The success surrounding the popular Xbox 360/PC shooter Gears of War has led to the creation of a comic book based on the game's universe. It's officially been confirmed that DC Comics partnered with Epic Games to publish a Gears of War comic book series, which is "slated to debut from DC's WildStorm publishing imprint in October." More details will be uncovered soon.

As for the second installment in the shooter series -- a.k.a. Gears of War 2 -- Epic revealed that they won't be releasing a demo before the full game hits stores.

"[There are] no plans for a demo," associate producer Tanya Jessen told Shacknews. "The reason being that it's been such a fast turnaround. A two year production cycle, for a game of this caliber, is really short."

In relation to game-inspired comics, the well-known publisher DC Comics also recently revealed that its going to making a comic book series based on the upcoming game Prototype.

Several months ago FiringSquad reported that comic book publisher Boom Studios announced plans to release a monthly comic book based on Epic Games's Xbox 360 action game Gears of War. Boom Comics solicited a #0 issue of the comic in Previews magazine for release back in October 2007 but that comic never got released.

At WonderCon on Friday FiringSquad asked reps for Boom Comics what happened and FiringSquad got confirmation from them that their plans for an official Gears of War comic have now been cancelled. The company reps were vague on what exactly happened, saying, "We will let Epic do what they do best and we will do what we do best."

Microsoft has snapped up Kudo Tsunoda from the ashes of EA Chicago, the studio responsible for Fight Night Round 3 and Def Jam Icon that EA shut down in November last year.

The colourful and charismatic Kudo Tsunoda was the lead producer on both of those games and was working on the sequel to Marvel: Rise Of The Imperfects when EA closed the studio down. Following the closure, which EA promised wasn't because Def Jam Icon brought Sean Paul to the 360, Tsunoda has now joined Microsoft's Xbox division as the title of General Manager.

The confusing part is Kudo Tsunoda is project lead on "an upcoming Gears Of War title", which throws itself open to all sorts of interpretations - where does this leave Cliffy B and Epic? Will Tsunoda just have an advisory role? Does this mean another Gears Of War title besides the expected sequel? Will Sean Paul be in it? So many questions, so few answers. Hopefully, the upcoming Games Developer Conference will give the answers...

Set to debut in late spring, the first wave of the series will feature three figures: Marcus Fenix, Augustus Cole, and a Locust drone. NECA has not fully detailed future plans for the Gears of War line of figures, but did say this was only the first collection in an ongoing series.
The first details have been spotted on the official Gears of War prequel, which is unfortunately (for Gears fans, who are surely not big readers) in book form.

Gears of War: The Pendulum Wars - The Battle of Aspho Fields (we were hoping for a longer title) is being penned by former games journo Steven Kent of Next Generation and USA Today fame.

According to the official blurb, The Battle Aspho Fields "builds upon the characters' backstories and gives eager fans their first ...
18th Dec, 2007

There are some things that developers and publishers just don't want you to know. And given the unnaturally high number of game announcements, hardware revelations, industry shake-ups, and all round cool things going on this year, they've wanted you to not know a lot during 2007. Thankfully though, the internet exists, and thus nothing is sacred.

That's the eternal irony of the games industry. It's a business which tries to shroud itself in secrecy, but whose patrons congregate ...

Asked if Epic is categorically never going to release them as downloads for Xbox 360 users, Rein said, "It looks that way."

You're probably anxious to play Gears of War PC, but Gamescore Blog wanted to let you know of a small problem (fortunately, with an easy fix). When you first play Gears of War for Windows, an automatic update to Games for Windows -- LIVE will be downloaded. But after the update is downloaded, you're put back to the main menu of the game. If you don't shut down the game, the update won't complete. There's two ways to get over this bump. The easiest is to simply shut down the game after the update is downloaded (you'll know it's safe because you'll be back at the main menu, and not on the "Don't shut down your PC while the update is being downloaded" screen). As soon as you close the game, the update will install automatically and you're good to go. The second option is to manually install the latest Games for Windows -- LIVE update.
If you have a GeForce 8800 GTX/Ultra level video card you can enjoy that setting. But on the GeForce 8800 GT/GTS and Radeon HD 2900 XT you will have to sacrifice other in-game options or resolutions in order to use 4X AA. It is rather a shame because we noticed that 4X AA does improve the visual quality of this game in a noticeable way."
So, Gears of War in one word: meaty. Even the sneering lips of the heroes manage to be muscular, and the dialogue stinks of five-day sweat. The weaponry is tactile, and the sound effects are like someone slapping strips of ...
Last Friday, the cream of the games industry gathered in London town for the Golden Joysticks awards, the only videogame awards voted for by you, the gamers on the ground. And, thanks to real gamers like yourselves, Gears of War walked away with the Ultimate Game of the Year 2007 accolade, beating off competition from Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Wii Sports and Final Fantasy XII. Well done, Epic.

