If Far Cry were a movie, you’d never go see it. You are Jack Carver, former Special Forces commando and all-around generic badass in a Hawaiian shirt, involuntarily recruited by a fine-lookin’ woman to stop a mad scientist conducting genetic experiments on an isolated island chain. Um, yeah. Luckily, Far Cry is not a flick - it’s actually one of the best PC shooters you’ve probably never played.
Far Cry really shines in its enormous outdoor environments. Levels look like something you’d see on a postcard sent back from a tropical vacation, and you’re totally free to roam each island you visit. Your mole inside the mad scientist’s organization gives you objectives on your compass, so it’s up to you how to get there. The feeling of freedom makes a welcome change from the tightly defined path most games force you to follow. You can drive jeeps, trucks, boats and even fly a hang glider to get to hard-to-reach areas (not to mention use them to scatter enemies like bowling pins). You’ll also wield the usual array of pistols, shotguns, machine guns, rocket launchers and sniper rifles - everything a growing boy needs.
Through the first half of the game, you’ll fight against an army of mercenaries with an absolutely vicious AI that will ambush, outflank and overwhelm you if you let your guard down. The second half involves fighting mutated monkeys and soldiers (which are considerably dumber but much stronger than the mercenaries) in more conventional, indoor levels - not quite as fun, but good for gameplay variety. Speaking of, you don’t have to shoot your way through; you can sneak past most enemies, which wins the game some major replayablity points.
