunately, the 'Busters are still their old nerdy selves, not the roided behemoths of Gears.

8. "Whoa, whoa, whoa! Nice shootin', Tex!"

What made the proton packs so fun was that all around the library were things to destroy. Tables, lamps, lights, books, chairs; all explode as you blast the area with your beams, as if you turned on a fire hose filled with lasers. And the team doesn't have to pay for damages this time, as they are now employed by the city.

9. "Why worry? Each one of us is carrying an unlicensed nuclear accelerator on his back."

Not only does your equipment cause mayhem and destruction, but all that junk on your back serves another purpose. Much important info, such as spectre proximity, your pack over heating, and more is shown on the equipment hanging off of you. The lack of health bars and the like really cleans up the screen to give the game a more cinematic feel.

10. "Symmetrical book stacking. Just like the Philadelphia mass turbulence of 1947."

Being in the library also let the developers show off the title's physics engine. Every book on the shelves was a separate item, not just when floating around possessed, but everywhere else. As bookshelves bounced around, books fell out of them very naturally.

11. "Venkman, shorten your stream! I don't want my face burned off!"

Though you apparently can't kill your fellow paranormal investigators with your positron collider, you can blast then into unconsciousness. Be careful not to do that, because they won't be helping you any time soon. No word yet on how crossing beams will work out. It's probably bad.

12. "I collect spores, molds and fungus."

What would a modern game be without collectibles? We don't know, but Ghostbusters has them anyway. Though visible only when wearing the goggles, several items were hidden throughout the level. Perhaps they are hooked into Achievements/Trophies.