Outside of Mark's office, staff members play on the Epic basketball court, others help themselves to a ...
We're playing the Gears of War PC's new King of the Hill mode, which has just seen four other players kill each other viciously from behind one after another in a hilarious cartoon chain of death. Gears of War has shifted over four million copies on Xbox 360 alone, won countless Game of the Year awards and become one of the most popular online shooters of ...

Microsoft Game Studios announced today that the eagerly-awaited "Gears of War" for Windows has gone gold and will hit retailers throughout North America on November 6th.

In addition to retaining all of the content from its Xbox 360 counterpart and all previously released downloadable content (seven multiplayer maps and the Annex game mode), "Gears of War" for Windows will feature exciting original content, all-new Achievements to unlock, and ultra-high resolution visuals. Five new campaign chapters expand upon the riveting story (including an epic battle with the fearsome Brumak), and the action-packed multiplayer offering is bolstered with three exclusive multiplayer maps, a "King of the Hill" game type, and Games for Windows ¿ LIVE support to deliver online matchmaking for Gold members. A new game editor will allow users to develop an unlimited number of user-created levels with complete access to the Unreal Editor.

The game features 50 achievements totaling 1000 points. Most of the achievements are the same as the 360 counter-part, with the clever addition of the "Not So Serious" achievement that calls for 10,000 kills in Player matches, rather than Ranked matches. The "Seriously..." achievement for killing 10,000 in Ranked matches is still present, forcing players to now have 20,000 kills total, unless the achievements stack together if you get them in Ranked matches first.

There is also one secret achievement, which is most likely for killing the new boss character (the Brumak), presumably on Hardcore (or higher) difficulty like the other boss achievements.
Flanked by Gears of War director Cliff Bleszinski and Gears PC lead level designer Jim Brown, Fergusson explained that bringing the game to the PC was a natural move--especially considering it had actually been running on the PC during the project's early showings at E3.

Bleszinski echoed that sentiment, adding that the port had been under development since just after the original Xbox 360 version shipped.
The Hollywood scriptwriter given the responsibility of penning the silver screen adaptation of Epic's Gears of War has said that movie will be an "enormous film."

Speaking to GamePro.com, Stuart Beattie, whose writing credits include Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, explained that it's likely the Gears movie will be shot entirely on green screen like 300.

"There's no way to build that world any other way, really," he said. "That's a huge world. It's a ...

GDC China kicked off in Shanghai with a keynote from Epic China CEO Paul Meegan discussing 'The Possibilities and Perils of Production Outsourcing, And How It's Changing the Way Games Are Made', and Gamasutra was there to report his conclusions.

Meegan, who formerly ran Ubisoft Shanghai, recently set up the relatively low-profile Epic China, previously revealed at Tokyo Game Show 2006, and his speech at the inaugural GDC China conference, co-run by [Gamasutra owner] CMP and IDG, covered the bases, from why to outsource to some of the pitfalls of doing so.

Epic China has been set up to provide outsourcing help both to Gears Of War creator Epic and to associated companies using Unreal Engine 3, and already has a large China-based staff working on asset creation for games - thus Meegan's keenly awaited speech.

Mark Rein has responded to the recent rumors about UE3 on PS3 problems and UT3 running 60fps at GC in a forum post in which he states that, "Epic heard that same kind of silliness about UE3 on Xbox 360 before we shipped Gears of War and we all know how that turned out."

