The future of Microsoft's long running Flight Simulator series has been cast into doubt, after the software maker US laid-off the entire development team.

Microsoft says it is "committed" to the series, despite shutting the Aces studio when it cut 5000 jobs.

But third party developers say Microsoft needs to outline its plans for the game in more detail.

MS Flight Simulator is arguably the longest running computer game series ever, first launched back in 1982.

Fudzilla writes, "The news that Microsoft dissolved the ACES Studio responsible for Microsoft's Flight Simulator product really caught everyone by surprise; but even though we know at least from Microsoft the title is as dead as dead can be, Mamba Games has announced that they have secured the global rights to six Microsoft Flight Simulator X add-on packs that will be released over a two-year period.

Mamba Games is a start-up company that is being headed by former THQ executive, Robert Nielson, and the company made the announcement about securing the rights to the six add-on packs for Flight Simulator X. The first add-on that will be released is the Grumman F6F Hellcat, which was developed by ReadFlight and is scheduled for release on March 27th."
The carb temps were starting to push 50°C, so I toggled the intercooler flaps open a few notches with my mouse and patiently watched the numbers drop back into the green, wondering why that tool in the backseat couldn’t do it ...

The latest chapter in Microsoft's long-running Flight Simulator series will knock your windsocks off. Flight Simulator X is the prettiest and most ambitious edition in the franchise's 25-year history and it'll transport you to a stunning new world of photorealistic scenery and marvelously detailed aircraft… if you have a liquid nitrogen-cooled Cray supercomputer tucked in your tower.

Microsoft's Flight Simulator is one of the most enduring franchises of all time, and one that completely dominates the simulator genre. So, what could Microsoft do to make their sandbox in the sky even more appealing? Plenty, it seems.

"Next-gen" is a term we usually reserve for the world of consoles, but Flight Simulator X is the first shot in a salvo of rule-changing games that are beginning to emerge on the PC. This internet-connected simulator offers up real-time weather, 24,000 real-world ...