He continues to say that :

"The only way to silence the uninformed critics is to ship the games and let them play them for themselves. We're continually optimizing our engine on all supported platforms and we will continue to do so for several years into this generation. What we ship on PC and PS3 this fall will be considerably better than the builds we're showing here at Games Convention in every aspect."

The semi-official Gamerscore Blog run by Microsoft employees confirmed in the article "The Sixth Tech Myth" that Live Service will be available on Windows XP.

"When Cliffy B demoed Gears of War for Windows at E3 2007 to a throng of enthralled attendees, he let drop at the end of his presentation that Gears would be available for both Windows XP and Windows Vista this year."

"You should all breathe a sigh of relief and know that Games for Windows -- LIVE will work on Windows XP."

"... the team has been able to go back and finalize the work done to make sure Games for Windows -- LIVE works on Windows XP. Which means that not only Gears of War will connect to LIVE on Windows XP, but so will the other games we announced that will support Games for Windows -- LIVE, like Universe at War from SEGA (which, incidentally, will also enable cross-platform play between Xbox 360 and Windows PCs)."
But that doesn't mean it won't appear in GOW 2. Flashback anyone?...

There must be something very special about Gears of War on the PC, because it is apparently going to cost gamers ten dollars MORE than other non-limited edition PC games.

Gears is listed on Gamestop/EBGames website with a pre-release date of 11/1/07 and the price tag of 59.99$ - the price point normally reserved for special and collector's edition games.
A lot's happened in the world of PC gaming already this year. Most notable was the introduction of Microsoft's Games for Windows - Live initiative, but there have already been several high profile releases on the platform.

So much so that when we went back to our 2007 PC Game feature we almost had to halve it, as many games were already on sale. But that's okay because there are plenty more waiting for their chance to conquer the charts. Here's what you should be spending your money on in the ...

After all, a massive game like Gears of War is surely just the thing to encourage PC gamers to try this feature that Microsoft's introduced in Games for Windows - Live, isn't it?
Epic's Mark Rein has said it's "very unlikely" that the content the developer is creating exclusively for Gears of War on PC will ever be released for the original Xbox 360 version of the game.

"It's very unlikely because the two code bases aren't compatible," Rein explained when we caught up with him earlier this week.

"To do that, we would have to patch the 360 version and the size of the patch would probably dwarf all five updates we've done so far. It's just too much work. I can't see it ...
The question on the minds of every Xbox 360 owner is whether or not these additions will make their way to Microsoft's console.

Yesterday's openly salvo of GameTrailers.com's "E3 Business & Media Summit Awards" offered up nominations and winners across various categories, such as Best Racer, Best Action Adventure, Best PSP Game, and Best DS Game. And, to be honest, the winners and loses didn't really throw up many surprises.

However, today's second round of E3 Awards coverage may well stoke the fires of fervent fanboy fanaticism. And why?

Oh, because the Best First-Person Shooter category does not include nominations for Halo 3 and Killzone 2, because Sony comes under fire on various fronts in terms of Most Disappointing, and neither Mass Effect nor Assassin's Creed is given a nomination nod for Best Graphics ¿ while a revamped PC port of Gears of War certainly is.
It's been about 8 months since Gears of War's orgiastic celebration of blood, guts, and in-your-face visceral gameplay upped the ante for shooters when it debuted on the Xbox 360. This week, game designer Cliff Bleszinski finally acknowledged what gamers have been expecting for quite some time, that Gears of War would be blasting its way to the PC.

This holiday season, both XP and Vista users can look forward to five new chapters added to the story mode, a new multiplayer mode, and 3 new maps. ...
Cliff "Gears of War" Bleszinski has been blasted into the videogame stardom spotlight after the huge success of his flagship 360 shooter and now has his sights set on the future (surely working on Gears 2).

We recently managed to snatch a few moments with gaming's best-groomed designer at the Game Developers Conference, where he nabbed three awards including best game for Gears and took to the podium to tell a gushing audience just how he thought up the UE3 chainsaw madness.

"I have a 40 ft. hard-on for original IP and that's what Gears of War is," Epic's Cliff Bleszinski told us last week, when we quizzed him on the chances of seeing more original properties from the Unreal and Gears studio.
